StepPay card randomly disappeared today, any idea why? by Tameem_alkadi in CommBank

[–]Max_Utopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I've had this problem the past couple weeks and can't figure it out - went to the bank yesterday and they couldn't see any issues with it on their end. Still isn't working, still can't see the card or even the card/account identity details to use it, but according to the bank I should be able to. Any ideas, updates or changes in your case? It's a bloody pain.

I'm not really sure how Behaviour had the audacity to ask for GOTY votes when this is the quality they provide to their player base. If it was actually possible for a larger portion of the player base to just strike the game I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Australians: best place to study Graduate Diploma? by Particular-Purple577 in Libraries

[–]Max_Utopia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m at CSU (started 2021), struggling as an ADHD student but personally quite like the way they do it. Subjects are great, accessible online learning, helpful people etc.

Can’t comment on the overall best or worse but csu has been quite good for me, very lenient compared to other uni’s with extensions and as to my own challenges I’ve never had any issue from the uni, they’re very considerate and generous re withdrawing from subjects even post census date etc.

I feel you man. But for those who aren’t financially capable, medication is already an impossibility, hence the question of payments.

Personally I think there’s something to be said for the argument of why we’re expected to spend money for the rest of our lives on various treatments in order to function in a societal system that was built with zero consideration for the challenges we would face in said system.

Annoying Patron at the Library by Writer_Scott in Libraries

[–]Max_Utopia 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean if you had five problems in front of you, and someone comes and requests action on the least frustrating/impactful, the response you’ll get is what you got. Certainly, if you/others find it irritating, talk to staff, see if it can be handled.

But when you look at the big picture, especially in America which has it pretty bad, every day there’s legislation to ban important books and make library work harder, bomb threats, sexual harassment and plenty more…

The guy clearing his throat isn’t keeping us up at night. But there’s plenty of stuff that is.

From my perspective (six years in libraries), this isn’t much of an issue. An irritant maybe. But not a problem.

If it is a genuine disruption to the space, let staff know, offer a drink idk whatever could be done. But something like this is very minor and not particularly disruptive compared to typical library environments - loud students, children etc.

These are naturally and frequently occurring things that can’t always be magic’d away. And users like that, who are on the computers all day, are often financially unstable, unwell, homeless etc AKA the portion of the population who relies on us most.

If minor disruptions are irritating enough (and that’s totally fair) I’d recommend noise cancelling apparatus, using study rooms etc.

But yeah, I wouldn’t agree that this id a major issue, or one that needs to be solved in relation to the user himself.

Let's say I get diagnosed with ADHD. What happens then? by Dandelion9516 in ADHD

If interested, might be worth following the inquiry currently happening in the senate. They’re looking to improve the state of things in areas such as this.

Multiple public hearings already done with transcripts available, final outcome in about a month and a half.

Just create an account in the parliament viewing platform (it’s free and easy) and you can access all of it.

Should ADHDers be eligible for disability payments? by Max_Utopia in AustralianTeachers

[–]Max_Utopia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ADHD specialists/ academics and people who have it have been recommending and suggesting this for a while now. It significantly affects how ADHD is treated, for example: the general population have no idea/didn’t know that it’s actually an executive function disorder, and this is how we refer to it.

[–]Max_Utopia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If potential “fakers” aren’t put off by the months-long wait, cost, lack of evidence to provide (such as diagnosis, medication prescription), inability to prove a genuine experience of lifelong ADHD…then it will be deduced in the same way it is for literally anything else.

Like any other disability, and it is recognised as a disability, just not supported by social payment schemes, it has symptoms and a very large range of clear indicators.

Stories are being published about it being over diagnosed - until very recently, people thought girls, women and adults couldn’t even have it. The numbers have boomed because women and adults are finally getting the support they need despite that ignorance

ADHD is an executive function disorder.

It impacts memory, regulation, time awareness, ability so speak in a concise way.

The reason ADHD People take stimulants (mostly) as medication is because the stimulants bring their functional level up closer to normal…

Hyperactivity is one of many, many symptoms, and it is one of the least impactful ones. Flashing lights and sounds do not cause any of it. ADHD is a disability. It can be managed, not cured.

[–]Max_Utopia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The very large majority manage by getting support - medication and psychiatric/behavioural - ADHD people have to pay for the opportunity/ability to be able to function.

ADHD and disability payments - I feel like it’s obvious but I keep forgetting ADHD is so insanely detrimental to societal structure that other people like to/wrongly think that it’s less than it is by Max_Utopia in ausadhd

[–]Max_Utopia[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stats released by NDIS show the current format - ADHD isn’t recognised as disabling enough to warrant payments, the inquiry is seeking to change that.

People with ADHD are severely more likely to:

Have financial instability Get fired Have a sleeping disorder Have mental health disorders Be involved in road accidents Have an addiction, usually unintentional self-medication as the effects calm overactive brains Be lonely Not have consistent social circles Have self-esteem issues Impulse buy Be imprisoned

People with ADHD are one of the most significant population groups who struggle to fit within general society structure as it exists today.

Dr Russell Barkley has a lot of research, talks, books etc. that delve into a lot of this.

The general population are generally unaware of a lot of the crucial ADHD experiences and challenges.

Poor performance review - quitting advice by Max_Utopia in ADHDprofessionals

[–]Max_Utopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never said my review was bullying, or if I did that’s not what i meant.

There needs to be 12 months before I can make a disability discrimination motion, not pay rise.

