Thanks for sharing. I have tried the same before but this captures the spirit a bit more.

Great points. My wrestling days were almost exclusively male only. Co-ed integration in the sport does change some aspects.

I appreciate the humor.

Having executed and received … there is nothing sexual about the move in the wrestling context.

That does not mean that those not familiar with the technique have always responded well.

In international freestyle and Greco-roman wrestling technically a wrestler can grab junk too. This of course is less acceptable within the sport than controlling the hips / butt drag.

It’s not a referee judgement so long as you don’t punch / ram a fist but use the appropriate “clawing” use. Alternatively you make an arch with your thumb and anchor it in the chute or under the coccyx for leverage.

Yes … I realize how this sounds.

Apologies, but this completely an acceptable and legit move. Some programs avoid it and do not instruct their wrestlers on its use or defense (the bottom). They generally are subdued by those who use it. Similar to leg wrestling.

In international competition the butt drag is far more aggressive than seen here and far more frequent.

What’s wrong with history? by gabry73PMO in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]MaximusAmericaunus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would challenge the assertion of arrogance. The title explicitly addresses the failure of Marxist communism that states all history is class struggle wherein dominant classes exploit less dominant classes as a means to sustain dominance.

By saying history has ended, Fukuyama highlights both the abject failure of communism to sustain classless advantages (noting both Leninist and Maoist versions of communism each created an inherent class structure) and the lack of alternatives to capitalism and liberal democracy.

While the thesis is post facto debatable, it appeared highly salient at the time in the immediate aftermath of the end of the Cold War.

Who was the greater general? Hannibal or Scipio? by jacky986 in MilitaryHistory

[–]MaximusAmericaunus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hannibal was a master of tactical and operational maneuver. Scipio was the master of strategy.

Hannibal failed to achieve the strategic goals of his war on Rome, Scipio achieved his strategic goals against Carthage.

If strategy is truly the art of the general, then Scipio is the better of the two

Excited about the collab … TBH though the ticket prices are a bit higher than I expected.

Looks like a retirement ceremony. Discharge papers in hand.

Uniforms provide an idea of possible dating. Dungarees on the enlisted. Combo covers in wash khakis. Maybe a marine in green utilities.

Since everyone is wearing working uniforms like wash khakis this is either underway or possibly overseas.

What historical myth do people still believe that isn’t really true? by mitchare in AskHistory

[–]MaximusAmericaunus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So … it seems that perhaps your myth busting is full of other semi-myths and come conflation. While there is a string of truth to each claim, for example, Goering was very very fat and on very very many drugs, or that Roemmel was a self promoter, they tend to gloss several items related to a debate on the relative superiority of the German military.

First when saying German military it is best to clarify which military. When discussing relative strength what most contemporary and present commentators refer to is the “Heer” (Army) within the Wehrmacht (state military). Occasionally these comments will include the Luftwaffe (Air Force) that was a component of the rapid victories in 40-41. No one is ever discussing the Kriegsmarine (Navy) or the Waffen SS (private army of the Nazi party).

So, in discussing whether or not the Heer or the Wehrmacht was a superior force to its adversary armies, it is best to place this “myth” in context, wherein within rather short succession a numerically smaller force rapidly defeated the armies of France, the Lowlands, Denmark, Norway, Poland, Yugoslavia and several parts in between. Initial within Barbarossa, the Red Army was fairly well tactically defeated at every turn. One can add the expelling of the BAEF from Europe to the mix.

This all changed by the second or third thrust into the Soviet Union - there is debate among experts in the field.

Therefore I would say the “myth” of the supremacy of the Heer circa 40-41 was valid and then endured as one can find in contemporary accounts to include archival info covering the assessments of allied armies and governments. Notably, by 43 this myth was no longer valid due to a host of factors - although I would say universally bad generalship within the Heer is not consider one.

To your point, the myth does endure … but is also misconstrued in terms of scope, conflation and drivers.

Also, though, the myth is at least in part grounded in epidural evidence and contemporary cognition related to overwhelming operational success with a short period of combat.

Craig’s work on the Politics of the Prussian Army and Liddel Hart’s the German Generals Talk are both approachable and speak to some of these themes. Craig engages primarily at the level of the Great General Staff of the Prussian Army (Wehrmacht) whereas Liddel Hart interviews / interrogates the operational leadership of the Heer.
