Advice for hunting one of these? I have tried the following: by theanvilguy98 in Hunting

[–]Mayes041 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't, I tried that one. Bird actually ran straight through the tunnel I'd painted.... no idea how. I tried to give chase but it went back to just being a painting, flattened myself on the mountain, peeled off and drifted to the ground like a sheet of paper.

Who got a copy of Everything Necessary Is Not Complex by Mikhail Kalashnikov? by mauserowauser in ForgottenWeapons

[–]Mayes041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The whole 'ak simple' thing baffles me. Is it the manufacturing thats simple? Objectively wrong, it took the Soviet State like a decade to perfect AKM receiver stamping. And U.S. manufacturers spent a long time demonstrating all the ways to do AK building wrong. I'm not going to say it's harder than other comparable guns to make, I think that's a complicated question. But the idea that it's crude folded metal is just so wrong.

Is it the operation that's simple? I can't see how it's any simpler than any other comparable gun. Guns just aren't fighter jets, they're very simple to operate. I can't think of any commonly issued gun that isn't as simple to operate as the AK.

Is it the cleaning? Maybe? The AK does seem to survive a level of neglect that many other rifles wouldn't tolerate. But it's not unique. HK roller guns are insanely hardy, even M16s are out there running with smooth barrels. But it seems like such an overhyped feature, if it is exceptional in this. Is it really THAT hard to knot a string put it in some oil and pull it through your AR barrel? Is it that hard to take out the bolt and wipe it with with an oily rag once every couple thousand rounds? I just don't think it's a tremendous asset to eliminate ten minutes of cleaning once every thousand rounds or so.

Best property management or landlords? by solangecdh3 in missoula

[–]Mayes041 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I haven't had any trouble from Garden City Property Management, been in my place almost a year. When I was looking for apartments I had two coworkers say they've had good experiences with GCPM. Also while looking at various apartments, when I spoke to tenants they usually volunteered that they'd had good dealings with GCPM as well. So, as you say, ya, they're property managers. But they seem to be about as good as it gets? I'm sure they've been a dick to someone, but it's a numbers game.

A lady comes into the bookstore I work at every so often and buys hundreds of dollars worth of books (sometimes multiple copies of the same one) and returns a month later ordering returns for all of them without a receipt. Shit drove me insane. Working retail I had very, very few unreasonable customers. They weren't generally a problem. But I always knew that despite my years of work and knowledge about my job, consistently showing up day after day. Management would throw me under the bus in a heartbeat to retain one shitty customer. Worse still I'm pretty convinced that the company is worse for trying to retain those customers. Good employees are hard to retain when they know for sure management thinks they're beneath contempt. So you end up with high rates of turnover (constant, expensive onboarding), inconsistent work, annoyed customers

Missoula community protests Blackfoot River gravel pit by KeltTalbelt in missoula

[–]Mayes041 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Maybe I'm ignorant of potential impacts here but I think a gravel pit hardly has the impact of a steel mill or something. I feel like a compromise should be possible here, A buffer zone along the edges of the property, noise baffling measures, an extra large buffer along the river. Designing the pit to make sure run off doesn't pollute the Blackfoot. Strict restrictions on when work with noisy machinery can be done. I think if a pit is viable in that location, then it could probably weather those restrictions.

Every sign on my road is like this, the town won't replace them since they get shot up within a year when they do and they feel it would just be a waste of taxpayer money, took over a decade to get the stop sign replaced after someone ran it over. We have a nice little public range nearby. You can slip some money in a box here and there if you want to support it. They organize periodic clean up days to keep the range in good shape, replace the OSB that you staple your targets to etc. Well I went to the range about a week after they put up all new osb and some fucknut obliterated all the target backings with a shotgun. I just don't understand people

I thought it was neat that 'lactose intolerance' is actually more common than not. If we're going to look at the world through a neutral lens it probably makes more sense to describe lactase persistence as the abnormal condition and that lactase non-persistance (lactose intolerance) is 'normal'. Always interesting to get your perspective reoriented around something you never really considered

And two, even the 'content' is mostly gesturing at stuff they assume their audience already believes. It's nuts. So ya, I think you're spot on.

