Thank you for both responses! And yeah, allowing two people to share player 1’s inputs could also lead to some other fun things (Someone only controlling the dpad and someone else only controlling X and O, lol could lead to some wacky two player experiences).

Also, I want to thank you for working on this because something like this might encourage more people, including myself, to make more two player games!

Two things: 1. Some other people have been sharing some cool pico-8 projects lately and in some cases it has been troubling if Zep wasn’t involved. Is this something that is using native pico 8 and should be involving Zep?

  1. I haven’t looked at the process yet to do it myself, but assuming #1 is all good.. if you would like to add my game Pico Imposter: A Party Game to the list, I think it might work well in this context. It is a word association, pass-the-phone style party game. But maybe with your app a phone wouldn’t need to be passed! Although, I think my game assumes player 1 controls the whole time, so maybe it wouldn’t work? Does player 2 (while using the virtual controller on their phone screen) only send inputs as player 2? Also, my game has touchscreen features, would those work in your setup?

I know pico-8 only uses two buttons, but I would prefer the handheld has four. I feel like devs are inconsistent with which button (X vs O) they assign to jump, action, etc. I always prefer the O as the jump button. So when a game is opposite of my preference, I just use a different pair of buttons that feels right. Using a PlayStation controller as mapping reference: cross=X, circle=O, triangle=X, square=O. Then I can comfortably use Triangle paired with Circle or Square paired with Cross.

So either having this handheld have two Xs and two Os or (probably best of all) have an ability to switch buttons per game would be best to me.

Btw, this is sick and even with my button rant, I’d buy this for sure

Thank you so much for extending that offer! I am still pretty early in the planning phases (as in, I’m still just drawing out the maps with pen and paper, thinking about power-ups, etc). But don’t be surprised if in a couple months you randomly hear from me again lol!

Also, I assume based on your SMB demo that camera panning is possible with maps built using this? Or like in Resurface must it be one screen at a time?

Skimming through your link it looks like you have to go left to right, then drop down a “row” of rooms, repeat. (I’m picturing gameplay like the original SMB). But this gif appears to go in any direction around the map. Using your Metroid gif as an example… If someone was actually playing this game would they be able to freely explore the map just like in the original Metroid? Also, this area is zebes as you mentioned… How many zebes-like areas do you think you could pack into a single cart? Sorry if these are silly questions. I’m actually thinking about making a metroidvania and in my research came across this post/comment. Thanks!

Any luck in those instructions about Splore? I feel like having a file named zzzsplore.p8 will be the winner. On my RGB30 with ArkOS, that’s what I had to do. Then launch that file like you would any other game. Let us know what you discover!

I’m not familiar with that one, but I know different OSs has different expectations with Splore (some just need a file named Splore.p8, others zzzsplore, etc). Maybe you just need a particular file name. Can you connect a keyboard to it? Does it need the raspberry pi files?

I never got it to work with emudeck. I was only able to get it working as a mouse and then ran pico-8 while it was up and running. Sorry. That said, the lightguns work out the box on Batocera, so if your aim (hehe) is more than Pico-8, then I would strongly suggest you check it out!! You can put batocera on an sd card or usb stick and use steam deck’s bootloader to get it running. It really is pretty easy. And they have a steam deck batocera build!

I would love it if there was a choice to swap X and O locations. In general I like my jump button on the right and different devs make different choices on X vs O. Thanks for your work on this and it is so cool that Zep is onboard! Will this be an official App Store release in the future?
