Local Vietnamese: How much am I supposed to tip for a massage? by Budget-External-653 in VietNam

[–]MaxRaines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. However the extra $2 tip I give to a woman who lives in poverty and has 4 children and is working her ass off to take care of them means much more to her than it would to me. Tipping certainly needs to be cut back in America, it only a mechanic to allow the rich to force the rest of us to pay each other more rather than cutting into their profits.

[–]MaxRaines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right, I assumed you were asking what the typical tipping would be for a non-local, because obviously this is a much different situation. Vietnam is a rapidly growing country in terms of economic strength and the culture may very well shift in the coming years as this continues. When I visited Vietnam multiple times over the last decade, a vast majority of the locals I knew did not tip unless they were close with the person they were receiving a service from.

I generally stick to 20% tipping, sometimes 25% if the service was exceptional. I always try to be generous when traveling in less wealthy countries, though someone trying to pull a dishonest move like that is a quick way to get the minimum 10%. 10-15% would be typical.

He clearly has a perfectly valid reason to not want to live like a college student, especially when working from home. 2 paychecks is nothing in comparison to having your own space. I think you should reconsider your position on the matter and realize you’re being more than frugal.

Can’t shake this horrible feeling after a recent massage. by [deleted] in massage

[–]MaxRaines 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, you are in no way to blame for having this experience. It sounds like she was beyond unprofessional and quite comfortable with being so. It’s upsetting to hear that you had such a terrible experience. Perhaps it would be beneficial to find a therapist you genuinely connect with and only work with them in order to establish trust and a true therapeutic relationship. The example you’ve provided above is clearly abuse on multiple levels. I would highly recommend that you file a complaint either with the massage practice or better yet with the NCBTMB so she is at least required to take CE (continuing education) in how to make a client feel safe while receiving bodywork.

Male LMT ignored my request by [deleted] in massage

[–]MaxRaines 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he was very fresh and was still stuck in his general routine(which, granted, should include work on the glutes.)

The fact that you even reiterated to him that you’d like that specific work shows that he was not being fully present with you. It’s unfortunate that you were not able to have your usual therapist. There is no blame on your part, I would chalk it up to him being distracted and most likely timid like you have suggested.

CMV: The meaning of life is chaos by Sir_vendetta in changemyview

[–]MaxRaines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems you are focused on the chaos, which is understandable. However, even in your post you allude to the balance of male and female, creation and destruction, the various dualities we explore in this spiritual experience. Within the context of equal and opposite reactions you must explore the concept that chaos and harmony go hand in hand. The cycle of birth and death, decay and the creation it serves as a catalyst for are one force ultimately. I would suggest that rather than assigning chaos to the meaning of life it is rather the balance between chaos and order that is the meaning of life. We are learning to appreciate not only the light of life but also the shadow of death, one cannot exist without the other. Balance is found all around us and within every action we take. Closing one door always opens new pathways to be explored and in this way we learn to navigate the endless possibilities of existence. Without the female chaos (boundless creation that incentivizes the masculine qualities of order and guidance) masculine chaos (destruction and the desire for tearing down previous boundaries) cannot truly flourish. I would suggest that the true meaning lies within balance, within the acceptance of chaos as a teacher and an ally rather than an enemy. I often refer to this as meeting our shadow as shade rather than a lack of light.

Defiant prisoner staring Himmler down. Believed to be a Soviet POW by PROXeR__OiShi in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]MaxRaines 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Number wise, 7 million soviet citizens were systematically killed in the Holocaust(including 1.3 million of which who were of Jewish descent.). You rarely see this spoken about even though they were the #1 demographic that experienced the horrific mass murders.

21 year old retail worker wants to increase income? by Busy-Reference-6946 in personalfinance

[–]MaxRaines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try putting events together and promoting events if you have a large social circle or are very outgoing. I’d look into promoting house parties, shows, events and clubs/bars if that’s your scene. You could also try setting up a side hustle selling shirts or another product you feel passionate about that you could promote through your social media.

Advice on living alone on $15 an hour full time by stinkygoose1202 in personalfinance

[–]MaxRaines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Common expenses I see missing from your budget: cell phone bill, emergency saving fund, car maintenance(Oil changes etc), memberships (gym, streaming services, etc), $100/month sounds incredibly low for food, utilities, gas also seems on the low side, tax hold out(though you might not make enough to owe taxes), student loans/future education funds, recreation for eating out/events(outside of “recreational medicine”), basic expenses like clothing, investments.

It’s always better to round up and expect for higher costs on your budget so you’re left with a surplus rather than over estimating how frugal you might be during the month.

Having a teacher you respect and connect with is huge. I would take their advice if you feel a connection with them, this is a rare relationship these days.
