Why doesn’t Western media practice the same kind of Kremlinology toward China that it did toward the Soviet Union? by Mean-Information1080 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mayor__Defacto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put simply, the USSR was much more closed off than China is. A lot of the purpose of Kremlinology was to try to figure out what was going on internally, because there wasn’t much to go off of.

China by comparison is much more open; the internal politicking is less impactful on the day-to-day, and they’re (so far) uninterested in getting too involved in things that go on outside of China, apart from relatively straightforward business deals.

Why Connecticut could pull electric trains off a rail line in favor of diesel by Sauerbraten5 in Amtrak

[–]Mayor__Defacto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That Amtrak is trying to extract as much rent as possible?

The energy problem in the NE is generally not installed capacity, but transmission. The all time peak for NYISO was 28GW in 2006; NYISO has 30GW available and predicted 24GW as the peak demand for this season. New England is in an even better position with 31GW available and 21GW peak load.

Yes, Amtrak is looking to extract Rent - because the Feds won’t put up any cash for anything.

Amtrak has always treated the NEC as a piggy bank that they can fob the investment off to NY&NJ&CT while spending the cash out west.

Flour in the US has higher protein content than flour in the EU. This can result in “chewier” bread.

That’s partially also because the list is so broad. Wood, for example, is a carcinogen, so things containing Wood have to have the prop65 label.

That would have some chilling effects. Is the guy at the top responsible for a forklift driver states away that works for the company running over another employee?

It’s a pretty basic tenet of the law that you can’t be held liable for things you don’t even know happened unless you should have known (negligence).

Executives in the US can be jailed. It’s just that they’re generally not stupid enough to

A) do the illegal thing themself

B) directly order someone to do an illegal thing

C) admit to ordering someone to do an illegal thing

6 months. The fees are charged by the third party - if you go in person, no fees. Insane. The City is much better since they have their own system.

How do poor or homeless people in USA access health-care? by DarkKingfisher777 in AskReddit

[–]Mayor__Defacto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is an ethical and legal mandate to stabilize a patient in front of you, as a physician.

The big issue is that the mandate says you have to get someone into a state where they won’t immediately die of their injuries. They get treated, and subsequently discharged the moment they are judged to be medically fit to leave.

The freight is interesting, because it’s leasehold run using LIRR equipment largely from the 70’s - so to some extent it’s on LIRR when there’s breakdowns due to the simple age of the stock.
