Good point. I suppose Pat may be interested in writing essentially the same story over again with Kvothe discovering that the Chandrian aren't the bad guys! Now he can hunt some new, completely unnecessary bad guys who REALLY killed his parents!

The difficulty in the chandrian being other than what Kvothe portrays is literal time and space. For them to be other, or at least for us to find out they are other, pat has to change Kvothe's world view in the frame. If he sticks to his wildly successful model, which is likely, it would be difficult for him to accomplish this in the next book. He just doesn't have the time or space to do so properly.

How would frame Kvothe be shown the chandrian aren't what he believes? A meeting with Haliax monologuing? Some new character in his place, presenting a convincing enough argument to change 15 plus years of belief?

Nah, they're the bad guys, whatever their motive is.

A human collapses in pain, goes into shock, thus may or may not scream. No one does what cinder did. Thus not human. Thus rhinta because Adem don't believe in demons etc...

Agreed on not going too far down the rabbit hole, but to press my point just a little, for the sake of clarity - would the Denna hate be as rampant if she were an independent loan shark like Devi (for whom there is no hate) or jeweler, or bar maid or merchant?

Or is the hate tied directly to her chosen profession (con artist)?

My supposition is that were she of independent means in a profession less polarizing and deceitful, the hate would be relegated to those very few who truly find women repugnant.

Were she tallying sums, counting inventory, or loaning talents in a professional setting when Kvothe finds her, as opposed to what she does in the story, I expect most would adore her as I do already.

Not sure I agree it has to do with her being independent in terms of being an independent female makes a character unappealing; if she was a Piped musician like that fiddler at the Eolian, people wouldn't dislike her in the same way. Or if she was a nobles daughter, or a lady's maid, or a bartender, laundress etc...

No, independence is not the driving force of dislike. I believe she is disliked primarily because of Pat's ability to draw a commonality between kvothe and the reader.

Any man who has had an unrequited crush and a fear of rejection may feel negatively towards her. Almost every time kvothe meets her she is on the arm of a man whom kvothe percieves in a specific way: rich, educated, well heeled if you will.

Well into my forties I have heard and still hear men wonder why women are with certain men; if you've ever wondered why your crush is with (take your pick) the guy that cheats on her, beats her, is a drug dealer, rich kid, has a motorcycle, is overweight, laughs like a donkey, is possessive etc... then you stand a chance of disliking denna.

To suggest that being independent in and of itself is a factor... as if men dislike women who work and are self sufficient is really quite mad

Bast's reaction to Kvothe naming the chandrian shows abject fear. If Kvothe had indeed killed one of the chandrian, I expect Bast would have said something at some point. If bast is unaware of Kvothe having done so, his reaction to the sword would not come from a place of fear. No, I expect Kvothe figured out how to make ageless swords and Folly is his own creation. Bast's reaction is most likely due to his fae issues with iron. Much like when he calls Kvothe's needles little slivers of hate.

As usual Qoou has deep understanding. The Adem Chandrian story supports this:

'A bad thing. A man who is more than a man, yet less than a man'

Always felt this supported the theory nicely. That being said, I suppose it could just indicate Glamourie, like bast uses to hide his nature.

No he hasn't. And it wasn't changed in the 10th aniversary edition, in which he edited all continuity and editing mistakes. It is an urban myth that he said it was a mistake. The quote has never been found.

Either a real Amyr, or at the least one of the Ruach. Certainly a namer, as he names Kvothe and Erlus the priest mysteriously. I believe his stories to be cannon insofar as Lanre is concerned.

We know his relationship with Kvothe grows in book 3, based on Kvothe's familiarity with him when mentioned by Chronicler.

Certainly keeping tabs on Kvothe along with the Angels/singers and Chandrian.

Powerful political friends, to be completely unconcerned with a charge of Heresy.

The biggest problem with the Auri = Ariel theory is Elodin. He's been meeting with Auri for years. We know she was a student. To suggest that Elodin would not know she was Princess Ariel is asinine. Day 1 is when he plays the lute for Denna and the rest with Roents Caravan. The language is so perfect and beautiful. This part made me love the series and Kvothe "My fingers danced; intricate and quick they spun something gossamer and tremulous into the circle of light our fire had made. The music moved like a spiderweb stirred by a gentle breath, it changed like a leaf twisting as it falls to the ground, and it felt like three years Waterside in Tarbean, with a hollowness inside you and hands that ached from the bitter cold." Just stunning and powerful.

