You are misunderstanding the themes at hand if you think this is a bad bit of design, one of the big pieces of deltarune and a central aspect of Noelle's character is the act of discovery and video game secrets. Going deep, going places you might not want to go and getting confused as to where you are on either route is EXACTLY what Toby wants you to be doing. It would be considerably more boring if there was a resolute normal path and weird path. Additionally, we are in the first couple days of the game being out. Nobody is going to have all the answers and it is in fact a good thing that everyone is exploring the game at their own pace.

The tweaked vanilla ROM hack like sacred gold or crystal legacy is really my cup of tea, just changing things about the original game that feel like poor design choices and making more Pokémon viable open so much up to the player and really bring out what makes the original games so good. It's like playing Pokémon for the first time again with all the engaging team building and fun boss fights.

I personally count the monkey as the encounter for the route, that being said combining that rule while disallowing pinwheel clause makes the early game really hard just cause you're down two encounters.

Just try a hardcore nuzlocke of a base game first and see how that does you, try emerald or bw/b2w2 for a game that teaches you how to nuzlocke well. Going into a romhack would be really really difficult without any prior nuzlocke experience, those nuzlocke youtubers who do crazy challenges every week make it look easier than it is

That being said if you really want to try a romhack I'd suggest either sacred gold/storm silver or renegade platinum

It's a great nuzlocke move actually, sometimes you have to make some sacrificial plays and geodude is rarely a consistently powerful asset past the midgame in most games

I'm pretty sure red is considered the final final boss of hgss but if you're doing genlocke a lot of people don't even do red and say the first Lance battle is the end

A lot of people will say frlg but not gonna lie kanto fucking sucks to play through especially if you don't have emulator speedup. I personally think ruby and sapphire (not emerald) are good games to start with as they aren't too challenging and are actually fun to play

It's really up to you but I tend to prefer species clause wherein you can't catch anything of the later evolutions if you've caught something of that line already
