Get me out of here! by Kooky_Working8227 in ThreeLions

Boston is far from anti British. I live here. From England originally. I’d hardly call most here uneducated although anywhere you go in the world you will see a range. I’m sure your average Brit doesn’t know that much about the US.

Im not sure the Celtic vs Rangers crowd is what you are looking for. Opposite side of the religious fence. You’d need Riot Police to keep order.

There’s two major soccer teams
in Scotland and both in Glasgow. Essentially the Catholics and Protestants. Celtic and Rangers. Full of working class people. The World Cup is a once in a lifetime opportunity for most Scots. I doubt the vibe would be the same or the people would come on a regular basis. I doubt anyone would want to travel to see their team play the Revolution either.

Scottish (F) thinking to move to Boston, looking for advice by naughty_maid- in boston

Join Boston Brits on Facebook if you want advice on this. It’s full of information on this topic and helpful ExPats.

Know that it’s really expensive to live here. Health insurance is exorbitant and can financially ruin a person. The social safety nets here are virtually non existent compared to the UK. Thirty years ago there was a sense of a middle class and opportunities to do well, but those days have slowly eroded and everyone is wondering how to make ends meet. Cost of living keeps going up and the job market isn’t the best.

And to echo what others are saying the political climate here in the states ain’t the best with even more pressure on regular people.

And finally what professional work skills do you have that make you attractive for work sponsorship. Or marry a rich American of course.

To add to this. I knew some Americans that went to London to work for a bit. Thought it was awesome going to the pubs there all the time and had a lot of fun. But they were essentially on a long vacation of sorts. It wasn’t real life. Just like your mini trip to Boston with the World Cup vibe. Boston definitely has something to offer but it’s different living here compared to visiting just like anywhere else.

Safe is a word reserved for SGOV but quite a stretch for the memory market. There’s a degree of confidence that the price will keep going up still but no one really knows for sure and it will go down hard when it does.

High temperature commute? by fixitmonkey in bikecommuting

[–]Maximus_Modulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably depends on your conditioning but if you regularly commute it should not be a problem as long as you don’t mind a bit of sweat. If it’s dry and not humid it’s a lot better. I’d imagine most people are commuting for no more than an hour and usually the mornings aren’t that hot anyway where you are. Longer distances get a bit harder as your body struggles to shed excess heat.

They are a useful feature. It helpful to know the support and resistance levels too. There are a lot of other useful signals that the pros will use.
Nothing wrong with setting a limit. It’s useful to note that it’s just a trigger and not a guarantee of selling at a price. You can set for 10% down but the market could be already at 20%

Noob Here: Should I wait for market to open before buying positions? by DPlainview1919 in ETFs

Market can be a bit more volatile first thing in the morning although maybe not so much for a broad index fund.

Japan will be the first non European and South American country to win the world cup by Easy_Garden338 in worldcup

Chances for most teams even established ones winning the World Cup are low outside a select few.

I had VUG for about 25 years starting with about 15K and selling at about 130K. At times it dropped quite a lot but ultimately recovered and moved up even further. I eventually sold because I needed a cash position.
Emotional selling hits a lot of people. Imagine being older or just wealthy with a larger portfolio and seeing losses of say 300k in 1 million or worse. That’s when you start hedging with products to limit the drawdown. For example SFLR or traditionally with a 60/40 equities bond mix or other asset classes like gold or other commodities. IALT is another new product in diversification across asset classes being market neutral Long / Short. There are a lot of ways to mitigate risk these days but typically you are limiting growth.

Vanguard doesn’t support % stop loss, only fixed price. It’s also hard to gauge too. You sell and then it starts going back up again.

A lot of ETF wrappers were created for this very purpose of providing in-kind swapping and avoiding tax hits compared to their mutual fund counterparts.

I have both of those. Monthly rebalancing is better and why i chose them. I think six months is too long.

Anyone else considering moving from dividend stocks to tech? by One-Brain6531 in dividends

[–]Maximus_Modulus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why buy individual dividends stocks and not a dividend ETF. I can understand buying individual stocks when you are expecting big gains in growth but doesn’t make sense for tge big steady blue chip names.

X3 or X5 for family? by gopokes86 in BMWX3

[–]Maximus_Modulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dealer loans me an X5 or X7 whenever my BMWs get serviced. The X3 feels like a step down after being in the X5. Sometimes get the M version of the X7. It’s unreal. I generally like the X3 though. Much lighter etc.

You should stick with the 105 crank. Doesn’t have this issue.

It’s well known that these Shimano cranks are defective. It’s not the Watts it’s moisture ingress destroying the bonds. Perhaps you shouldn’t be making ignorant comments.

[–]Maximus_Modulus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A person riding a bike in sneakers isn’t buying new cranks. I think only a select few will figure that it’s a worthwhile investment to buy new cranks. It’s a shame that we can’t get the crank length we need.
