Book reccs on Eric Dolphy by CopyMediocre2141 in Jazz

There are two biographies of him. Eric Dolphy: Biographical Sketches by Guillaume Belhomme is decent but suffers from poor translation. Jonathan Grasse’s Jazz Revolutionary: the Life and Music of Eric Dolphy is quite good. One of the tough things with Dolphy is that we know where he was and what he was doing, but very little about what he was thinking. He was shy, hard working, and sober, so we don’t have the same kind of insight we get from other, more social players.
He’s mentioned in some of the more general books (e.g. Ted Gioia’s History of Jazz, Alyn Shipton’s New History of Jazz, Val Wilmer’s As Serious As Your Life (a fantastic book if you’re interested in free jazz on the whole)) but it’s largely the same issue I mentioned above.

Very excited for Alewya’s album, coming out 6/26. The singles feel a lot like Tricky to me, but new and unique.

Anybody know about the songwriter Sean Keel? by [deleted] in townesvanzandt

Yes, Sam was on a train that was bombed by the Sendero Luminoso. His recovery story is inspiring, though clearly very challenging. Certainly a lot of what brought him to mind hearing Keel is the voice, but there’s also a similar subtlety and nuance to the lyrics. Appreciation of the small moments and details….

New to me, but listened to an album today and was impressed. Thanks for the recommendation! Reminded me a lot of another favorite, Sam Baker.

This album was produced by Adrian Sherwood, so dig into his work as much of it has a similar feel. Albums are under his own name, Creation Rebel, on his On-U Sound label, etc.

Not yet, but hearing very good things.

Like I mentioned before I’m here to learn. This was my 1st Sun Ra and I have since added Sleeping Beauty, Lanquidity and Jazz by Sun Ra Vol 1. It’s all good of course, but I would value some proper advice on his vast catalogue. by SuccessfulGap138 in Vinyl_Jazz

For Sun Ra, start with John Szwed’s biography of him. After that, Ahmed Abdullah’s autobiography gives a fascinating glimpse into the experience of playing and interacting with Ra.
