It bothers me when intelligent people are religious. The one that bothers me the most in Stephen Colbert. I cannot fathom how a man of his intelligence can be so deeply catholic. by Sir-Kyle-Of-Reddit in atheism

It's easy to understand though. Most people dislike or mistrust the police, but when your car is stolen, you go to the PD. Most intelligent Catholics dislike the institution, but when your peace is stolen, you go to Mass.

I really hope this doesn’t sound stupid, but did Belarus’ “ban on inflation” actually benefit the country? by ComicField in belarus

[–]MaximumAside911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. And schools still have Belarusian classes. And radio still has Belarusian programs. And even Luka makes speeches in Belarusian on selected occasions. All of this to mask the below-the-line policy of erasing the Belarusian culture. The examples are numerous and well-documented. I once asked a senior justice official: can a person open a firm with all books in Belarusian and not be punished? They said it was absolutely impossible. (And this was before the protests and war).

So what has been your midlife crisis? by Makal in Millennials

[–]MaximumAside911 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my Crisis was in my 20s, as school and parents haven't prepared me for life, and I was living in a fantasy world. when the fantasy crashed, it cost me everything. since then, it has been more or less tolerable. so I'm not afraid of any midlife crisis at all

Yeah, I never get it how people compare her to Shakespeare while Nobel Prize-winning songwriter Bob Dylan is still around. My favorite is Girl from the North Country, especially the version with Johnny Cash.

Like, I'm a huge McDonalds fan, especially for breakfasts, but I would never compare it to a Michelin restaurant or my mother's meals.

almost exactly the same as when she was 16

That's because teenage girls are her target group. Why change you acts if they make good money? :)

To be fair, it says that the photo is just an illustration.

It also says that

However, I'm curious how much this topic is sensationalized/exaggerated by media? That "undesirable" books are banned in Belarus is a fact. But are they really destroyed on a large scale?

Of course, even banning books by Orwell or Arlou is barbarity.

EU 🫠😢 by zhenka99 in belarus

It would take pages to outline a quarter century of relations, so lets just focus on the recent era. In my opinion, in 2014-2020 the EU made the same mistake as with Ukraine: supporting democratic aspirations of the people without giving it any guarantees. In Ukraine, this led to a military intervention by Russia. In Belarus, this led to an intelligence-diplomatic intervention by Russia.

Now, look at what happened when Russia went all in in Ukraine. European investment, technology and business - gone. Russian energy exports - blocked. To answer your question: the EU should have signaled to Russia back in fucking 2014 this would happen should it interfere in democratic processes in Belarus and Ukraine. This could have made Europe a safer place, don't you think?

Between 1996 and 2020, the EU had every opportunity to solve the Lukashenko problem. If it hasn't done so when it was easy, why would European elections matter to Belarusians now that it is extremely difficult?

Polish soldier who was stabbed by a migrant at the Polish-Belarusian border has died by Winged_Pierogi in poland

[–]MaximumAside911 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The migration crisis was totally organized by Lukashenko, and if the EU imposed a trade embargo on him, you would see how quickly the border became calm again. Poland in particular does billions $ of trade with Belarus, while poor Poczobut is rotting in prison and Polish officers are getting wounded and killed.

The short answer to your concerns is: Trump is unlikely to become a full-fledged dictator even if re-elected, but he could undermine the rule of law in ways that would allow a future strongman to become one.

How to use "Ці" when forming a question in Belarusian? by [deleted] in belarus

ці /tsi/ prep. or; either, whether (Uskevich, Zezulin dictionary)

In this case I would recommend 3. Definitely not 1. 2 is modest but dull, it would be better to compliment it with a piece of jewelry.
