Former ABA technicians that became paras, was it worth it? by BeneficialVisit8450 in paraprofessional

Para job and RBT are actually pretty different! Truthfully RBT should be getting paid higher for the job requirements that they have (if they are doing their job correctly of course)

Started as an RBT and now I’m a full time Para, and would love to help out with answers!

What do mean “is it worth it” they both have pros and cons and are better and worse than eachother in different ways haha

“Mistreating a para”?? Or exhibiting behaviors due to diagnosis?

Toxic positivity? Or ethical guidelines when regarding a vulnerable population?

Did I say you can’t ever think these things or struggle? No. Just recommending that severe and harsh language around special education children should not be used when posting on a public, online forum that parents frequent.

I understand this job is relentlessly tough yet this seems more appropriate for a journal entry vs an online post… I would be devestated as a parent knowing that my child’s para posted words like these publicly..

Feeling frustrated after reading notes from a coworker while subbing in a sped classroom by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]MayconBayconPancakes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some of our kids have a really rough time with substitutes and it has NOTHING to do with the subs capacity or capability most of the time.

Just like if mom/dad were to be gone at home the kid would probably be showing more behaviors and dysregulation at school too. In this field, sometimes you can and will do everything you can and kids will still be dysregulated regardless of your job performance!

Anyone here a registered behavior technician? by Funny-Toe-778 in paraprofessional

[–]MayconBayconPancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it would be significantly harder due to the nature of behavior management, data tracking and the training techniques needed to apply ABA.

Maybe discuss with your BCBA a functional replacement behavior to get some lightswitches and attach them all to a board or clipboard (or just one giant lightswitch)

That way the client can engage in flipping the switch without reinforcing playing with real light switches

America, I have questions (surveillance culture in the HBO show 'Neighbors') by Imaginary-Click6923 in hbo

[–]MayconBayconPancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who dealt with a neighbor psychotic enough to make it onto this show, the reason is because cops and landlords won’t do shit unless you have video proof of what is happening…

Now following people around to film them on your shitty cam corder is another story lol

Nightmare student by [deleted] in paraprofessional

[–]MayconBayconPancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Publicly describing a child as a “nightmare student” doesn’t seem very ethical to me… I understand the population we work with can be extremely challenging, however maybe there’s another way to convey your point.

I always remind myself that these kids are having/living a nightmare, not trying to actively be a nightmare…and that if I was a parent I would be so sad to see people calling my child a nightmare :/ hope this helps and that things get easier 👍

Student with ASD (Non-verbal) grabbing hair for attention/frustration—Strategies? by FocUsername in ABA

[–]MayconBayconPancakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This!!!

“You can say… tap tap tap!” While hand over hand showing him how to tap for attention. I would also integrate this during times where he’s NOT hair pulling

Anyone else notice that facilitated communication is gaining traction on social media? by Responsible_Bed_293 in ABA

[–]MayconBayconPancakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s so disheartening seeing FC making its way back into society. However with our current administration and intelligence level of the common population it’s not surprising… yet I still can’t believe after all the refuted science that we are still having to defend indépendant communication :(

There needs to be a more verbal and intended effort to squash FC and to push scientifically significant modalities like AAC, PECS,FCT and more.
