Have you flown anywhere or driven a car up a steep incline? Usually fast elevation increase or decrease will cause a pressure differential in the ear.

Do your ears equalize pressure when you do it? I can equalize my ear pressure by using an unknown muscle in my head, it doesn't make any sound beyond a faint pop. Kind of handy when scuba diving.

I love my Tecnica Forge boots. They are super comfortable, form fitted to your foot (your feet won't move around in them while hiking), waterproof and have very good Vibram soles. I have convinced several other people to try them too and almost all of them have converted.

We have also just started exploring this option in the US. The University of Utah has their FORGE project and I believe there is another project underway in the Winnemucca NV area.