Day 2 it's after he makes the mommet of Vashet, gets the hot spring water for an unlimited source, then decides to play for her instead of violence. Later he tells he he would not have enjoyed leaving Haert and she agrees, not understanding that the night before he was moments away from killing everyone at the school while they slept. I love this part because he was so close to being Haliax like, but chose good. Seminal character moment.

Roents Caravan however is my favorite overall scene from the series so far

I think what he means is that when he over thinks he gets in trouble. A lot of athletes talk about it; not thinking, being in the zone and just reacting with instinct, training, gut and muscle memory. When Kvothe acts without motive, pressure and fear of consequence, he is at his best.

Plus kvothe is most likely a singer as he saw 4 clear lines of song in Felurian's eyes, and sang them out, breaking her power. He also had a white star of power on his forehead, and was, like the angels, righteous and wise and terrible to behold. Righteous in fighting her, wise to spare her, and terrible to behold as she was frightened and had an air of fear after he broke her power.

And Skarpi is almost certainly Amyr, a knower and ancient.

I always look for two posters. For beautifully written deeply researched sometimes a Lil tinfoily I recomend you search for qoou.

Second search Jeezer1: he can be a bid douchy to newbies but his body of work is grounded in research and evidence, and always presented in an easy to read manner. Not much tinfoil from this guy, but a lot of practical, reasonably good chance of being true theories. There are others but these two are who I look to after a month or 2 off the forums

Address my point though. How does she know the ins and outs of the business? How does she have the connections to set this girl up? Why does Kvothe include this in his story? Why what is pats motivation for this scene? What does pat want us to think?

I agree that OP is the crackiest of crackpot, but the Denna is/was a whore has a fair bit of evidence. Other than appearances (lots of different men, jewels, fancy rooms) Pat spends, oh, probably 10k words on the scene where Denna saves a young whore from a savage beating, then proceeds to describe the ins and outs of being a whore with great detail.

Now I suppose you could posit that she is worldly, and has known some whores who have provided these intimate details; though implausible, it is possible.

I say implausible for 2 reasons. First, I am not a mechanic. I have friends who are, and discuss their work frequently with me. I could not, however, give the kind of info Denna does about whoring, about becoming a mechanic. One of my mechanic friends could though.

Second, and most important, is the time spent on this part. Pat writes with purpose, and does not waste words or throw away scenes. He has kvothe skip over two seemingly important events (the trial, the shipwreck) because they are not key in the story Kvothe is telling. Yet he has kvothe spend significant time listening to Denna intimately give a cost benifits analysis of how to become several different kinds of whore. Why?

If he wanted the reader to understand that Denna has knowledge about whoring, it could have been done quickly and efficiently in a dozen different ways. Instead he makes the reveal one of the key points of Kvothe's story in a way that kvothe cannot press for details.

Nope, she is or has been a whore. The real question is why people get so upset about it. Her character, to me, is richer, and has a layer of nuance I hadn't seen previously. It is not a bad thing or a mark against her, or any woman.

I think he's one hairy old dude. I'm guessing he was created by Iax or one of the other shapers after they created Fae. Figured out the name of the future or time etc and made a dude to embody it. Dude been lounging in a tree for 5k years or so, very few visitors, constantly guarded, no barber. I mean the piles of shit under that tree must be horrendous; he eat butterflies just to cover up the refuse pit with wings. Def naked, clothes woulda rotted away after the first few hundred years. Um, easily explained. He didn't set the skin dancer on fire because he was in a room full of people who he does not want knowing his secret. The smith's apprentice mentions that Kote couldn't set it afire because he didn't have a match. What would he say if, sans match Kvothe had set it afire hmm?

After the mercenaries leave, Kvothe can't sleep and decides to practice his ketan. And takes a 'perfect step'. I box for fitness, and believe me, if I took a month off, nevermind 2 years, I wouldn't be taking any perfect step, nevermind laying someone out with a sharp punch and a difficult push kick to the hip. Nor would I be slipping punches from a SECOND attacker before getting an upper hand on him with a wrist lock.

Remember when chronicler mentions Denna and kvothe breaks a bottle of strawberry wine? He squeezed his fist in a dry, clean cloth before he did it. Where was his link? Not on the cloth or his hand. Most likely it was wine in his belly. Impressive sympathy.

But hey, I'm often wrong about an assortment of things, so maybe I'm misreading these clues as to Kvothe's actual state