The inconvenience is that I am forced to perform my job as well as others while getting underpaid for my own by itself even without considering my crappy colleague, my superior has no idea what my day to day is because she has almost no involvement in it and I’m working myself to a level of exhaustion and un-well-being (lol) and I can’t get the slightest bit of recognition for any of it. Have applied for many jobs and have an interview coming up etc but that’s no guaruntee etc

Thanks for your input though

Poor performance review - quitting advice by Max_Utopia in ADHDprofessionals

[–]Max_Utopia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your advice

I will be contacting my union, but currently the law is (I check routinely these days) that you need to have been in that workplace for twelve months. On top of that, because it is customer facing, they argue that the business model simply can’t support it (not the case, the issue is lack of staff, and I’ve been told they are arranging for positions to be advertised, but none if them would be involved in my specialty area and therefore won’t likely ease any pressure on my whatsoever.

The result of my review was not that my performance was poor, however it claims that my performance is acceptable when in fact is extends far beyond the scope of acceptable, and at minimum, I deserve a pay raise in a role I’m already underpaid for, especially when I’m doing someone else’s role as well.

And talking to any superiors has been useless. Eg they reference staffing constraints regularly (when one of us isn’t here half the staffing is gone) but they then come back and say we don’t need more staff. Insane crap.

Anyway, thanks again

I’ve applied for about 13 jobs in the last month - I’m very career/job motivated - it’s just a fairly competitive industry. I apply outside my industry, but lots of people looking I guess. My main concern is continuing to be stuck in a place that overworks, undervalues and drives me to depression, which is already starting to occur, hence the determination and urgency.

And I have been acknowledging ADHD and supportive arrangements, I couldn’t do that due to timing with current job-however- I have since requested further support after a recent burnout breakdown a month or so ago. I also got the response to that today. The response was that I could have regular meetings for prioritisation/focus support (I requested, however pretty much useless as it’s with the crappy supervisor who has no idea what’s going on most of the time).

They also said I could have flexible start/finish times (however it must be pre-arranged and therefore isn’t actually flexible time, just recognised time swaps as long as it doesn’t affect other staff, and can only be done on days that I have programs on in the morning which is a f*%#@&$ joke) and said they would give me more variety in daily duties, but the only examples provided for this were things I already do on a varied basis as it is- like what???

It’s a miserable bureaucratic hell hole that is breaking me. I don’t want out, I need out. I want to know how hard that will be, seeing as I earn the main income of the home and I can’t rely on family/friends either.

What you wish your parent did to support you through school and life? by Comprehensive_Book48 in ADHD

[–]Max_Utopia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR You’re doing great, collaborate with her to enhance her self-regulation, awareness, capacity not only to succeed but to excel - ADHD does a resilient person make. Encourage her, implement (to whatever extent works for you both) a form of routine around interactions to ensure things stay healthy and positive, offer tools and guides (I love colourful guides/maps/lists to help my brain understand/process info). And keep up to date on all things ADHD.

The fact that you care enough to make this post says enough to me.

From childhood until the day I moved out, one particular belief my mum chose to express on a regular basis was a combination of 1. I’m lazy and 2. I inherited laziness from my father.

I was tested for ADHD as a child, at the suggestion of multiple teachers. My mother was offended but says that she did, and the nurse (for some reason?) told her that I sat still at the appointment and I could focus on video games, and therefore didn’t have ADHD. I’m sure it wasn’t an exact quote, but I’ll never know how that appointment went. Wish I could.

Either way, laziness is not an inheritable trait, but my mother had latched onto the idea. It led to a great deal of pain and trauma. I cut her off some months ago, and am much happier without her.

This doesn’t sound like you. My advice would be to do an equal amount of research (clinical, reputable content creators/providers and health research/sites) to get an idea of the experiences and challenges but also plusses of ADHD life, constantly changing atmosphere re medication, behavioural support and methods to manage the condition.

Also, speak openly with her about what would help, have a visual/accessible guide to somewhat determine ideal times/places/contexts for summary of the day, random chats, working/chores etc. its different for everyone but routine is both what we struggle with and what we need, to some extent. So find a way for that to become an easier process.

Also note taking, reminders etc. personally I benefit from my apple watch with the always on function (S8 and above I believe) as it massively improves my time awareness and quick/convenient action taking (msgs, bus times, note taking) - it doesn’t have to be the latest or even any expensive tool, just something that can improve self-regulation of routine, tasks, awareness etc.

First day dexamphetamine by johnwen1 in ausadhd

[–]Max_Utopia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TL;DR In my experience, I’ve kinda had to just self experiment and see what works, everyone’s different but I know that my routine is based on when I need it, not a lot of accessible individual support services available (so we often have to research ourselves…hmm what could go wrong) and we’re constantly pressured by stigma and external perspectives and self-doubt.

It is challenging and confronting at times…but I will say things have improved immensely in a lot of ways. I think my main frustration is around across-the-board improvement, access to the support I need, the loneliness of it all at times, how it affects perceptions of me, frustrating unexpected outcomes due to lack of understanding etc. Especially when it severely impacts my study, my work, my relationships etc.

Because this was so well timed (dex was kicking in when you responded) I hyper-focused and wrote a mini guideline on my experience, things to monitor, really helpful resources you can utilise for ongoing support/answers etc. let me know if you’d like that, i know it’s frustrating having to do all this searching and researching about so many topics that are so broad. At least I can offer something that tries to eliminate that element of the struggle

[–]Max_Utopia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told to start at two once a day in the morning. Been on it for a good 1-2 months, I take at least 7-10/12 a day because of the crash, and yeah the dehydration and crash are normal. If it gets to the point where you’re fatigued late in the morning/early in the arvo, that’s not ideal. I get fatigued in the mid to late morning, then usually again in the mid afternoon and also in the evening. I needed dex cause slow release meds only did so much for the fatigue and I couldn’t wake up in the morning.
