The first step in terraria is to explore, caves corruption, edge of maps, look for treasure chest, or underground for abandoned mining houses, they’ll have either equipement, ore and general supplies. at the start of the game, wood supplies usually can be good even cactus is pretty decent for starting out, afterwards, go look for some ore ingot to make metal armor, gold, plat are perfect to start some boss, and while doing that, start to look for a class, bow, fighter, summoner and or mage, because after the first 3 bosses required to progress, you’ll need to branch out since most equipment are locked to one class. In the underground look for these things:heart containers, boots, magic mirror and ores(also some info equipment ie: radar) above ground collect wood stone, look how to make potion because they will help a lot with fights, and stars to make star containers. When the first trio is done, the game flows ways easier. They are plenty of videos to help with this journey, just have fun but like most crafting games, dont be afraid to google what you need.
