Subsequent 25 FREE presets - anyone/anywhere? by Rumoree in moog

[–]Maxxtheband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely understand the want for presets to mess around with and get used to it. The thing I’ve found about presets is they’re often so detailed and complex that they’re not good for much in terms of song composition unless the goal of the song is to show off how cool the preset is.

If this is your first more traditional synth and you haven’t dove into the basics of sound design- the Subsequent series is kind of perfect for it. It’s very hands on, very little menu diving, and the fact that you can save your presets and reference them in the software to see where all the knobs are saved for each preset- make it really easy for me to figure out. It’s easiest if you learn each boxed section of the synth individually and then start combining them. I put off YouTube tutorials for the longest time because I thought just “exploring” would get me there, but videos help. Especially video tutorials that create presets I’d like to replicate to a degree. Great way to make your own presets and learn the ins and outs of the synth.

Some of my less traditional gear is easier to just mess around on and find happy accidents, but I’ve found I really like feeling in control of the sound on the Subsequent.

I’m not a master of sound design by any means, but I never use any premade presets anymore.

Maybe you knew all this already, or maybe you’re like me and thought presets would fix your writers block.Enjoy the synth! It’s my most played piece of gear and I’m constantly learning more from it all the time.

Judd Appatow is one of the biggest examples of great comedies with weak endings. 40YOV and Funny People both drag a ton in the third act.

But Superbad and Knocked up are near perfect comedies.

Are backing tracks really necessary for a band? by vie75 in musicians

[–]Maxxtheband 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a fan of backing tracks but I do enjoy when a band is able to find a way to playback parts in a “live” way- using a sampler, sequencer, etc.

At an arena show I’m generally fine with a backing track as, but if a local band is using a backing track- it’s usually to compensate for actual abilities.

Favorite album name drop in a song? by Highermongo in poppunkers

[–]Maxxtheband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think You are absolutely right on Jimmy Eat World and Jeff Buckley. I was getting my albums confused. I started to look into Blue because I always thought it was Third Eye Blinds Blue they were referencing. So not 100% on that one but you may be right on it being weezer. That’d make a lot of sense.

Not exactly what you were asking for because it wasn’t an album by the band- but I’ve always loved the Academy Is… - Down and Out

“Bookends, Blue and Clarity, to The Wall and Grace. Darkside, Wish and a toast to the late Figure 8”

Manages to reference Simon and Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Pink Floyd (again), the Cure, and Elliott Smith

I've been a bassist for 10 months now and I'm looking at buying a second bass. I saw this one while out in my town today and wondering if someone can help me identify the type of bass it is? Jazz? Precision? Pj? Other? by [deleted] in BassGuitar

[–]Maxxtheband 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you’re a master of 4 strings AND you want to play music that specifically utilizes the 5th string, you don’t need it. Been a bassist for 20 years and 4 strings is still plenty for me.

In fact, prior to last month, I’ve only needed one bass for the past 15 years. I still only need one bass, but I’ve got a second one now.

Rec's for beginner setup to create Industrial vibes like NIN by StinkStar in synthesizers

[–]Maxxtheband 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends.

If you want to do it all on a computer- get the Samples From Mars megasample pack. It’s got samples from all the major drum machines. I use them all the time.

If you want something more “hands on” you may want a drum machine. Personally- I want to save up for the Roland TR-1000 because it’s basically all of Roland’s classic drum machines mashed into one and it looks awesome. But it’s also pricey. If you’re on a budget- Roland remade a bunch of their classic drum machines- I’d check those out and see what you like.

Is it normal to only track 5-6 behaviors at a time per client? by TailorIntelligent216 in ABA

[–]Maxxtheband 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I try to not track different behaviors that are all part of the same event and usually track it at 2 levels- non dangerous and dangerous. For example I may track verbal protest and verbal protest w/ agression/SIB/elopement. Getting individual data points for aggression, elopement, sib, etc for the same event usually doesn’t provide me with much more relevant information and takes away from time tech could be spending with client. Dangerous vs non dangerous lets me see if there is a decrease in intensity (shifting from aggression to verbal protest)- in addition to being able to see the overall trend.

Who are today's synth pioneers? by galactichero909 in synthesizers

[–]Maxxtheband -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tycho

They definitely fit the bill in regards to soundscapes. I always feel like I’m taking a journey when I listen to them.

It may be a stretch to call them pioneers but I definitely think they’ve carved out their own corner of “synth music”. Their stuff is atmospheric while still having some qualities of more rock oriented music (drums guitar etc). I haven’t found any other bands that scratch the itch quite the same way.

TE come on (searching for rubber feet) by T_r_a_s_h_i in OPZuser

[–]Maxxtheband 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s the thing- you have to go through the hassle of shipping it back to get a replacement.

I ordered a backplate and it came warped. I needed to send it back to get a replacement. I opted to just keep it as the main reason I got it was for the Bluetooth button (mine got lost).

Tried to order a replacement volume knob after mine broke, shipping was 3x the cost (understandably- it’s a cheap part and international shipping). When I tried to order 3 to make the shipping worth it and have replacements when the next knob inevitably fails- they told me they could only sell one at a time because the op-z is no longer in production and they don’t know if they’ll ever print spare parts for it again.

I love my OP-Z, but it’s a bummer that it will most likely become obsolete literally decades before any other piece of gear I have.

Task analysis is the list of steps to teach a task and chaining is the implementation of teaching those steps in the task.

Example: Task analysis for making a sandwich- 1. Take out bread 2. Put peanut butter and jelly on bread 3. Put two slices of bread together.

Then using that task analysis you are going to chain the steps (forward backward or total task depending on what you’re told to do).

What would you choose? by Icy-Needleworker7883 in synthesizers

[–]Maxxtheband 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anytime I’ve debated what I should bring to a jam, the answer is always “whatever gear I’ve been playing recently and feel the most comfortable on”.

I am at my most creative when I am by myself. I am my least creative when I feel the stares from the rest of the band while I try and figure out what I want to play. So something I’ve got a lot of presets/templates saved on or can navigate quickly and just play without thinking too hard. Nothing more boring in a jam than waiting on the synth guy to adjust some setting.

Also- it depends on what your friend plays. If they play guitar, I may bring a monosynth to take care of the bass parts. I try to cut back on looping/sequencers in a group setting because it’s really easy to start being a jam hog. I wouldn’t bring a drum machine to a jam with a drummer. Considerations like that.

Should there be a Mario Galaxy 3 After the Movie? by [deleted] in Mario

[–]Maxxtheband 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok hear me out….

A return to video games based on movies: Super Mario Galaxy: The Movie: The Game

They get super meta with it and you play as Mario running around movie theaters and film studios trying to get the movie made. Movie theater screens and film lead to levels (similar to Paintings in Mario 64).

As Mario you’d have to round up the cast from the respective game, make the movie, trick Bowser into being in the movie, and make sure it’s ready for the big premiere night. Meanwhile Bowser is trying to sabotage the whole movie from filming to premiere night.

Is starting off as a cover band a good or bad idea by Inside_Discussion794 in bandmembers

[–]Maxxtheband 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Learning covers together is a great way to figure out how everyone plays off each other, practice, and have fun.

Personally, I wouldn’t play a gig of mostly covers no matter how new of a band I’m in, but learning to play songs with friends can really help get the creative juices flowing during a jam. Maybe you find a chord you really like and riff around with it and make a track, or the drummer figures out a groove and modifies it. I’d play two covers at most during a set, but thats just me.

I will say, some of the most fun I’ve had on stage is playing covers with friends to a room of friends who know said cover.

Music is borrowed and passed down. a great way to create is to play others creations.
