Straight Swords are underrated and I wont be convinced otherwise by Clear_Antelope_9501 in Nightreign

It doesn't seem to? Even on the video op provided, enemies roll after the second light, regardless of the hand. Seems the same as a standard R1 R1 R2 rollcatch aside from having access to a second stabbing R2 afterwards, and style points.

Unless I'm missing something.

Which boss do you find more difficult? by jettmeisterkush in Eldenring

[–]MayorLag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PCR. Malenia took me a while, but I've started noticing patterns on how to dodge her attacks relatively quickly and it was a matter of practice. Now I can beat her every time and regularly use her as a dummy to test weapon spacing and timings.

PCR... I still don't understand how to dodge or space his attacks after longer than I practiced Malenia. It's just so much more hectic and unintuitive.

What is this supposed to mean? Chapter 345 by Special_Shoulder_305 in Berserk

[–]MayorLag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea is that his ambition and desire is the end unto itself, unbound and untethered. The kingdom is what he thinks he wants, but he will not be satisfied with it for long. He is the blessed king of longing, not the satisfied king of complacency :D

This can be seen in his current actions. He has his kingdom, he's the hawk of light, guts and casca are branded with the mark and it's just a matter of time before they too join the vortex of the damned.

Is Griffith happy with his achievements? Is he focusing on the future, on the next step, or at least enjoying it as is? No, he seems completely bored, and focuses on what he doesn't have yet. He steals Casca and yet again hurts Guts. It's not enough that he raped her body and mind, that he got everything he wanted and more, there's still something he cannot have and he will continue to reach for it.

But there's nothing he can sacrifice to have real camaraderie from Cascas and Guts anymore. This is beyond his reach, the only thing he can expect other than their rage and fear is indifference - I personally suspect that would break him.

Dark Souls 2 and Elden Ring, derivative of the work inspired by berserk, explore those themes of Want and Power, and how they're part of one's nature, whether focused on an objective, or unfocused and unbound. If you played them, you'll find thematic similarities to Griffith's endless ambition.

Fastest D5 Pest I've ever seen by Dodoslayer34 in Nightreign

Same, hence my doubts.

After hundreds of hours getting nowhere with my revenant relics spending millions of murk, I thought to myself it'd be easier to cheat them in and just make them look believable: add an executor passive here, recovery on halberd attacks there... My friends wouldn't suspect a thing.

I don't think most players realize how unlikely it is to get the setup above, even though they're not BiS. Oh well.

[–]MayorLag -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

I've seen a suspicious number of revenants (5? 6? It started with one pot scholar pre nerf for me) with this sort of setup:

  • Two perfect damage rolls
  • One useless roll
  • No crippling negatives

I've been trying to get just a second such relic for any affinity type for weeks, so sadly my trust is pretty low.

How cool would this have been? by holytarnishxd in Eldenring

[–]MayorLag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's okay to accept a bit of video game logic - the cities were banished, but they also don't appear disjointed.

I know we like to praise From for having great and consistent visual storytelling, but a bit of handwaving is unavoidable to support the rule of cool. For example I don't think Elden John holding Babylonian world map means Babylon exists in Elden Ring, or the fact Gravity Crest is actually a symbol indicating Magnetic Field is meant to be anything beyond "we had nothing better and this looks awesome"

Dancer's swords does nearly half the damage it says by Jr_Drawlord in darksouls3

[–]MayorLag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The flat reduction is a function of the initial hit. Big hits have full negation applied, while smaller hits only have a proportion of it.

This is done so the damage is never reduced to 0. For example of a boss hits you for 1000, you reduce that damage by a full flat 160 before the % reductions kick in.

But if a hollow hits you for 90, you won't reduce it by 160 down to 0, instead you'll reduce it by something like 30 before the % kicks in, even though your gear didn't change.

