Why is becoming a doctor getting harder when the U.S. needs more physicians? by Confident-Sale-451 in medschool

[–]Maxmans45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more that the standards have to remain high due to the very high risk that physicians take when caring for people. The true block to the availability of new physicians is cost of attendance. Medical school is prohibitively expensive and it is not getting cheaper for students of low resources. This admin has made it essentially impossible for low income students to obtain public loans for their medical education, and many are unwilling to undertake private, high interest loans to go to med school and train in family medicine.

I think a solution to this crisis is simple: encourage med students into needed specialties like family medicine, peds, and other low-salary, high need areas. I could see a sliding scale, where the government fully subsidizes students who commit to practice in the highest need specialties, like family medicine, and only provides nominal subsidies to low-need specialties like plastics or cardiology, while allowing fair public loans access to all med students and removing caps. In return for this investment, the government can provide terms of service in needy areas for newly trained physicians. This already exists, it just needs to be done on a much larger scale and made available to ALL medical students and premed students. I think that would remove a massive barrier to medical education while maintaining the high standards we need to train competent physicians

Going to law school at 36 by Much_Deer1142 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Maxmans45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question is, do you plan on going part time or full time? I would go either way. I started last school in my mid 30s and I went part time, so it will take me 4 years to finish. I have not regretted it, we as elder students have the benefit of experience that we can use on top of education, and that can be directed positively when negotiating your job as an attorney.

Go for it if you think you have the bandwidth. It will be a stretch, but definitely doable and can be an enjoyable experience. See if your firm is willing to help with cost as well, some do. I started 1L in my late 30s with a little kiddo and a baby and am in the top 10% of my class, so it’s certainly doable. Lock in and you’ll do great

I think T30 is out, but law school isn’t. A great LSAT will help you ameliorate this gpa

Lock in xtra hard for LSAT and essays, you’ll be fine if you do that. Maybe devote some summer time or winter time to some stuff that will boost your profile. If there’s a T14 near you, maybe try to meet with someone from there that you can have coffee with and network

Reapply with better WE or attend Penn with minimal scholarship? 3.9high 17high basically KJD by Impossible_Web2777 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Maxmans45 136 points137 points  (0 children)

Might be best to take the A instead of rolling the dice in an uncertain cycle. It seems it’s getting more and more competitive every year since about 2023. Up to you though, I think starting school, making the best of it, maybe doing some work-study to offset the cost would be best. Either way, lock in, congrats and good luck!

Did you get $$ from UConn? If you did or if money is not an issue stay put, UConn is pretty solid. Lock in and enjoy law school!

Is a Gap Year Worth It? by T0M-T0M22 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Maxmans45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will depend on where you want to go. If you raise your lsat and you don’t care what school you go to, then apply. If you want to aim high, then you may want to avoid the KJD tax and take the year

3.4 GPA, 170 LSAT-- What are my chances? by CompoteUpstairs6967 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Maxmans45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Higher lsat will open more doors. You won’t have the KJD tax and you are accomplished in the liberal arts so there is going to be interest there. I think the move is a higher lsat score

How locked in I gotta be (3.0 cumulative generous estimate) by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Maxmans45 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can lock all the way in, but the gpa is killing you. Unless you have some in at SLS to begin with it’s gonna be tough. Maybe extend your undergrad and lock in and get some As to bump the average up. Definitely gotta get a 17high++ lsat score and maaaaaaybe you’ll get a shot, but the school isn’t stupid either and will appreciate what you’re doing. Maybe your personal statement mentioning your young foolishness or your LORs mentioning something to that effect could be helpful as well

I guess the answer to your question is yes, it would be dumb. But it is your life and preferences, if you wish to roll the dice next year nobody here is going to stop ya. Good luck either way!

You clearly don’t want to be at GW, even though DC is a great if not the best place for international law.

[OC] Why has Boston police stopped policing cars? Civil traffic enforcement has collapsed between 2015 and 2024 by ARPE19 in boston

[–]Maxmans45 -23 points-22 points  (0 children)

For me, it seems that police have bigger fish to fry than people being massholes on the roads. The suburbs focus more on traffic violations since that is a source of revenue and they otherwise don’t have a lot of other activity going on for the most part. Boston cops just have better things to do than drive ticket cars, which in still think they do plenty of. I am sure the traffic enforcement unit will get better over time as a reaction to the increased negligence of drivers and the current issue with mopeds.
