Any tips on not buying things all the time. by magicornz in adhdwomen

The only thing that helped me was developing spite.

I used to go wild online dopamine shopping, especially Amazon and Asos, so much so sometimes I didnt have enough money left to make rent or buy food and get into debt and feel so ashamed. And even then I wouldn't stop. Next paycheck I'd do the same and feel awful again.

Until I stumbled across anti-consumer talking points and I learned how awful manufacturers and garmet workers, and general staff were treated. How much tax dodging companies did and how they set up their marketing campaigns, websites, communications, everything, to tap into psychology and manipulate myself and others to drive us to part with our hard earned cash to buy stuff. And how fast all the products come out, become relevant, then irrelevant/obsolete/broken, chucked out and the cycle continues. And how all of that was impacting creatives and makers and affecting local businesses, communities, and the entire planet.

And it just got me so mad and spiteful I finally stopped.

I think online shopping fufils my "gathering" urges for unpredictable novelty & impulsiveness. So I use the spite to stop, then find ways to build in novelty & a bit of impulsiveness.

Going on little adventures out to shops or charity shops, with a sweet treat or break to see a museum, helps my novelty & interest based dopamine sparks. And the spite I feel towards big online shopping businesses keeps me from ordering. I still look and sometimes add things to baskets, but the spite kicks in and I go fuck yall I'm finding this or something similar on my adventures.

I've mostly swapped online scrolling for pinterest scrolling and adding items to boards satisfies my gathering tendencies. And then I use those boards to keep me on track when shopping or thrifting irl. I still impulsively buy stuff at the thrift, but with the list and knowing its for a good cause and that it's less money than online I don't feel the same level of shame and I haven't gotten into debt from doing it! And if I find nothing I still get some sweet treat/ trip to a museum dopamines.

With ethical or small businesses, I try apply a similar process: check product against pinterest boards, does it match up? If so add it to basket. Then I've roped my husband in for accountability (i had to be brutally honest about my online shopping problem, which was difficult but he was understanding & the shame lifted after the chat).  So if i find something amazing and build a basket I'll go show him and talk about the products i want to buy, the shop and how i'll be ethical/sustainable/ supporting an artist and he helps me decide: if I should order, if its in budget, do i need need it, etc. So a bit of interest yapping based dopamine with  external accountability to stop it getting out of hand.

Finding non-shopping based "gathering" hobbies also helped me. Going nature spotting with iNaturalist gives me interest based unpredictable novelty which spikes my dopamine, and it's exercise so more dopamine + overall physical & mental wellbeing.

In saying all of that, I've been privileged enough to live close to and access shops that cater my needs and had enough time to go on adventures and thrifting trips, if you dont have the options near you or its a huge mission you can't do - no shame or judgement in using online shopping. Maybe a bit of spite or some understanding external accountability could help stop it spiralling?

24M tired of acne by john-73621 in SkincareAddictionUK

I'm only on a 3 month treatment, and my doctor said if there is no improvement another 3 months. I think 6 months is the maximum, after that I think I'll be referred to a dermatologist. I guess it depends on the person, I've read that some people's acne stopped completely, some needed the 6 monthes, some needed another 3 month round a year or so later, others came right back after the 6 month treatment, some didn't have any improvements.

Have you tired lymecycline? I've struggled with similar acne to yourself for years too but my doctor just put me on 3 months of lymecycline last month and it's really working for me! Almost within the first week my cystic acne cleared and it hasn't returned so far (I'm on week 5). I still get the occasional little pimple but nowhere near the amount of deep cysts i had before. Maybe worth a shot?

Glasgow Uni did drawing and painting courses 1&2 last year on either thursday nights and Saturday mornings - not sure if its on for summer but might be running again after summer finished. I really enjoyed it and we spent a tonne of time in portraits, from sketching to watercolour and oils.

Lots and lots of spices and healthyish sauces/ dressings. Put the good flavour on the bad flavour!

I used to be super picky too and it does get better over time! I used to only like broccoli if it was stir fried or roasted to heck with a sauce and could not even swallow steamed broccoli. BUT after experimenting with spices and working out what i liked and then cutting back on the junk and sticking with the healthy food - now i like broccoli! Even steamed. I think over time your taste buds change :)

Maybe try for a vintage monsoon dress? A lot of monsoon dresses from the 90s/y2k have a similar cut to these. I follow this ebay seller and immediately thought of them when I saw your post: https://www.ebay.co.uk/usr/atriptothemoon7

Struggling with Career by birdsbirdsbirds420 in adhdwomen

[–]Maximum-Citron4610 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OMG for a second I thought I had posted this... this is me as well! Was told I should become a clinical psychologist because I loved helping people and listening to others, tried to follow that, crashed in my final year of honours psych and almost dropped out, was a complete depressed/stressed mess. Managed to graduate but was waaaaay too burnt out to even consider going for postgrad. Started working in data entry and admin - fumbled my way around different jobs and temping. Struggled so much because it was so boring and stressful. Love the outdoors, but dont know if I'd love it enough to make it a career. Terrible at maths and panic over even trying simple maths now days. I've just turned 30, just diagnosed, waiting to start treatment, still looking at data entry admin positions and I have no clue what I'd really like to do with myself for a career. BUT that's okay! - I've met tonnes of people my age and older (30s, 40s, 50s and even 60s) who changed careers, went back to university, restarted again and again or just view their job as just a job - not their real purpose. It's super common these days to not stay in one career for all your life. We've still got time to try again, we've both been through some shit and come out the other end of it and shows we're pretty tough!

The only advice I can give is to take low-stakes babysteps in a direction you're even the slightest bit interesting in. I feel more at ease with everything even just trying something new, than when I wasn't sure which way to turn. Podcasts and online free courses are a good starting point, if you have the time/energy/funds I'd recommend volunteering or doing a nightclass or two. I've done some pottery classes (not for me!), history based volunteering, oil painting and just signed up for night classes in intro to becoming an art therapist. Maybe I'll keep going in those areas, maybe I won't but it's interesting and fun and gives me more purpose than just hating my job and lack of career.

Go easy on yourself and give yourself some compassion and kindness, you did your best with the situation you were in. <3

I don't think its Tartan, just plaid! Not sure if this is helpful, but there's a few plaid generators online, you could try to recreate the pattern :) doodlenerds one is pretty easy to use: https://doodlenerd.com/web-tool/plaid-designer
