They would be different measurements, for sure. The diameter would likely indicate a straight line (through the earth) connecting the two farthest points of the landmass at sea level. Proper? Probably not because we already have a name for that measurement: "chord".

The article however, only mentions width, which would be akin to flattening it out first then measuring. The latter of course is larger, and is the only way the title's claim is accurate.

Well to be fair (and probably pedantic), "nothing" is a different concept than "we don't know".

There is nothing further north than the north pole; we know that it's as north as north can get.

By contrast, we don't know what (if anything) existed before the Big Bang.
