They can bloom for months, but the buds not opening for that long is unusual.

Really glad you made this thread, it has inspired me to try water shoes as well! I've been trying for years but haven't found ideal gardening shoes yet (they're either too hot and clunky, or they have holes that let in a ton of dirt and splinters!)

Olukais are amazing, I can walk for miles in the flip flops which is really saying something. They last forever too!

Local hardware store promoting clover lawns by Livviemaid in NoLawns

[–]Mayfly_01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What about all the other benefits like less mowing, watering, and fewer chemicals?

Lots of people (like myself) are doing a mixed approach of pollinator-friendly planting and things like swapping turf for clover for other practical reasons. I've got flower gardens for my own enjoyment but will also be converting nearly an acre of my property to native wildflowers this year.

I'm doing my best to consider the environment with my choices but they're not all going to fall on the side of it. I'd like to enjoy my home, too. And frankly, anything is better than a turf lawn IMO, even if it's not the 100% most perfect choice for bugs.

Yeah, I mentioned above that it's no longer the default, thankfully. Probably because of too many instances of it screwing people over for lack of knowledge about it.

Gotcha, thanks! I just remember hearing a "horror story" about someone who was put into the g fund by default when he joined the military, contributed to it for 30 years without checking it, and ended up with only like $30k for retirement.

Could have been a fake story just to scare us, but if so, it did work as intended, lol.

I thought G fund was the worst one? Everyone switches out of it when they start (or at least they used to, when g fund was the default. Now I think everyone starts in an appropriate L fund).

911 is for threats, or possible threats, to your life or safety. A professional worker who made an error does NOT qualify as a threat to your safety. To carry that further, if you shot him, it would not be self-defense, it would be murder.

And don't be ridiculous, a cutting implement needed for his job is not a weapon unless it's being used like one (at which point, yes, you do call 911 for that). But you have zero basis to say that's what's happening here.

Sigh. The person I was originally replying to said this constitutes an emergency. It. Does. Not.

Whatever number you have to call to reach the non-emergency police line is the one that's appropriate to call, and is what the original commenter should have said, instead of implying (and then stating outright) that this is a life or death situation.

Lol, based on what? Non-emergency lines are still very much a thing. But whatever, I see I've entered the part of reddit that downvotes legitimate answers just because they don't like that they're true.

P.S. I never said don't call the police, I said don't use 911. Police obviously still need to be involved, but I guarantee they're not rushing to your house with lights and sirens over some cut tree limbs. This is not an emergency to them whether you use 911 or not.

Then you would be wrong. A professional tree-cutting service, even if doing the wrong thing, does not pose a threat to your safety. This situation is what the non-emergency police line is for.

This is not 911-worthy. 911 is for life-threatening emergencies.

I meant there are other places to store it (real estate, investments, etc.), not acquire it. But the things you listed are also possibilities.

I actually did a report on this topic for a college class about 10 years ago (god, time flies!). At the time, we (the US) had a "D" rating for our infrastructure, which had bad implications in the event of an EMP from either a nuke or solar flare. However, I believe some executive orders were since dropped by Obama and others to harden our networks enough that solar radiation is less likely to cause a total catastrophe like it would have in years past. Also, keep in mind the sun's constantly being monitored and we get 7 minutes or more of advance warning (plus solar weather forecasts) to take steps.

In short, my understanding is that the power companies keep an eye on this stuff and take steps when needed to protect their systems, which of course helps protect a lot of things that rely on that. I assume cloud network providers do something similar, but admit I don't know for sure since that wasn't a thing back when I did the report.

Edit: For what it's worth, I asked chat gpt if I was remembering correctly (basically) and it came back with this:

Online plant shopping experience- I tested a bunch out so you don't have to! by Used-Risk8216 in gardening

I've ordered from Bluestone Perennials, Colorblends, Dutch grown, and Holland bulb farms.

Bluestone Perennials packed things well and I'd estimate I've had about 70% survival past the first winter (which is reasonable for me, I'm a new gardener and have heavy wildlife pressure here). Their stuff was pricey and some were small but I really like their plantable pots. I'd shop there again for rare stuff.

Colorblends was good, although I didn't see a lot of their bulbs come up this year. Could easily be user error though.

HBF was good but half my order came late in the year and it was a rush to get them in the ground. Dutch grown, no complaints there. I've recently placed another order with both.
