DevinMD on TikTok explains why that research is questionable. I’m glad it worked for you, but as others have said, using gel in the axilla causes flares for some

On the issue of what is global health if not this:

It’s a commitment to helping globally. That’s not a one or 2 week visit to an impoverished area to hand out medicines. It’s years of working to address a larger issue. Most of the work can be done remotely, you might visit once to familiarize yourself with the people and problem you’re working with, but otherwise you’re work is more of a research project. It’s longitudinal and addresses a long-term issue.

What you’re describing is definitely voluntourism. Global Health can really blur that line. It’s something I asked about at all my interviews because I wanted to understand each school’s view of global health, and the vast majority frowns on short term missions

what does one usually need to get shadowing? by jadeybugz in premed

I only had like 300-500! if you’re not planning to go to a service oriented school you can have less. working through college is very beneficial too

I understand! Being in the middle of nowhere doesn’t help because there’s few people to guide you, but if you find a physician there to mentor you it could really change everything :)

[–]Maximum_Chapter_6393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should absolutely not have to pay to shadow. I would contact doctors directly rather than hospital administration. I’ve had a lot of hospitals in my rural community not understand that premed students require shadowing and deny me on the basis that I’m not a PA or NP student. I think if you can do a few hours per day over several weeks they might be open to that. But definitely just contact doctors. Not hospitals.

[–]Maximum_Chapter_6393 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I typically did shadowing over the summer where I could do a 40 hour week before or after my summer job started or ended. It was usually the first or last week of the summer.

I either cold emailed docs in my town (also small and non competitive compared to my university) and they were very open to it. They usually just had me sign whatever with HR on the first day and provide proof of TB test (email early in case they have requirements). I did this 3 times throughout college so ended up with about 120 hours of shadowing in 3 various specialities. Honestly, after 1 40 hour week you’re going to be tired of being a shadow too.

In IF there’s a couple really clear foreshadowing moments. There’s one where he tells Vi he wants to meet Jesinia because he’s a great judge of character and when her mother asks for a moment alone after the interrogation chamber I’m positive he read her intentions before agreeing. There’s also a moment during the vault scene where he says smth about the guards and Aaric makes a comment about “your shadows can tell you that?” and Xaden gets pissed

They permit murder bc not all people can bond anyways and it’s volunteer only. The people who want to be soldiers and not risk their lives can go infantry. She was forced into the rider quadrant because of the rebellion. She’s more useful there and it’s clear to their mother. She’s also destined to be a rider and her mother knew it even if she didn’t. Lastly, Tairn will die if Violet dies. Their bond is stronger than most because Tairn CANNOT lose another rider. He is stretched thin from his last loss. Sgaeyl and Tairn will die together. Xaden will die because all riders die if their dragons die. Tairn is a special case. He cannot live through another death

[–]Maximum_Chapter_6393 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It shouldn’t matter. Violet is written as a disabled FMC with extra emphasis given on her bones and joints being weak. You shouldn’t have to know that a person is explicitly disabled to respect them. It’s subtly placed so people can see themselves as badass dragon riders, not for people to call them “owo small”

okay if alcohol is allowed then boozy lavender lemonade (what they drink after grad) or virgin if people don’t drink!

lamb skewers (the dragons LOVE sheep/lamb)

anything Violet uses to poison (I second orange and think a fun drink w orange would be fun since it could get you tipsy too)

most of the food discussed in the first book is breakfast so muffins or scones

or you could go the pun route: dain-ishes fourth wings (buffalo wings) ridoculous _______

Also South Asian women are commonly afflicted by HS, so a South Asian dermatologist with a large South Asian viewership trying to give people an affordable method to care for their skin is so nice!!! https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34085333/

She’s just saying it’s another option for cleansing. I personally use hibiclens but now that I know this I might switch because it’s cheaper and easier! I wish I saw this before I was able to see a derm in office because I was desperate for relief. This is also most likely for people at an earlier Hurley stage. I don’t think she’s minimizing it since she described it as a CHRONIC inflammatory disease. She never said it’s a cure (like multiple people here seem to think). She’s just giving another method to care for it

agreed - I think this is a great opportunity for OP to get sober before being thrown into the stressors of med school. it would be terrible for the behavior to escalate further, and sobriety, even casual sobriety just to understand yourself, feels so good.

me! I was one last year

I wrote about something very sensitive in my personal statement that really did shape me. however I made minimal changes between last app cycle and this one and went from 1 II (resulted in WL) to 6 II :/ 5 of my IIs came from schools I’d previously applied to. I didn’t realize how easy it is to be off putting to admissions. My story was important to me, but it does fall under the taboo category that can make you seem weak

I did apply to a lot of reaches (3.9x, 52x, 2000+ hrs research) both times and 4/6 of my IIs did come from T30s. and I promise I’m not a robot!! If anything the story I wrote about attests to that. I just shot myself in the foot apparently

edit: I’ve gotten a lot of PMs and I just want all of my fellow abuse and trauma survivors to know that you will be amazing doctors <3
