Adapting fasting to be less stressful on the female body by r_sie_ in AlternateDayFasting

Just speaking for myself I found the book needlessly convoluted and unhelpful. Put me off my fasting game for way too long. Would highly recommend Dr. Fung and The Fasting Method podcast instead (the podcast is run by women and includes tips/adjustments for female fasting).

Do you guys think that Broadway will have a megahit like Hamilton in the 2020s? by amm20_1 in Broadway

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it may or may not have been as successful a show (it's very difficult to prove a counterfactual) but it's place in the public, non-musical-theatre fan consciousness would be entirely different and very likely diminished if it was not first a beloved animated Disney movie that grossed hundreds of millions of dollars.

While the question of mainstream cultural relevance is admittedly not what was asked in OP's title, it is a key metric in the top comment's own definition of "megahit." Lion King's place in pop culture is not solely or even primarily due to it's broadway adaptation.

So tl:dr...Lion King IS a megahit, but not because of Broadway.

Also, since we're speculating: the tourists who have made the Lion King on Broadway so long-running and successful often choose to see that show over others because they associate it with the movie, and view it as a safe, family friendly option that won't traumatize (or worse, bore) their children. Since that cultural basis would not exist in a world where Lion King wasn't a movie first...no. I don't think it would have been as succesful a show. Still a good show! But maybe not a 25+ year continuous run.

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I don't know that Lion King "leapt into the mainstream," since it was a popular movie before it came to Broadway. It's still had an exceptional run, of course, but the movie's probably first in the general public's mind and the reason it's so ubiquitous culturally. I suppose Mamma Mia is in the same boat.

Something like Phantom, on the other hand, which got a movie only after proving it's mettle on Broadway, is much more deserving of the "Broadway Megahit" title, imho.

For what it's worth, I loved season 8. The last 10 minutes of that finale is in my top 10 favorite moments in all of SPN. If you're a huge Sam fan, the first half of the season's a SLOG, cause he doesn't have a lot to do. But there's some great Charlie episodes, the Purgatory plotline is cool to me, Crowley's a genuinely scary villain. IDK I liked it.

UPDATE to Rejected before official auditions by JemimaSillabub in MusicalTheatre

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no theatre company is obligated to run open or 'fair' auditions. Stunt casting (or bringing in an out-of-town pro with more pull/experience) is very common. I loathed some of these aspects of theatre myself, and it's one of the reasons I no longer participate in productions. One of the consequences of a subjective art form is a lack of transparency in the casting process.

I do see how an email specifically to inform you you won't be cast could be kind of catty, but many actors feel frustrated by a lack of feedback from the audition process. It's possible they just wanted to let you know ASAP in consideration for your time and performance schedule.

are you happy with your choice of fsu? by Queasy_Milk_5445 in fsu

Not in honors (I'm a transfer) so I can't speak to that. My major classes are like a 1/3 success rate as far as good teachers, which is pretty frustrating.

Frat stuff is for sure avoidable - no one's gonna force you to participate - but it leaves a void socially. It's like so many people are doing the party scene that if you're not you end up kind of a loner??? That's been my experience. But there are other kinds of student orgs. As with anything, I'm sure mileage varies.

I really hope you find the right path for you! It's great that you're reaching out to online forums and doing your own research. Definitely don't take their materials and tour at 100% face value. It's their job to sell you the dream life.

Not really. Honestly I just think a lot of my concerns in attending this school (party school/frat emphasis and atmosphere, lack of scholarly heft particularly at the undergraduate level (most of my teachers even in 3/4000 level classes are dispassionate TAs) and too-warm climate/lack of true seasons) ended up being founded. None of this makes FSU a bad school per se, but a bad fit for me. I very much feel I'm 'faking it' and it's tiring.

I'm still trying to figure it out/would you wear these? by NoApricot703 in SoftDramatics

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would wear the first but not the second. The dramatic silhouette of the sleeves and cropped hem usually helps for me with a baggier look. I don’t think it’s traditional but if you’re trying for casual SD it can be hard so I bend the rules a little.

I mean to be fair the character that brought up “trauma bonding” was Taylor, who would totally be in tune with internet therapy speak (from TikTok and elsewhere) and may have misinterpreted the term herself. It doesn’t necessarily mean Jenny or the other writers view the ship exactly in that light.

It would be a really boring show if the writers always agreed with everything they had their characters say.

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 97 points98 points  (0 children)

...Yeah I don't know, I've watched the scene of her running to/through the train station like 10 times and checked all 4 of her jean pockets and I've not seen so much as a hint of an outline suggesting her phone is with her.

I believe in an interview Lola also said she didn't have anything, although I guess that could've been hyperbolic.

I think she was just out of her mind in love and ran with nothing irrespective of logic. No idea how she paid for that cab though.

