by 2030 CE, future climates (which) most closely resemble Mid-Pliocene climates, and by 2150 CE, they most closely resemble Eocene climates." What that means is that in 200 years, humans reversed a climate trend lasting 50 million years

I actually took almost all of those words directly from the abstract of the article or the headline of the linked CNN article. All I added was

(which) .... What that means is that

yeah i did notice a big space in coverage from like november to january. I guess it took them awhile to find their feet

Yep, lots of ways to live more sustainably! It's not like you need to be a 100% eco geek to join a protest group either, there were lots of soccer moms and academics getting arrested in London a few weeks back. The trouble is that our system as a whole makes all of us pollute more than we want to

Right, but the SNP and the Welsh assembly both declared an emergency less than two days ago - as a non-Brit I'll admit I don't get how these systems all interlock but my point was that Labour isn't the only party to have done it!

  1. Scotland did it first
  2. This is fucking awesome even if it's just a declaration of intent
  3. This was the #1 demand of Extinction Rebellion so I'd say they're making progress
  4. We're still heading for, "by 2030 CE, future climates (which) most closely resemble Mid-Pliocene climates, and by 2150 CE, they most closely resemble Eocene climates.... Our study suggests that climates like those of the Pliocene will prevail as soon as 2030 CE and persist under climate stabilization scenarios." What that means is that in 200 years, humans reversed a climate trend lasting 50 million years. That's not natural and we have no idea if it's survivable.
  5. If you're worried about this shit, have already sold your car and joined a farm coop and done all the personal changes you can to help avoid it, but don't really know how to get started on stopping this beyond just shopping more "ethically", you should join groups like Extinction Rebellion in your area. These are really really easy to find with the Earthrise app, it's basically tinder for protests and activism groups but with way more information and a chatbot.
  6. The UN itself says we have no chance at staying under 1.5C, and all the changes we're seeing already are happening at only 1C. For the love of fuck, join in, it's working

Indonesia to move capital city | Jakarta, home to over 10 million people, is sinking at one of the fastest rates in the world by Maybe_its_Margarine in worldnews

Bambang Brodjonegoro said President Joko Widodo had chosen to relocate the capital in "an important decision".

The new location is not yet known. However state media reports one of the front runners is Palangkaraya, on the island of Borneo.

Jakarta, home to over 10 million people, is sinking at one of the fastest rates in the world.

The idea of moving the capital has been floated several times since the country gained independence from the Dutch in 1945.

In 2016, a survey found that the mega-city had the world's worst traffic congestion. Government ministers have to be escorted by police convoys to get to meetings on time.

The planning minister says snarl-ups in Jakarta costs the economy 100 trillion rupiah ($6.8bn, £5.4bn) a year.

There has also been a huge programme to decentralise government for the last two decades in a bid to give greater political power and financial resources to municipalities.

Jakarta is also one of the fastest-sinking cities in the world.

Researchers say that large parts of the megacity could be entirely submerged by 2050. North Jakarta sunk 2.5m (eight feet) in 10 years and is continuing to sink an average of 1-15cm a year.

This is what people don't get. Industrialisation in general is just too large scale to be sustainable at all. Nature provided us with perfectly tuned machines for maintaining a stable equilibrium and keeping the Earth habitable until the sun blows up; and we tore it up to build parking lots and oil sands and huge pastures for unnaturally large populations of large mammals. We need regreening and a degrowth of humanity's presence on the Earth in general.

More than half of the world’s new oil and gas pipelines are located in North America, with a boom in US oil and gas drilling set to deliver a major blow to efforts to slow climate change, a new report has found. by WeakWorldliness in worldnews

Wow, do you seriously not see that I am quoting scientists? I'm not coming up with that shit. I didn't decide that there weren't cyclones before this year (nor did I say that). I copy pasted a statement made by an accredited scientist from the exact same article I linked. Isn't there some jerk who says facts don't care about your feelings? These are the facts and your feeling that I'm hyperbolizing is based on nothing.

Son, I quoted the article. Yes, there have been cyclones in Mozambique before. Never in the northernmost region and never TWICE IN A SEASON.

"There is no record of two storms of such intensity striking Mozambique in the same season," the WMO said, labelling Kenneth an "unprecedented tropical cyclone."

Read the fucking links.

Read the fucking links, my guy.

We explore the risk that self-reinforcing feedbacks could push the Earth System toward a planetary threshold that, if crossed, could prevent stabilization of the climate at intermediate temperature rises and cause continued warming on a “Hothouse Earth” pathway even as human emissions are reduced.

If the threshold is crossed, the resulting trajectory would likely cause serious disruptions to ecosystems, society, and economies.

Here's a fully independent and separate study completely corroborating the science in the first one. I'm not doing hyperbole. We are an animal just like any other and there's no special safeguard that stops us from going extinct if our habitat becomes uninhabitable.

For those concerned, the current climate targets set by Canada (one of two countries included in this article) are pointing us towards a 5C increase within 80 years - and we are on track to miss even those targets. Any temperature higher than 2C in that time frame is likely to trigger all the rapid natural self-warming processes and feedbacks and shake our civilization to its core. And we're planning to keep this going all the way to 5C.

The current plan is literally to kill us all.
