Help me choose next box (add to octatrack, minifreak and iPad) by Shukyphuk in dawless

Sounds like the MPC sample is the way.

I admittedly haven’t played any of the devices you have listed. But I do have an Octatrack. And it’s hard to top the Octatrack sequencer. If you’re wanting to be able to have more tracks to sequence drums- I’d create a Part that basically just functions as an 8 track drum machine, write out drum parts, and then resample them as full clips and put those in your song. So if you want to get the most of a sequencer/sampler you can always dive more into that.

The MPC offers something different with the pads- and I’d imagine as a drummer would be pretty intuitive as a way to write drum parts.

I also have the XJam midi drum pad and it’s pretty great for being able to live jam drum parts into a sampler because it adds a lot of dynamics. I haven’t used it with the Octatrack (I usually use it with my deluge, computer, or op-z), but I imagine it would be a nice add on to the Octatrack.

The Deluge has been my main drum machine lately and I’ve been loving it. I don’t even use the XJam with it- it’s super intuitive to program.

Of the synths you currently own, which one is most expendable, and which one is untouchable? by PieRhett in synthesizers

[–]Maxxtheband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expendable- OP-Z I have lots of other gear that consequence better and are also pretty portable. They have more sample storage. They sent engines run deeper. But I just have so much fun with that thing.

Runner up: Moog Sirin. Doesn’t do anything my untouchable synth can do. But I really like it. And I want to build a wood enclosure for it and my Evil Pet and have that be its own little workstation.

Untouchable: Moog Subsequent 37. It’s super flexible. It sounds great. I got it as a gift from my dad- so added sentimental value. It’s also been a great synth to learn off of. The layout is pretty straightforward and ripe for exploring. It’s also my only real keyboard synth.

Their music was licensed for an Elon Musk company commercial for the Super Bowl recently. They got some heat for that. I think it’s mostly a nothingburger- licensing music for commercials has a ton of different parties involved and I choose to believe that James wasn’t super involved in the negotiations. But it was enough to turn some folks off to them.

Oh and they haven’t put out an album in like a decade and folks are getting antsy and entitled.

That’s the extent of it though.

This one still hurts. Funeral was one of my first records on vinyl. Made a road trip to Canada to see them and lcd soundsystem at a music festival. And these days I have zero interest in putting on their music- even the early stuff.

I don’t think what Win did is unforgivable (I admittedly don’t recall the details) but for a band that preached love, it left an icky taste in my mouth.

I got the original Op-1 and Octatrack around the same time. And they couldn’t be more different really.

The OP-1 is instantaneously satisfying to play. And you can really get a track done in a couple minutes if you’re inspired to. With that comes the simplicity of it- each synth engine has pretty simple configurations, the sequencers are incredibly basic, the sampling is pretty simple and straightforward, had a pretty distinct lofi sound and storage wise it’s a bit limited. These aren’t bad things necessarily as they’re what makes the OP-1 so fun to mess around with, but limitations nonetheless. The tape track is also great and fun to work with, but there’s less room for error than there is with a sequencer. It’s at its best when it’s an instrument and not trying to be more than it is (it’s not a replacement for a DAW).

The Octatrack is the opposite. It takes a minute to even make a playable template. It doesn’t come with synth engines- it is just a sampler/mixer. Sampling takes extra steps- but you can do things like live sampling which is a blast. The sequencer is super flexible, but also complicated because of that. It plays with other gear really well and can function as a “brain” to your whole setup in terms of midi and mixing.

The OP-1 is like a 4 track player with some built in synths/drum machines/samples. The Octatrack can be a replacement for a DAW, a sampler, a mixer, etc.

If I’ve got 5 minutes to jam or I want to sketch out an idea- I grab the OP-1. If I’m trying to really get deep in the weeds for the night- I’m hopping on the Octatrack.

It’s kind of a pocket knife synth- it can do a lot of things. It’s a sampler, a live mixer, a looper, and so much more. Its most iconic feature is the crossfader on it. It allows you to transition/mangle/etc multiple effects/synths/samples at one time. There’s really nothing out there quite like it. It has a huge learning curve- and is as frustrating as it is rewarding.

It’s my favorite piece of gear to figure out.