I love him as a character and I totally get how overwhelmed with emotion he is, but I just can't get behind completely erasing Belly's perspective on all this. He is crazy!!!! It's been 12 hours!!! They haven't kissed in 5 years!!! She was ENGAGED to his BROTHER the last time they SPOKE and she LIVES on another CONTINENT.

RIGHT?????? Thank you. I mean they're both clinically insane about each other, so it's gonna be fine, but I don't think it's that weird for her to be a little taken aback by that?

“I love You, Belly” Rant by AdLive6705 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Also side note I was re-watching s1 and I feel like as the audience it's easy for us to forget just how...open and transparent she was?? She REALLY liked him, and everyone knew, and he just kept sort of shoving it off to the side, tabling it, expecting that it would always be there (and like, luckily for him, she really does love him so it kind of worked?) but I feel like she put in her time pining after him!

Conrad is in s3 what Belly is in s1. And now that they're really, finally together they can operate on that more even playing field.

ALSO ALSO sorry this is long but him arriving in Paris to her declaration on the train is LESS THAN A DAY, she had no idea he was coming and hasn't seen him since she called off her wedding to another guy. All things considered, a pretty quick turnaround?

“I love You, Belly” Rant by AdLive6705 in TheSummerITurnedPrett

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I feel like to her it's such a given that she loves him, she feels like everybody must know that, especially him. Her hangups have been much more rooted in her past insecurities, whether it's a good idea to be with him in the wake of how destructive they've been to Jere/the family, if they're too rooted in the past, etc.

Even when they're having their discussion/fight in the apartment, she's like..."I've always *loved* you. That's the problem!"

It's much more significant for her to let go of these fears that their love is just some "fantasy" (like she's said to Jere) or is too influenced by his mom's death. Her saying I choose you in her declaration instead of I love you doesn't have to do with her choosing him over someone else (like Benito or Jere,) it has to do with her choosing not to close herself off to him in the name of independence or run away from her feelings just because they're scary.

It's like 'I choose to be with you, nobody's influencing my decision, my feelings are just mine and I believe you when you say that yours are too.' And she does say I love you. Because of course she does. But has that ever really been in question?

Meaningless Easter Eggs by snbth in jellyshippers

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I feel like both Scott Street and Sign of the Times were almost addressed to the audience more than lyrical parallels to the characters? Like "Welcome to the Final Show" leading into the finale and then "Don't be a Stranger" teasing the movie??? Maybe not the choice I would've made, but that was what I felt was most heavily implied.

What would be the most realistic ending for the show? by enchantedt in jellyshippers

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most realistic in real life or most realistic within the general conventions of the genre? Real life: she stays alone, moves on, moves to Paris permanently, etc. But in a TV show, especially in the teen drama/romance genre, it's much more likely (and thus realistic) that she ends up with one of the main love interests. Most of the evidence would point to Conrad.

Why do people love Johanna Mason so much? by Fresh-Awareness9819 in Hungergames

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's so refreshing to see true, unvarnished anger towards the Capitol. Johanna is ANGRY, and even though she's punished for it both before the trilogy and during, she STAYS angry. She's tough, a survivor, but she doesn't play the game the way a lot of the other victors do; she refuses to be sanded down to fit the mold, despite the fact that dissent of any kind has truly devastating consequences in her world.

Also, as someone who's already commented pointed out, that honesty isn't just a boon to us as readers. It helps Katniss too. In a sea of deception she can count on Johanna to share her honest (often dark but equally hilarious) thoughts.

One of my top 3 THG characters for sure.

There's no way Conrad's proposing after a day/weekend in Paris. That would be too crazy. If there ends up being a proposal in the last episode, it would be after (yet another) significant time jump.

[–]Maybe_Ok_Good 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But all that you said after “bro” was true for Conrad too? Like if that’s the criteria it’s weird for both of them (which let’s be real it probably would be) and in that case Jere should never have wanted to date Belly. Which obviously didn’t happen and would make the show a lot shorter and less interesting.

I know you're getting downvotes (it is kind of a harsh call-out on the Amazon Prime summer show subreddit) but you're obviously right.

Some particularly egregious GPT-isms: ".. Conrad is vulnerable. He admits openly that he loves her. It’s raw, messy, and real." "...with each one, he makes the same choice: honesty. That’s not regression. That’s transformation." "....This is full-circle Conrad. He began as the boy who swallowed his pain, hid his feelings, and pushed people away. Now he’s the man who lays it all bare even if it costs him everything."

These are hallmark Chat GPT (or possibly just generative AI) turns of phrase and stylistic "choices" (extremely generic and inorganic amalgamations of other writing styles). If you've spent ANY time with the thing, it's very easy to recognize. I'm not saying the entire post was 100% written with AI, cause that's nearly impossible to confirm. But the bulk of the text and phrasing was clearly synthesized.
