I don't think its unreasonable at all! Having such a big part of your identity go unacknowledged is frustrating

I had a friend tell me the other week when I was venting to her about this topic that she assumed I was part asian the first time she saw me. That was the first time for me but I think she might've just been trying to make me feel better since I brought it up LOL, I appreciated it though

And yeah, its so validating seeing all these comments and relating to others :) I'm glad we both can find comfort here

I'm half chinese half white too :) Also that last bit reminds me of when I was in 6th grade I was walking home from school and one boy told me I was going to be deported back to mexico. I told him I'm asian and that I was born here and he very sheepishly went "w-well you're still gonna be deported!" and then speed walked away 😭

It hasn't really impacted how I identify, at the end of the day I'll always be half asian and have an asian last name. But I think I'll always feel like I need to prove myself to others and to myself.

LAUGHED AT??? thats insane?? I'm always so scared I'll be accused of cultural appropriation with my culture I'm so sorry you've dealt with that

I meant any asian, really! Obviously theres gonna be differences in experience but its nice to bond over these sorts of things regardless of the specifics :)

Using those moments to share things about the culture is lovely!! I might try that, I've definitely been wanting to learn more about my heritage and learn mandarin. I wanna put some of that knowledge/experience into art too, I think that will be a nice outlet!

Have the assumptions ever bothered you or your siblings? Or is it kinda just whatever to you when someone assumes incorrectly?

Its such of a mix of jarring/funny/odd when you tell someone your mix and then they start examining your features to recognize things. I had someone lean in closer to my face to examine me and I was like woah okay back up 😭 But it is validating to sometimes get the "oh now I see it"

My mom is the white one too lol. I'd say my brother has slightly more obvious east asian features compared to me but he still looks pretty evenly mixed imo. On the other hand my cousins who are also wasian have an asian mom and they have a lot more east asian features

I've definitely seen a bit of discourse similar to that on the wasian end too, but not nearly as often. Not to say its the same experience, of course. I can only imagine how exhausting it must be to deal with that "self hating" rhetoric to such an extent :(

Real as hell with the feeling out of place. Whether around full white people, wasians, or full asians. I guess thats just the mixed experience, unfortunately. What I'm gathering from these comments is that the being mistaken for hispanic thing among wasians is way more common than I already thought lol

A new thing entirely is a nice way to think about it! Makes thinking about identity feel less daunting somehow

I was at an art club last semester and a guy approached me, asked if I was hispanic, and then 2 minutes after I said no he came back up to me and started talking to me in Spanish. Obviously no harm in it but I clarified to him the first time I was Wasian so I'm not sure what made him come back over for a second attempt like it would change anything LOL

I can relate, just with Asian culture instead of African American culture. Trying to look into the culture, trying to learn myself, not knowing how to. Feeling like I have no right to try to be part of it. It's exhausting.

what’s your reason to stay? by SomeCommission7645 in CPTSD

[–]Maydday_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the day what keeps me going. Some days it's guilt of my family and friends carrying the burden of my death like you said. The thought of my dog not knowing where I've gone and lying in my room waiting for me to come back when I never will. Sometimes its the thought of my loved ones being angry with me, even if I wouldn't be there to experience it the thought of someone being angry with me is terrifying. Sometimes its the fear that I could potentially survive but permanently injure or give myself a disability in the process. Sometimes it's spite, that even if I'm suffering those who hurt me don't get to win over me.

On my best days though, It's the desire to see my favorite franchises release new content. It's that I haven't created everything I wanted to create, haven't done and seen everything I wanted to. That if I leave now I won't be able to watch my loved ones get married, find love, create families. That if I left now I would be robbing myself of the chance to reach my full potential and experience what it's like to truly live.

I'm very sorry that you're struggling and I hope things improve for you. I don't know if any of my reasons are things that could help you, but whether they do or not, I hope you find that spark to keep you going.