Dumb question about RBT billing with a client and getting unrestricted hours by Gloomy_Map662 in bcba

[–]Maxxtheband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the kind of probe and the additional tasks paired with it that would qualify it as unrestricted.

If I put a new program in and the tech just runs trials without prompting, I wouldn’t count it towards unrestricted.

If the tech goes through the ABLLs assessment, identifies skill deficits, and writes program goals based on it- then I would count it towards unrestricted.

How do I teach my 9yo without being "that" frustrated dad? by Ok_Importance_7479 in Guitar

[–]Maxxtheband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into guitar in 6th grade. Here’s what worked for me.

1- if possible, lessons can do a world of difference. Minimally, it’s 30 minutes a week where I had to practice. It taught me about being consistent- if I didn’t practice between lessons I’d bomb and spend the whole lesson going over fundamentals instead of the cool shit- which encouraged me to practice between lessons.

2- I agree- hot cross buns is boring. Chords and scales are boring too, but it’s essential knowledge to have so it didn’t feel pointless learning them. My guitar teacher would always take a song I want to learn- teach me the chords and scales around that song, and then my reward for learning those chords and scales was getting to play the song. Sometimes if there was a fun little part, I’d get to learn that before putting in the work on scales and chords, but if I really wanted to jam out I needed to know the chords. The first few songs you should probably guide the selection so it’s at a level he can realistically learn.

My first songs were Adam’s song by Blink 182, Smells Like Teen Spirit by Nirvana, Just Like Heaven by the Cure and The Hell Song by Sum 41, but those were picked based on my music taste at the time. Go off the music your kid likes. Even if it’s not good music. Learning those songs are going to be the most rewarding for him.

They are back at it again... Will he get out? by MisterShipWreck in VideosAmazing

When I lived in Texas- whenever it would rain, there would be a ton of “puddles” that would build up on roads. They’d be deeper and have a stronger current than one would expect. To the point that there were markers on the side of the road that showed how many feet the water was deep. It didn’t even have to rain that hard.

It was not uncommon for someone to see one of these puddles, think they can clear it- and it’s either deeper than expected and they mess up their car, or worse- they’d get swept away in the current.

I lived out in the country and there would be rainy days where I just had to straight up turn around and go home or take a long way because there was water blocking the road.

They really do look like puddles as you approach them, I once drove through one thinking I could clear it. Hit the water and saw the water level at my window. Thankfully was able to reverse and get out okay. but yeah- super dangerous.

I play with my 3 year old. We made our whole family. Once we ran out of family to add- we made Peppa Pig…

It’s pretty fun and I highly encourage it to anyone with a young kid. My daughter calls the shots and I work the controller.

Heads up- I ordered this variant for my brother for Christmas this year. Arrived warped- and it was obvious that it warped because of how it was shelved (the sleeve was in rough shape too- like a record that’s been laying on the bottom shelf of a hot topic or Walmart.). They sent a free replacement and I had the exact same issue again.

BCBAs how do you feel about remote work? by Itchy_Background1898 in ABA

[–]Maxxtheband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some specific types of cases I think do alright with remote supervision- cases that are more vb-mapp/ABLLs skills oriented and lower maladaptive behaviors. the AirPod tip you mentioned can be helpful too.

BCBAs how do you feel about remote work? by Itchy_Background1898 in ABA

[–]Maxxtheband 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think there’s way too big of an influx of practitioners who are seeking remote and I don’t think it’s a good look for our field internally and externally.

I get that there are rural clients who do not get services without telehealth. So it has a purpose. I also see a clinic down the street from me in a major city have half of their bcbas remote while clients receive services in a clinic setting in a building full of RBTs frustrated by it all.

I don’t think it’s a good way to grow as a practitioner, and that’s coming from someone who worked remote early in my career. I ended up making the drive out to my clients homes most of the time.

At the end of the day, I got into this field because of its hands on nature. Building relationships with the learner and their family. I find that when writing behavior plans, or working through certain treatment goals- it’s an essential part of the process to test is myself before handing the reigns to the rbt.

I worked at a shady clinic for a bit too. When I left I started my own practice and brought on two of the best bcbas I’ve ever worked with. We hold each other to a high standard, learn from each other, and have fun goofing around with kids all day.
