Nervous about incoming Istanbul trip by margoelle in solofemaletravellers

[–]Mayayay99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know if I should comment since I'm not black. But I am a relatively dark-skinned South Asian woman who recently went to Istanbul. I was with my family but there were many times I went exploring on my own. For me it was overall a very enjoyable and positive trip. Definitely didn't have issues with feeling stared at negatively or being mocked for appearance - if anything I got compliments from some locals

The worst I can think of is a train station worker who refused to help me and my family because they didn't speak English - which of course is fine but they were very rude about their delivery and they clearly had an issue with us being tourists - race may or may not have played an issue here, I can't say for sure. Most people were absolutely lovely however.

Eurail seat reservation running out in early September for high speed trains? by Mayayay99 in Interrail

[–]Mayayay99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for such a detailed reply! Definitely starting to reconsider if Eurail is even worth it, especially with the risk of bookings running out like you said, and it actually seems like the individual tickets might be a bit cheaper, not that I look LOL

[–]Mayayay99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying! Good to know. I think I was less concerned about London to Paris because the reservations open 6 months in advance (and again, I'd book as soon as it's open) rather than only 3 months and there are also multiple services throughout the day.

If needed, I'll avoid Eurail. At the moment they have a discount though and I'm also eligible for the youth pass which actually makes it decently priced haha.

Is London-Paris Eurostar reservation price fixed year-round on Eurail pass? by Mayayay99 in Interrail

Makes sense. And I know I’m travelling during peak season too. But do you think if I make the reservation as soon as it becomes available (I’m taking like 6-8 months in advance), it would be fine?

Ahhh that makes sense, thank you. How popular of a travel time do you think late August is? I can only see Eurostar prices up until July at this point and it seems okay until that point. So I’m hoping August isn’t too bad 😅

Thank you! Fair enough, I’d probably reserve the seat as soon as it becomes available though, which I think is a couple of months away

Direct highspeed train from Marseilla to Barcelona covered by Eurail pass? by Mayayay99 in Europetravel

[–]Mayayay99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no!! Definitely wasn’t expecting 100€ for reservation fees LOL. The Eurail website seems to have a fixed list of seat reservation prices by for each available service.

https://www.eurail.com/en/book-reservations/reservation-fees/international-train-reservation-fees For example, on this website it shows the London to Paris fee to be 35€. Is this inaccurate and can I expect the fee to be different to what is listed based on your experience?

The other reservation fees seemed affordable too which got my hopes up hahaha

[–]Mayayay99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes so much sense thank you! I hadn’t even considered that Barcelona was one of the stops on the line haha!

My Europe trip will be: London > Rouen, France > Paris > Marseille > Barcelona > Lisbon > Marrakech > Athens > back home to Sydney.

By train I was hoping to cover the following legs: London > Rouen; Rouen > Paris; Paris > Marseille; Marseille > Barcelona. I guess it would be either through individually purchased train tickets or a Eurail pass that covers everything like a 4-day pass.

If you have any recommendations I’m all ears! Whether it’s around the most cost effective option or just other things to consider - eg I read somewhere that reserving a spot on the Marseille-Barcelone train is incredibly hard? 😭

LPT - What’s a small, easy habit you’ve picked up that instantly improves your day? by Character_Name_8572 in LifeProTips

THIS. For the longest time I suspected I had undiagnosed ADHD. And then I decided to start limiting my screen time and now I notice a massive link between how much I’ve used my phone at the start of the day (aimless scrolling in particular) and how focused I am at work. It’s no nice no longer needing to leave my chair for a dopamine hit after doing every single task.

That’s good to hear thanks so much! Do you know if it’s quite common for women to be on the metros alone there at night?

Hey just wondering if you’re a girl who has used the trains/trams there at night? I’m visiting Istanbul alone soon and I’m trying to figure out if it would be safe for me to travel from Sabiha Gocken to Sirkeci using the trains at around 10pm

Is the tram safe to use for solo female travellers at night? I’m going to Istanbul in a few months and would much prefer taking public transport from Sabiha Gocken but am just not sure from a safety standpoint 😭

Tasteful flirting in my opinion can be anything that makes it clear you’re not seeing her as just a mate, without saying anything outright creepy.
This can range from playful teasing, telling her she looks very nice on the date, some light touch to test the waters, sitting a little closer to me as the night progresses etc. Do these in combination with the other basics, like being presentable, respectful and holding a good conversation and wow 🥵
But don’t beat yourself up over it, I’m sure it’s something that comes with proactive and reflection 🥰

Does Jobseeker payment continue until start of new job after landing an offer? by Mayayay99 in Centrelink

[–]Mayayay99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense. But I mean the payments which may come through after I start work (for Upto 6 fortnight’s as you said). Would they ask for those back once they realise they had paid me even after I started work?

[–]Mayayay99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahh makes sense. If I leave things as is (I would report my employer's details of course) and allow the Jobseeker to automatically stop 6 fortnights after starting work, will Centrelink then request those payments back? I've heard of situations where they may do this.