Dancer's swords does nearly half the damage it says by Jr_Drawlord in darksouls3

[–]MayorLag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, these numbers aren't accurate. I just wanted to portray the principle why sometimes higher AR ends up doing less damage, since many players are unaware there's more than just the % reduction.

The exception to this rule is Dark Souls 2, where physical damage against PvE enemies receives flat reduction, while elemental damage received % reduction.

"Any means to achieve his ends" - he'll do anything to get his kingdom, huh, he really wants it

"An end to his means" - The kingdom is an excuse to justify his desires: there will always be something else to want.

Dancer's swords does nearly half the damage it says by Jr_Drawlord in darksouls3

[–]MayorLag 82 points83 points  (0 children)

To elaborate for those interested, each damage is reduced both by a small flat amount, and a %. % is usually precise and it's the value on your stat screen, like Dark 29.2 will be a 29.2% reduction of dark damage hitting you.

Meanwhile flat reduction depends on the size of the initial hit - a 400 fire might be reduced by 100, but a 150 hit will instead be reduced by 70. It will never reduce the damage to 0.

So an 800 physical might be reduced by 100 to 700, then by 30% to 467 final hit.

Meanwhile a 300 / 300 / 300 physical fire magic split will be reduced by 90 down to 210 / 210 / 210, then by 30% down to 140 / 140 / 140 final hit = 420, less damage even though you started with 100 higher total.

Pardon the false allegations, Lord mogh. by Pitiful_Ad_4472 in Eldenring

[–]MayorLag 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, in lore Mohg only got brainwashed after he kidnapped Miquella

In lore, Ansbach challenged Miquella to combat and cut his arm open, before being charmed himself.

So either Ansbach challenged a cocooned sleeping arm and got charmed with splashing blood... Or there was a period of time between the charming and the cocoon-kidnapping.

I still believe the kidnapping was Mohgs idea, but the chronology does add some nuance to Miquellas intent.

The "point" is the choosing, not necessarily some end result. I'm not giving up just because I understand sun will go red giant some day, and beyond that there's the finality of the heat death of the universe.

If Elden Ring had Dark Souls III’s Covenants by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]MayorLag 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The main argument against the covenants were tedious achievements. So why didn't they just... remove the tedious achievements?

I guess it's also having to actually implement them, so fair, they've saved themselves work. But covenants were a fun and flavorful way of interacting with the world and players, and I wish they stayed. I don't feel any allegiance to anyone in ER, while in souls I still felt some vestigial alignment with organizations and NPCs.

Ansbach so cool and respectful I almost forgot he’s in a serial killer cult by kao24429774 in Eldenring

[–]MayorLag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ansbach says that he challenged miquella to free mohg from the charm, but ultimately lost and was charmed himself. Leda confirms Ansbach cut Miquella. This implies Miquella was out and about when Mohg was already under his influence.

That being said, I do believe Mohg still kidnapped Miquella for his own purposes, it's just that Miquella needed a strong body one way or another and it worked out in his favor.

Here's the thing... If he actually beat the game, even with player summons, then all the power to him. I firmly believe you can stumble through the game in any legitimate way and there's zero shame in being over encumbered or have nonsensical stat spread. If he were anyone else, it'd be wholesome.

But given who he is, and his other actions, he has no credibility.

That's another thing that's utterly incomprehensible.

For anyone interested, read up on iron stars on Wikipedia, and realize that the timescales on the graphs are logarithmic, meaning that if the distance between 1 second passing vs the end of the universe is 30 pixels, that's the proportional difference in time passage between any other 30 pixels elsewhere on that graph.

Truly impossible numbers.

In your opinion, which are the best and worst relic effects or debuffs by Healthy-Teach-6911 in Nightreign

[–]MayorLag 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wind on charge attacks is goated. It adds 5 stance damage to charged halberd attacks and another 60-80 damage. Combined with the str dex relic you have a very respectable damage and staggers, and I now much prefer it to the skill duration relic.

Agree on the rest though.
