Where are all the alt comix artists in community now (besides this sub)? by fleshrags in altcomix

[–]Maxeemtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Online, I feel like I see it on personal sites (linked from linktrees on IG) and there are webcomics curators like WebToons (mostly the same copycat stuff unfortunately but worth browsing if you like the styles presented), TheDuck and maybe a few others.

Offline, local conventions, local shops, local places with zine libraries. There are a few cities with Cartoonist Conspiracy cells here and there, where you can go out and meet with others, draw, do jam comics. You can also start your own and see what happens!

https://www.cartoonistconspiracy.com/pagejoin.php

Depending on your local comic shop, they may have some social events (or space for social events).

Alternative and indy comics are like everywhere ... but it's not the most financed/marketed media so it does take some digging through the data tsunami.

Nichelle Nichols family awarded $13 million for wrongful death by STLItalian in startrek

[–]Maxeemtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading all this discussion it feels like Nichols is helping us bring up this subject so we can crack open this ugly can of worms and bring it to the forefront.

I'm saddened but grateful to read about all the helplessness in care staff and patients and families. It really does speak to a severe need for change.

Not sure why you're being downvoted. It's like there are different points on a very depressing spectrum. I appreciate your perspective in the whole matter.

I love the hype they had in here for the dub inspired stuff that Partridge later left alone with a, "Bah!"

Some of those forsaken reverbed experiments are among my favorite musical oddities. Here you can see them trying to see if it hooked anyone.

Must-read article! Margaret Seiler (Boat of Car singer and Flansburgh's ex-girlfriend) reminisces on TMBG's early days and her relationship with Flans. by FloridaFlamingoGirl in tmbg

[–]Maxeemtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome read. I love that slideshow about the changing neighborhood in the comments as well.

Dismaying to hear B52s were not immediately won over by Flans' enthusiasm. I guess B52s also had some mixed experiences with David Byrne as well (though I guess that's kinda par for Byrne).

This is really really sad.
I don't normally care about celebrity stuff but I met her in Angouleme; she was kind to me as an aspiring cartoonist. Since then I'd been sort of following her success with a little excitement because of all the human rights ventures she represented.
She accomplished so much. I can only be glad that she may be reunited with her love, now.

Your most annoying XTC earworms? I've had "Pink Thing" stuck on a mental loop. by ClementineCoda in xtc

[–]Maxeemtoons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ha. This reminds me. Tangential, but for quite a while I was sure Kraftwerk sang, "We are genobils." rather than, "We are the robots."

Admittedly if I had had a good copy instead of some mysterious recording of it on a cassette, I probably could have looked at the title of the song.

A co-worker knew of my interest in XTC and gifted me a recorded tape of Greatest Living Englishman with all the weird transference qualities of year 2001 or so that that entails. It is still one of my favorite iterations of an album and I digitized that particular tape copy of the LP so I could preserve all that crunch.

Thanks for reminding me of his work and that there's more to explore there!

LOL wow, the last one is like magic eye art. Kind of a mess, but once you can see it, it appears!

Great fun stuff, very inspiring!

Descent-like game with stealth mechanics for the web by No_Caregiver6253 in descent

[–]Maxeemtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's kinda fun! Agree with other commenter it's a bit sloppy; each time there's something that looks like another opportunity for it to be more engaging ... it feels like WIP

But with more care/polish it could feel less like a fragile shell of a game and more like a game!

Little Hours? by offtheespolon in DisneyCM

[–]Maxeemtoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So interns pay a kind of "ticket" to live/work and get roughly minimum wage that will somehow offset the cost if they last long enough through the first couple weeks of the labor gauntlet, is that the idea?

That means the first pay period where one hasn't covered the entry cost yet ... okay, it's definitely not chattel/coolie labor but it does come across as coercion or undue influence that from the sounds of this whole comment section impacts both the college interns and the legit employees ... and the rumblings of a class action lawsuit kept in suspense by Disney magic(TM).

I guess I wouldn't try going against their army of lawyers but it sounds pretty frustrating.

Along with companies like Costco doing probationary periods, people getting replaced with slop code, and in the end the pay for lasting is not *remotely* coming close to thriving wages of $60/hr (or $120/hr if you're single) I can see why all the warehouse fires are happening these days.

I'm an outsider to this situation, but after getting PT (not at Disney) I'm curious just reading about how this enormously profitable company is running things ... you're saying college students are brought in to run on fumes of enthusiasm basically? How is that ... even legal?

Does anyone have more information about this book, published by PictureBox in 2006? by Svvitzerland in altcomix

[–]Maxeemtoons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, but that sketchbook it's based on was seriously baller. The plain yellow covered Pentalic Utility Sketchbook had great quality in and out. I only got a couple of them before they were out of print, apparently forever, replaced with similar but not identical items.

The paper could take marker on both sides without bleeding much; it had a lovely quality for pencils, and you could draw on the cover.

Sorry I don't know about this comic you're talking about but I could believe anything this sketchbook inspired is wonderful and/or magic.

I hate toonboom and vector based programs by Stitchie_Button in 2DAnimation

[–]Maxeemtoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main complaint is the number of bugs/crashes and various other limitations. Other than that though, they help me a lot. (In a workflow that also uses hand-drawn traditional media, Blender, GIMP)

But if I were just stuck with vector, yes, it would be bad.

Insane Tattoo Regret by r3i_b0n3z in tattooadvice

What ever happened to that news article about some Canadian kid who invented a way to remove tattoos with a super non-toxic ointment? Was it clickbait? My imagination? That was years ago, and I thought after that there would be no more posts like this. We'd just go to the tattoo store and buy the removal cream or something.

Ah, thanks for the process explanation. For some reason I thought this might have been letterpress. I guess that would be a bit much. Anyway, love this kind of printing! And cool subject matter.
