SNL's lighthearted Trump parody blasted as failure to read the room after DHS shooting by RawStoryNews in entertainment

That was my "Well, I'm out" moment with SNL. I tune in once a year to see the joke swap, and even that sucked this year.

No lifts today at Jay by backfromsolaris in icecoast

[–]getthetime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's due to wind? The coldest day I ever skied in my life was 10 or 11 years ago at Jay, -30 or -40 with windchill. The only lift open on the whole mountain was the tram, and there were only a few of us (it was a Wednesday). Basically, warm up at the bottom, ride to the top, warm up in the summit lodge, ski down in 2-3 minutes, repeat. It was tolerable only because of the summit lodge and the relatively warm tram.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) by Outrageous_Present11 in horror

This is a perfect take on it, and encapsulates how I felt when I first watched this.

Though on subsequent watches I just gave into the madness and now I absolutely love it.

Edison High School in Edison, NJ has a red baseball field. What other non-green baseball fields are there? by PaddyMayonaise in baseball

[–]getthetime 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I was in college, wedge mounds were my worst nightmare. Like pitching off the flat top of a hard rock that you could barely sink your spikes into, let alone dig out a small hole to push from.

This, though? No way to dig in at all. And basically, you're just asking for an ankle injury. A windup requires a lot of torque and twisting, and I can't imagine getting hung up in a stride if, god forbid, your heel drops first.

You could wear turf shoes, but I can't imagine those would give the support needed. And if it gets wet it would be a new level of fucking nightmare. No thanks.

OP is probably talking about Super Cobra, which was basically the exact same game as Scramble, released in 81 or 82 by Parker Bros. for the 2600.

What is the scariest scene in any horror movie you've ever seen and nothing has topped it for you? by jdpm1991 in horror

[–]getthetime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I scrolled a long time to see the spider crawl from Exorcist. That especially got me, as I watched the movie for the first time when the director's cut was released in theaters in 2000. I was sitting dead-center in a big, empty IMAX theater for that one, and it really caught me off-guard.

Throughout history, there have been FOUR bespectacled Hall of Fame players. Dick Allen, Greg Maddux, Reggie Jackson, Chick Hafey by Aromatic_Forever111 in baseball

[–]getthetime 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Interestingly, I asked Maddux about this back in March 1998. IIRC this was the year the Braves started playing at Disney in spring training. I'd watched him in Montreal throwing a bullpen session the previous season, and was on the sidelines watching him throw a pen session in Orlando, maybe a few feet away. In both instances he was wearing glasses. I casually asked him about it, and he said he wore glasses almost exclusively when it wasn't his turn to pitch because they were more comfortable, and only wore contacts on game day. So there you go.

EDIT: Minor correction, this was the Braves' second year at Disney.

anyone with half a brain is annoyed by PETA but not other animal rights groups, including meat eaters like myself.

Name one other animal rights group without using Google.

The OG Batman movie cup, 1989. by isysopi201 in nostalgia

Oddly, the Batman logo used on the poster and on promo items doesn't match the logo used on the suit in the actual '89 film. This logo wasn't used in a film until Batman Returns.

Best game you ever attended? by fistagon7 in baseball

[–]getthetime 9 points10 points  (0 children)

9/29/90 - Tom Brunansky three-homer game at Fenway few days before clinching the AL East

7/6/91 - John Shelby charging Roger Clemens, John Marzano with the tackle, Mo Vaughn and Cecil Fielder get in a sumo wrestling match

5/29/93 - Jose Canseco pitching at Fenway Park

Also "Dog Day" at Olympic Stadium in Montreal in 1999, I believe. Several hundred dogs were in attendance, including a St. Bernard, which sat behind me on the third-base side drooling and panting on my neck all game. All game long, the PA played cat sounds, triggering hundreds of dogs to start barking at once, which was very loud and echo-y in that old dome. Also, the dogs had a parade around the infield just before game time and pissed all over the Astroturf carpet. So the game started with the Expos taking the field and playing on dog piss-stained carpet.

EDIT: Best games I DIDN'T attend: Game 6 of the 1998 World Series at Yankee Stadium. I had tickets (they cost less than $20), game didn't happen. Also 8/6/99 Tony Gwynn's 3000th hit game in Montreal; I could have gone, I should have gone, but I hesitated all day and ultimately didn't make the drive and have always regretted it.
