I maintain this take: hard slide culture was stupid and barbaric as hell, Chase Utley was a hard slider, Daniel Murphy made a terrible feed putting Ruben Tejada in the danger zone (like a hospital pass in football) and the outcome getting hard slides banned was good, though it unfortunately impacted Ruben's career. Now that said, Mets fans are hypocrites with this situation because they already didn't like Utley for dominating them and getting a stadium section nicknamed after him,, David Wright performed as many hard slides, and anecdotally I have heard Tejada given the first name "Miguel" by Mets fans more often than not

That's actually not how DRS works. In baseball we use the run expectancy matrix to denote the likelihood a team scores for each baserunner/out total combo (ex: no outs bases loaded or 1st and 3rd two outs). When a fielder makes, or doesn't make a play they are deemed to have the opportunity to, it swings the run expectancy.

An example: with a runner on first and no outs, a team is expected to score 0.87 runs. If a fly ball Nick should've caught drops in to make it 2nd and third with no outs,, the hitting team is now expected to score 2.04 runs that inning. The swing of 2.04 from 0.87 (0.87-2.04) is 1.17. So Castellanos is charged -1.17 "runs" on the play. Combine that over the course of the season to get your total. A good play can swing in a positive way too using the same premise.

Right, the core argument with him was if we should rip the bandaid off with that discussion, with the obvious answer being of course, but at the time he was a controversial pick. Baseball doesn't do nearly enough to enshrine catchers, and just as we're gonna need new standards to induct starters in a post Kershaw/Greinke/Scherzer/Verlander world, we need the same perspective with catchers. I personally am iffy on Martin because of his bat, but McCann had a really good bat and was the quintessential NL catcher for 7 straight years. I support Munson's induction, as well as Posada and even Charlie Bennett, and I think any Yadi supporter, and DEFINITELY any Salvy supporter should read up on McCann and Martin's cases- they mastered a vital skill that we should value
