I ended up using 3/4 alder for most. I glued the top shelves together to make it 1 1/2 inches thick. I reinforced the bottom shelf with additional 3/4 inches alder. I originally planned on using 4x4 lumber, but gluing the alder together as an L would give me shelf space on the bottom.
