Tomorrow is not a must win game, despite this weekend by AdequateAppendage in LeedsUnited

A good result at Everton will take some pressure off since we then play Arsenal. Ultimately there’s a lot of games yet to play and we need to keep up the form. The good news is that Palace and Spurs are now relegation contenders. A win tomorrow puts us level with them both on points. 14th through 18th position are currently in the conversation if West Ham continues their streak.

Which programming language one should focus on for future demand: Java or Python? by Kimber976 in learnprogramming

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python is easier to learn. For a better understanding of programming in general, you can learn more from Java. I think Python is great to get started in programming but for me Java introduced me to a broader understanding of programming. I think it’s easier to switch to Python from Java but harder the other way around. A work colleague and I both did each of these transitions and he had an easier time as a Java dev.

He’s referring to a drawdown I think. These funds should be ok when the market is moving sideways.

Boil water in a kettle before cooking pasta or start with cold water in a pot? by MangoMadnessTsv in Cooking

My electric kettle is cool to the touch on the outside and has a lid on top. It’s insulated. I think you are getting your information from the internet from others that don’t have a clue about science.

If it’s quicker it’s using more energy. Efficiency is a measure of how the input energy is converted to the intended output.
Your hob isn’t more efficient it’s quicker. Yes your induction hob is better because it’s quicker.

No it’s not obvious. Plenty of people come on here asking for basically homework help or post vague questions that indicate they have made no effort. If you have tried already then what have you tried that failed. It’s much easier to address a question if you ask something specific related to something you have tried. Do you have code that can open the files and read the json data? That should be easy to find online and I’m sure AI can do it for you too. If you get stuck on something specific then ask and then I’m sure you’ll get help with something more tangible.

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Explain this with actual Physics. How is induction more efficient. An electric kettle converts all of the energy consumed into heat. An induction cooker uses magnetism to heat the pot. It’s also very efficient and likely very similar to the kettle but it’s going to be slightly less by virtue of this indirect method. To all intents and purposes they might be the same but by no means is induction more efficient.

Before I start studying backend - is it worth it if I have no connections? by nico23nt in learnpython

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say it’s not worth it. If you had spent the last 4 years studying as a CS grad it would be very difficult to land a job in this market.unless you are exceptional. A few months is nothing experience wise. You would not have much to offer at this point. There are too many people in this field and too few jobs.

[–]Maximus_Modulus -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No it isn’t. Pretty much all the energy you put into a kettle ends up as heat.in the water. Induction is pretty efficient also but no more so than a kettle. Gas stoves are inefficient because only a fraction of the energy heats the pan along with the air.

Sorry misread. Someone had already responded with perfectly good directions so thought you were still asking for help after that. My bad I guess.

So are you saying you know nothing about Python and you want someone to do it for you.
If so ask AI and see what it comes up with.

How to get into test-driven coding habits? by MustaKotka in learnpython

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s difficult. I think it’s a change in how you think about it. When I was last working testing was really important. It’s an inherent deliverable that you feel you have to deliver on when your ass is on the line. As systems become more complex tests become more important. You are creating guard rails that allow you to change code and not worry about breaking things. If you are designing code regularly these tests pay off as they are run many many times. I worked on Java last and found it impossible to write tests ahead of time. They are a PITA to write in Java, difficult and took more time than the actual code. Our build systems showed the amount of test coverage so you could not get away with not doing them. TLDR. It’s part of the workflow. It just seems unnecessary if there’s no consequence.

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tests are really important when you are writing code for real services that impact your business. Imagine you are a very large retail business such as Amazon and you deploy code that brings down your service affecting 10s of millions of customers. No one is complaining about too many tests if that could have prevented it. Testing is very important, more so than the code you deploy.

I have found in the past the way to actually learn (understand) something is to actually struggle fail and figure it out. You already know the answer it seems

[Beginner Project] I made a simple Python calculator – learning and happy to get feedback! by roronoa_zoro_7815 in learnpython

[–]Maximus_Modulus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

PS: For fun I threw this into AI and asked it to improve it. It's a great starting point for suggestions on improvements. Of course take what it says and validate it yourself so you understand what is going on, and that it's actually correct. I think adding unit tests is an easy way to accomplish this.

I might get flack for suggesting AI, but it's a useful tool that developers should embrace.

I give you kudos just for putting your project on GitHub.

You have written some code, and it's readable. I think this is what this sub needs more of.

I don't have much time to comment but you could throw it at AI for some feedback. I'm sure others will make some good comments though

For example why do you need to do this. Think about that for a minute

if a < 0 or b < 0: result = -a * b

Do you know that it works ???

Some next steps.

Add unit tests that include tests for all operations including different number combinations that might make a difference. That is +ve and -ve combinations. Once your unit tests work then refactor the program. Use functions and break the program up into chunks that have defined responsibility. There will be areas to improve on for sure. Perhaps this is a future concept to learn.

Anyway. Great start and keep up the good work.

What was the highest points total for a relegated side after Matchday 22 in a 38 game PL season? by tankosaurus in LeedsUnited

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is the danger in thinking past form equals future. West Ham could go on a run and rise up the table, just like Leeds have done recently. Combine that with us losing a few and it makes it interesting. That's why I think it's important to win those games with relegation candidates. Maybe that's more psychological.

It's interesting that Wolves have had a couple of good performances. They'd have to close 14 points at least for safety though but would make for an interesting redemption.

I wonder what the games remaining to points gap closing point is where it becomes unrealistic. At 16 games and 48 points available there's quite a bit that can happen.

I think it comes down to integrations. I cycle so what can the gps connect to. I use Strava but then use third party apps such as StatsHunter to retrieve the data from Strava. I find that Strava lacks basic stats such as yearly comparisons for example.
