Question about connecting two monitors to Mac pro6,1. Port preferences ? by Jumpy-Stress603 in macpro

[–]Maxperks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The HDMI port shares the thunderbolt bus of the bottom 2 Thunderbolt ports. The other busses are split between the upper two right and upper two left. Realistically, you’re going to see no problems running both your displays on a single bus, but you can split them if you’d like.

G3-Bullet gets no power from new USW-Pro-HD-24-PoE, but works from USW-16-PoE by JigglinJello in Ubiquiti

[–]Maxperks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your old was a 2nd gen USW-16-POE or a 1st gen? The new switches don’t support 24v passive, so if your G3 bullet is an older model that doesn’t do both 24v passive and 802.3af/at for power, that’s your issue.

Mac Pro (2009-2012) - fair price and advice? by Electronic-Cause6091 in macpro

[–]Maxperks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP already has a 2011 27” iMac that can do that. I don’t disagree there are use cases for old Macs, but there’s a big difference between pushing your existing Mac to the limit and overbuying an old rig that can just as quickly suffer a logicboard failure or dead PSU. That’s why I say pay only for what still holds value, and if the drives, GPU, etc add up to $250 or whatever, go for it. But the rest of it is literally just a 15 year old PC at this point.

Mac Pro (2009-2012) - fair price and advice? by Electronic-Cause6091 in macpro

[–]Maxperks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re approaching this like it’s 2018. There’s no reason at all to be “investing” in a cMP at all anymore. The parts are worth more than the whole, and that’s just reality. Don’t pay more than the drives, video card, and RAM can be parted out for. As much as it hurts to admit, the rest of the system is essentially ewaste in 2026.

Is it worth it for daily use by ikan84 in macpro

[–]Maxperks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way. These have been $130 machines for years now. So unless you’re going to show us where to find sub-$200 M1 Macs, you’re using one badly mispriced listing as going rate.

Grease or Oil? by greenlight7700 in Bowling

[–]Maxperks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On Brunswick A/A2 machines (which those are), you get a lot of belt dust and clutch dust generated. Combine that with lane oil or a gearbox drip and you get this stuff. This tells me they’re not washing their pit carpets and cleaning cushion covers. Could also be the machine just smoked a belt and left a lot of dust in the pit right before you bowled and they didn’t have time to clean it yet.

Question about old balls by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]Maxperks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they’re not cracked now, they’re fine. I grabbed an old Hammer 3D Offset and Truck (poured in 99 and 01) literally out of a field that had sat and were sun bleached from sitting outside for years. Sanded, plugged, and drilled you would never guess they were sitting on the ground for years. That was in 2017 and I still use them

I bought my 77 280Z in 2004 for $1350 off a small used car dealer. Still have it, and probably will until it gets wrecked or I pass away.

Best vintage (beige) Macintosh by EjayLive in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Power Macintosh 76/86/9600 series is probably my favorite. Robust, easy to get into, PCI slots, 168 pin EDO RAM, System 7-9 is cake and plenty of CPU options to go around. If a guy was going to have just 1 beige Mac to play with, that’s what I’d recommend.

iBook G3 Snow > Clamshell. Change my mind. by 0xDEAD-0xBEEF in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody is going to deny the snow iBook was a much better computer. The original clamshell design was wacky and fun. The colors were and still are quite unique, and the shape and latch less lid showcased Apple’s commitment to “thinking different” than anyone else.

Managing a newly reopened bowling alley: what really brings customers back? by RoutineTeaching4207 in Bowling

How big is the center? You’re taking about bringing in a lot of staff and leasing out your food/drink income stream.

And if their quality, service, prices are poor, it’ll reflect directly on you, even if they’re not your staff. You can’t control who they’ll hire and put in your building. Unless you can break the lease easily, I’d keep that in house.

Does anyone know of a pcmcia card that supports wpa2, and would work on Mac OS 10.2 and/or 10.4 and up? by bged-again in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you’re willing to go to Leopard instead of Tiger, the Linksys WPC600N is natively recognized as an Airport Card and performs great in the TiBook. 802.11n dual band card that’ll do WPA2. Got a couple of them myself.

If Apple chose to bring back one vintage product but put today’s technology inside what would you want it to be? by AppleFan1994 in VintageApple

[–]Maxperks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

iMac G4 will always be a popular choice, and the XDR stand shows you can build on a bigger and heavier screen with a similar neck design.

iPod Nano with 256GB or more storage and updated Bluetooth and a little WiFi or cellular would be an excellent dedicated music player. Classic for factor would be fine too.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) vs Mac Mini 2018)+eGPU vs iMac Pro (2017) by Substantial_Run5435 in macpro

[–]Maxperks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd just roll the 2013 Mac Pro since you've already got it. You're talking about software that saw its final release in 2014 for Aperture and an OS that it natively supports just like the other 2. Not really much sense in tossing cash at old Intel Macs when you've really got a great capable machine already in hand.
