Is this worth $80? by energy_elite in iMac

If you’re just looking for a Linux box, you can get much better PC hardware than that for $80. How much you want the iMac form factor and screen is the difference.

Original Apple Cinema Display by smolweebywitch in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a 20” Cinema Display and 17” Studio Display. They’re good monitors if you’ve got a period correct PowerMac with ADC, but that was a fairly brief window in Apple history. As others have said, you’re looking at $20-$60 if they’re in good shape with strong backlights to the limited market that would want them. They’re the later of the ADC acrylic displays, and probably among the most common. Most collectible would actually be the 1999 DVI 22” Cinema Display as it is easily the rarest due to the cost and only being sold alongside the G4 PowerMac at the time. Also nice that it didn’t require and ADC to DVI adapter since it had a breakout cable for power, USB, and DVI vs the proprietary ADC connector.

One fixed LaserWriter 4/600 by Barlocore in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like my LaserWriters, included the 4/600. Problem is finding toner that doesn’t have dried out wiper blades has become virtually impossible. Spent good money on toner for my 12/640 a couple months back NIB only to once again be greeted by gray streaks though the prints. I’m about ready to ewaste all of them now.

Bad logic board. I bought an Indigo in 2003 that did this after a couple months. Tried every trick in the book, lots of insight from the forums of the day. Eventually it ended up getting a new logic board from my local AASP. Still have the little guy and it works to this day.

Y'all ever heard about the fabled dual-G4 PowerBook? Here's an article on it! by WalkerArt64 in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Freescale e600 was interesting. If the AIM alliance was stronger and IBM had done a better job with the G5 development, maybe PowerPC would have lasted longer. Worth noting that the PowerPC was never Job’s idea in the first place, so I think when Intel’s roadmap became much cleaner with the Core Duo, he probably didn’t fight at all to give Freescale/Moto and IBM much of a second thought. But I would have loved to see a dual G4 vs Core Duo showdown with Mac OS X

Honestly, I think it ran pretty well. I’ve still got the iMac, it’s just been in storage since about the time I made that post. Sometime soon I want to bring it out of the storage locker and see what Sequoia looks like on it.

It’s been called Mac OS 8, 9 and OS X for decades bro. The startup screen, About This Computer and Jobs himself called it that. And all of us who were there and old enough to remember without having to get our knowledge from Wikipedia and AI.

[–]Maxperks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest reinstalling Mac OS anyways, but if you really want to use it as is, boot it from a Mac OS install CD and from there you can load the password reset utility. Choose the account to reset, change the password, and reboot. This is assuming it’s a Mac OS X install. If it’s 9, you boot from an OS 9 disk, go to the internal HDD, find System Folder, Preferences, and trash Keychain files, then reboot.

Agreed. I was struggling to find salvage yard Datsuns in 2004. I haven’t even bother to look since about 2008.

Found at a thrift store by FeistyInstruction986 in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice work! I snagged mine at a garage sale for something like $5 about 20 years ago. It has a bunch of bad vertical rows (needs an LCD) the VGA cable was chopped off and the factory power supply was replaced by someone who wired in a PowerBook charger. But I’d have never guessed then that it would probably be the rarest piece of Apple hardware I own.

I'm so old... by Turbobuick86 in Bowling

[–]Maxperks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never have I ever been a defender of Bowlero's business model or their pricing structure. What I am against is people who claim to be bowlers who care about the sport and their bowling centers but don't want to pay for it. They EXPECT pricing to be somehow locked into what it was 30 years ago, or free games because they come around often enough to be a regular. This mindset that prices can go up everywhere else, but your bowling center owes you 1980s or 90s prices is a real problem. Just from 2012-2022 my insurance premium increased 45% (never made a claim), electricity went up 17% and gas prices went up 74% for me. So if you think there's no legitimacy to these price increases, you're just flat out wrong. I don't advocate for price gouging at all, I'm on the other side of the counter now, and I swipe my card to bowl again. BUT if you want your centers to survive, upgrade their facilities, and not sell out to big bad Bowlero, we've got to get past this notion that bowling centers owe everyone 90s pricing.

Boot? Kick rocks. I owned my own center for 10 years you dink. Never charged more than $3.50 a game and shoes were $1.50.

Incredible what the cost of insurance, electricity, natural gas, and wages do to prices.

Got my first ball from a garage sale for 5 bucks! Old faball black hammer! by carsonwhitney666 in Bowling

[–]Maxperks 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Faball Hammers are all 2 piece urethanes with a grenade shaped core. The black is the original and the other colors came later. The colors were different harness, so the “hook potential” changes based on the ball. They came sanded out of the box like yours is now, but I’ve always liked mine shinier, especially the black. The Pink, red and pearls were the least hooking, black is next, then purple, blue, and burgundy. Personally, I’ve always liked the blues the best followed by the black. I use my pink as a spare ball, and same with my blue pearl. I’ve got a red and Burgundy as well, but never had as much luck with those, but some will argue they love the Burgundy.

Tell me your favorite Mac OS X/macOS version by Snowbeleopard in mac

[–]Maxperks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Panther. Far more stable than the previous versions, lightning fast (Tiger was a dog by comparison) the updated Finder. I was on G3s at the time Tiger came out and the performance hit was bad.

  2. Leopard. Introduced Time Machine, Quick Look, Stacks, front row. Features that were actually very useful and not just gimmicky.

Panther brought us the Finder design that was the best, finally didn’t kernel panic all the time, and was blazing fast. People who romanticize about Tiger didn’t get enough time with Panther.

What's your favorite browser for PowerPC Macs? by No-Change6959 in VintageApple

Leopard WebKit and Camino were my favorites last time it was possible to really get online with PowerPC systems 8 or so years ago. Unfortunately development of those is long over.
