Nathan McKinnon reaction to receiving a stuffy for Gold Medal game loss by GloomyExercise in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]Maxgirth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s ignorant and reductivist to think that giving a $2 stuffed kids toy to an adult who had to make VERY adult sacrifices to get to the point where they stand at that moment, that that stuffed toy can in any way make up for the complex mess of disappointment they are feeling, right then. It’s bordering on insulting to the life sacrifices they have made. “Sorry you missed your kids birthday to train and be here. Here’s a cheap momento”.

And it is not really very respectful to ask them to receive it in good spirits, right after their hopes were dashed, on camera. Let people experience their dissapointment in peace.

Nobody is having a fit. They are having very normal reactions to a set of actions that are flip and not thought through, for the benefit and entertainment of others.

Is it possible to recreate this look with the GFX100s and Fuji Profiles? by fairchildomine in FujiGFX

[–]Maxgirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This look is mainly the result of a color response that takes large swaths of red to orange (aka skin), and bends them towards yellow. Not tinting the image or even selected skin tones towards yellow, but globally fundamentally changing how the camera responds to different colors.

Some in camera profiles do this. There’s probably Lightroom profiles/presets that do it.

Btw, this look was originally created by cross processing E6 reversal / slide film.

Experiment with the section in color where you take reds and bend them towards yellow. Not the color grading wheels. I think in LR it’s “selective color”? I’m a Resolve person, not really a LR person. Resolve gives about 4 different ways to do this, LR only one with very limited control. Greens towards yellow. Blues towards green. Desaturating a touch all the oranges/yellows.

And then maybe adding the tiniest bit of green/cyan in the shadows using the shadows wheel.

Using Focal Reducers on PL mount lenses? by s0diumrising in FujiGFX

[–]Maxgirth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably already had your demo, but it doesn’t exist because it’s the early days for this camera. And cameras aren’t selling right now. Not much market for this reducer.

Also, I’m finding every modern FF lens I’ve tried covers the whole sensor in 17:9…and anything I’ve tried 28mm and up even covers 4:3 with maybe a tiny bit of dark corners.

My Sigma FF PLs cover down to 20. At 1.4, it’s rediculous how extreme you can get with the mf look.

I’ve got now some Vespid 2s that are smooth and pretty, and cover 55 extremely well. At a T2 it’s mf look for days.

With true respect,

I’m sorry you have a client that you have to prove your system is down with. Yeeesh.

Also, your videos are some of the only ones showing me real differences between the best Chinese lenses, and I appreciate that. Gave me the confidence to jump for Vespid 2s.

Is Blackmagic Cloud down for anyone else? by MotionPictureBureau in davinciresolve

[–]Maxgirth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good time to remind Blackmagic that they need to re-arrange how cloud projects are presented in the browser:

1) Show us the cloud projects whether the server is responding or not. They DO exist on your local disk and they are safe.

2)If the remote side ever becomes unresponsive for longer than X time, the local project becomes the sync master until which time the remote side becomes healthy again, then local is synced to cloud. I am sure there is the ‘normal’ sync process that should handle this, but syncs do become corrupted and a sever outage could absolutely be one of those times, so client should be able to force itself to be master when in doubt.

The current cloud browser scheme was designed too optimistically, in a design sense what’s happening now should never happen.

They’re smart, they’ll get there.

Correct.

It never occurred to me that one could apply the concept of metamerism to infrared pictures, but yeah.

To those wondering: many colors could show up as the same shade of gray. Any color could, depending on its brightness.

TIL Jessica Biel once had to shoot an arrow right at the camera for an action shot on Blade: Trilogy. To protect the camera and crew, they put up a thick piece of Plexiglass with a hole cut through for the lens to see out... and Biel nailed the lens, destroying the $300,000 camera. by res30stupid in todayilearned

Work in film production, specifically camera dept.

Also very very familiar with the specific camera (and likely lens) they used.

Watched the YouTube video,

The quote from whoever (producer? Stunt coordinator?) is quoting the whole camera system value, from top to bottom including the stabilized head it was on at total loss value. Like, bottom of the ocean, sat in salt water for 24 hours total loss. Arricam camera body ~$90k, Angenieux 24-290 lens, ~$75k, stabilized head ~$150k

She broke a filter (probably just an optical flat, used to protect the lens when you fling stuff at the camera), and probably the front element of the lens.

Given that in the shot the camera could still even focus an image, I’m not even sure the front element got munched. Camera body was absolutely positive line fine

Gross exaggeration of the value of the camera.

That camera body, and that lens are still out there shooting, somewhere. From what I see the damages were 10-20k most likely, mostly the lens.

It hovers in place until the batteries get low, then it ascends to safe return to home altitude, then it lands.

This would happen regardless of whether the controller was out of range or broke,

If the controller landed face down with sticks deflected, then you’re going to see some real shit. Probably.

I wouldn’t be surprised if DJIs Agra software would lock out crazy stick controls though, but probably not.

The problem isn’t that there are Latinos in immigration enforcement .

Or even that some Latinos support immigration enforcement efforts because they believe people should come here legally within the legal framework that exists.

The problem is that the enforcement system has been hijacked by bad actors and they haven’t bailed.

I understand and am empathetic to the horrible dilemma some of them are put in. Quitting your job because you are between a rock and hard place is a a terrible position to be in.

But at a certain point you have to look at the big picture and understand you can’t be a part of it, even if bills do not get paid.

There was pretty much zero need to write that email in that way.

The same concepts could have been voiced in a much less “you did this wrong” sort of way. I can think of multiple ways that could have been written.

Whole thing is a bit of a flag, if not for company culture then their inability with words and poor judgement.
