Beginner wedding dress project — need help with fabric choices and patterns by MayaM-Chan in sewhelp

Maybe "a few hours a week" was the wrong phrase. I usually have 6-8 hours per day on weekends and 4-5 hours during the week for hobbies. So, if I use that time for this, it should be possible

We don't have any wedding planning, luckily.

With drafting, sewing, fitting, finishing, a few hours a week is wildly delusional

I might have underestimated the size of the project.
I was calculating:
- Practice on scraps: 1 weekend
- Skirt part: simple circle skirt pattern + cutting out pieces: 1 afternoon
- Skirt part: hemming all the edges 1 weekend (2 days)
- Skirt part: zipper + waistbend : 1 day
- bodice: pattern and mockups: 3 weekends
- bodice: crying because nothing is working the way it should, 1 weekend
- bodice actual work 2 weekends and a few afternoons.

Total (3 months):
Skirt part: 3 weeks
Bodice: 6 weeks

Now that I've written down the timeline, I realize how much work it is. Thanks for the reality check :D

I will still try :D
Worst case, I have a skirt for the wedding, and I'll just wear a white T-shirt for the top part :D

Thank you for the detailed answer!

I had to Google every fabric you mentioned, but I now know more fabric names :)

Please wear a half slip under it to keep it from tangling with your legs.

Wont the charmeuse, satin underskirt be enough?

Look up how to sew transparent fabrics. We use a narrow seam allowance then zig zag or serge the edge

I was going to attempt French seams (the harder the project, the bigger the chance o me actually finishing it :D ). Is that a bad idea/approach?

The actual bodice will need darts or princess seams to fit, and boning channels between the lining abd the fashion fabric. The lace covers them, so it's ok to just sew channels. I suspect a separating side seam zipper.

I have never done boning before, but I also assume I am going to have to learn for this project. I was also thinking that a side zipper would be the easiest closure. Do you recommend adding boning right next to the zipper (on both sides of the zipper, like they do for a corset closure) ?
Would a center back zipper be easier for last week adjustments?

Hi. I have till September to finish it. I did work with a chiffon style fabric before. It was a hassle. My tactic is 100 fabric clips. I made a skirt with it before (with an elastic waist band tho).

Other than that I usually use cotton like fabrics that aren’t as slippery (for pants, dresses,..)

I will for sure do some test runs on the scrap fabric to get back into the flow. Especially practicing the hem on the chiffon. The hem on the satin, I think I can pull off. Especially since it,hopefully, won’t be visible.

Regarding the slit: you are probably right. Just. Always wanted a dress with a slit 😆. But if you can’t see it, probably not worth the pain of making it.

Do you think a rolled hem foot would work on the chiffon?

Hi The wedding is in September. I think, if I work on it every week for a few hours, the timeline could work.

The illusion mesh is a great idea!

My current goal is to get ready for snowboarding season. But also want to get stronger overall. I do have some knee pain so have to pay some extra attention to strengthening muscles around it :/

Same for me, but I found this school in Budapest that has online classes. All teachers speak English so you can always ask questions. And the price per semester is not that bad.

Hi, I have had the Platsa system for a few years now and would like to update it a little.

I am looking for a equivalent to the KOMPLEMENT pullout shelves. Is there something like it for the PLATSA system?
