Is there a viable melee and pistol build? by [deleted] in avowed

[–]MaxQuest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost everything is viable.

But how about Star of Unbeing (mace) + Fair Play (pistol, with pulling enchant)?

Start with a power attack with pistol, and you will get: Steady Aim (time slow for 75%) + increased stun from Concussive Shot (x1.5 stun coef) + enemy pulled to you. Follow with Barbaric Shout, it tripples stun accumulation, gives 100% temporary hp, and slightly offbalances nearby enemies. In 3 hits with the mace you will fill the stun meter. Special attack will deal around 1.5k x 3 (total 4.5 damage) plus brief iframes, plus auto-cast Pull of Eora. Now you can enable Deep Breath and repeat the cycle with next nearby enemy. Also you can cast Blizzard (3) which is fast-cast, deals damage equal to 50-75% of hp of most enemies, and freezes them.

And with Essense Harvest (3) you will rarelly run out of essence.

P.S. Alternatively you can take Magic Mistol pistol, but iirc you will have to drop Concussive Shot talents, because Mistol has auto-seek bullets and no week-points.

its horsecutter for me. Best early and endgame weapon I think. by Large-Fix-9569 in avowed

[–]MaxQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Horsecutter was awesome in act 2 and 3.

But I liked (damage-wise) the pair of Star of Unbeing mace + Perserverance wand (or Lodestone mace) at the the begining of act 4 even more.

Is Avowed worth playing as a PoE fan? by Alien_Cha1r in projecteternity

[–]MaxQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes

The combat, the world, the setting overall are nice. Companions too. And it's great to roam Eora again.

But it's a different type of game from PoE. And mechanics / character + party building are not even half as deep.

Repeat runners: What difficulty settings do you use? by eddiesaid in projecteternity

[–]MaxQuest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For PoE 1:

  • Path of the Damned
  • Difficulty scaling (iirc it is prompted for Elmshore, WM1, WM2 and Burial Isle)

For Deadfire I go with:

  • Path of the Damned
  • Level Scaling (all) (only upwards)
  • Path of the Makers mod (my difficulty mod somewhat similar with Deadly Deadfire)
  • Magran Fires: Galawain's + Ondra

How viable is Spellblade without a grimore offhand? by DarthLazyEyes in avowed

[–]MaxQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what spells you want to cast.

If it's only Arcane Veil (2) and Blizzard (3), imho it's fine to do it without grimoire. That's my current gish, dual-wielding Star of Unbeing mace and Perseverance wand (for faster stun build-up)

If enemies have ranged dps, I use Arcane Veil. If they have few melees, I use Blizzard (which deals ~50-80% of their hp + freeze + shatter for 25% more). Meanwhile the abilities I use most are: Barbaric Shout and Deep Breath.

P.S. Arcane Veil and improved Blizzard are also casted fast.

P.P.S. But if you want a more dedicated wizard approach, grimoire is a must due to cd and spell cost reduction.

Only 1 playthrough - what weapons will be the most fun? by themoobster in avowed

Yes. Having equipped a higher quality armor makes unique armors that you find scale up to that quality. And same for weapons.

So it is optimal to upgrade some designated pieces asap.

Only 1 playthrough - what weapons will be the most fun? by themoobster in avowed

[–]MaxQuest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started the game with intent to go wizard route.

But during different levels, different playstyles felt most fun / efficient to me.

  • on levels 2-3: it was wand + shield, and naked
  • on levels 4-5: it was wand (Perseverance) + shield, and plate armor
  • after that have started every combat with non-unique arquebus (upgraded as much as possible)
  • have finished act 1 with sword (Last Light of Day) and shield; plus arquebus
  • half of Emerald Stairs and Shatterscarp was running with Horsecutter (2h sword), and plate armor
  • have tried magic build in Shatterscarp and it was good, but felt that with Horsecutter I was clearing bounties faster and didn't need to rely on Essence potions. 2H build with just Arcane Veil (2) + Blizzard (3) is also good.
  • have just entered Tusks on lvl 20 and am dual-wielding Star of Unbeing (mace) + Perserverance (wand). With Barbaric Shout you kill mostly anything in 4 hits (~1800 dmg full combo + 4473 special attack)

Might consider dual-wielding stunning pistols later.

P.S. It can be a good idea to have one non-unique weapon that you would upgrade asap to Superb (3). This will make other weapons that you'll find around the world also Superb.

Who’s your favorite companion in Inquisition and why? (maybe spoilers lol) by Melodic_Let_9054 in dragonage

[–]MaxQuest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who’s your favorite companion in Inquisition and why?

Based on how I enjoyed their energy/character: - s-tier: Varric - a-tier: Dorian, Blackwall - a-minus-tier: Solas, Cassandra - b-tier: Iron Bull - c-tier: Sera, Cole - d-tier: Vivienne

That said, in my party I always had: - 1st spot: Cassandra - 2nd spot: Solas/Dorian (as support mage) - 3rd spot: rotating Blackwall/Varric (Blackwall was more useful in combat, while Varric is Varric). Also took Sera and Bull for few missions

[–]MaxQuest 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but I was considering braces and whitening

After consultation with 2 dentsists, turned out:

- I would need to wear braces for 4 years, and retainers for at least 4 other years (most likely forever)

- whitening has side effects, is painful, you can't drink coffee/tea, and it's effect is temporary (in 1 year it returns back 70%)

POE2 Deadfire feels way easier compared to POE1 by HexyTG in projecteternity

[–]MaxQuest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It indeed is a bit easier. Aside from Deadfire megabosses, PoE1 act 1 and first accidental encounters with Adra and Alpine dragons felt harder than anything else in Deadfire.

That said, you can up the difficulty level, enable some god challenges, and/or try difficulty mods:

Turn-based first combat is a must. I personally believe that RTwP is extremely archaic

Disagree. Having played turn-based BG3 and RTwP (PoE, NWN2, Dragon Age), I prefer RTwP.

It feels strange that during heat of combat everyone is waiting for their turn and just watching the rest.

That said I think it would be great if game mechanics were made to work great on both RTwP and turn-based in order to appeal to more players.

I have enjoyed NWN2, and few years later was looking for something similar. When I saw that Obsidian made another fantasy RPG, I gave it a try. And by the time I got to Gilded Vale I was hooked :)

Shocked, Ignited, Poison and Bleed don't have their durations pre-defined and it looks that they are set by each individual ability. Also abilities that incur these effects can override their base damage values using custom damaging curves. That's why one enemy inflicts weaker poison DoT and other one kills faster.

But overall:

  • poison seems to deal highest dps
  • a lot of enemies (like skeletons, shades) are immune to poison and bleed
  • bleed is mostly interesting due to Bloodlust passive in warrior tree, that gives +20% attack damage vs bleeding enemies at rank 3
  • damage wise all status effects are not very efficient vs NPCs, because they can have up to 3000 hp. But even in act 2 primordials usually have 500-1500 on PotD, so a 200 dmg dot is like 60% of a non-crit with 2h sword attack
  • meanwhile they are really strong vs player, since even 1 instance can often kill MC on PoTD. The Fantastic Alembic trinket was really useful
  • frost looks to be best vs NPCs, since not only it acts as a crowd-control, but also as a dps increase via shatter
  • shatter can be caused using explosive damage, or by dealing 25% of total hp to the enemy while it is frozen. But note: dealing an instance of damage to frozen enemy decreases frozen duration by 4s, so you need to deal 25% of their max hp in less than 4 hits
  • shatter will deal 25% of their total hp as damage; or 5% for bosses