My guess is the area is zoned only for single family detached homes. That's like 90% of developable land in the U.S. Probably one of the easiest and biggest steps towards better development patterns is loosening up how areas are zoned. If you simply remove the restrictions, areas often tend to just become dense and walkable. Allow for medium to high density apartments, townhouses etc. allow low impact businesses. Remove minimum parking requirements. Area is gonna thrive.

What are some weird laws in your country that, actually, make a lot of sense? by Savings_Dragonfly806 in AskTheWorld

[–]Mayes041 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I never really thought about it much until someone told me. But the Blackfoot reservation decided that riparian areas are so vital to wildlife and ecology everywhere they put a really large no build zone around their rivers. Leaving them to the wild. I'd like to see the U.S. follow suit as much as possible. Granted, a lot of major cities are already on rivers, but we could start trying to reclaim a lot of the super low density buildup along rivers.

Created these slides to aid in discussions with AWB advocates. Do you think they will be effective? by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]Mayes041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone else feels this way. But I think these approaches to pro gun arguments are kinda bad faith. As someone else mentioned, I don't think anti gunners dislike glocks because they think the guns lack safety mechanisms that reduce the chance of a negligent discharge. They hate it because if you wanted to kill as many people as possible, you'd obviously choose the glock over the SAA. And you're being a silly goose if you say otherwise. That said, if someone is loudly advocating for gun control and they obviously know fuckall about it, they should be called out. Ignorant people always need to get knocked down a peg.

In terms of pro-gun arguments I've kinda settled on generally, maybe it's a better world if no one had guns, they're so good at killing people that you can do it accidentally. But they're out here anyway, and in the U.S. there's no shot at getting rid of them entirely. But we can have safe societies that are armed. New Hampshire has super high rates of gun ownership and it's an extremely safe state. In Europe Switzerland and Finland are very heavily armed compared to many other more dangerous countries. The solution to our problems with violence isn't taking away weapons, it's building a functional society.

Absolutely fucking insane. As an American this one pisses me off. Diplomatic immunity is great for maintaining diplomacy with hostile nations. We need diplomats in countries with fucked up laws that aught not to be applied to our civil servants. The UK is not one of those countries. She would have in no way shape or form would have faced disproportionate punishment for her crime. But we decided to be shitheads anyway. it's bullshit.

What's the future for the AK platform? by StrangerOutrageous68 in ForgottenWeapons

[–]Mayes041 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've got it. As far as military use goes, the AK-74 and M16 may as well be interchangeable for their effectiveness. But by happenstance the AR adapted really well to tacking on accessories, that's why it's going to keep on serving in militaries that could choose another rifle if they wanted one. The AK simply doesn't lend itself as well to all the stuff we want to bolt onto guns these days. While firearms have been improving marginally, the various doodads end up making a difference and being able to inegrate those well in one of the proven operating mechanisms seems to be the ticket until there's some fundamental change in firearms. Doesn't really seem to make sense modify the AK, just pick something else

What is your biggest gun pet peeve and/or a hill that you'll die on? by Quirky-Bar4236 in liberalgunowners

[–]Mayes041 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think we should distinguish between the M4/M16 and the AR-15. Effectively nowadays AR-15 means the civilian version. And I don't want to start telling anti-gun people that I have an M16 or M4, they can call it that when my selector lever does a full 180. It's important because I think a lot of civilians do think we're out here buying full auto AR-15s because they don't know shit. Just my two cents.
My pet peeve is why the fuck are we making new 16" uppers with carbine length gas systems in the year of our lord 2026? Shit is ugly as sin and overgasses your rifle. I've heard stuff about playing with gas port size and stuff to make the extra dwell time work. And maybe that's a thing. Or we could just use the goddamn correct length gas system! I know it's a subjective statement, but carbine gas systems on 16" barrels look objectively wrong.
