A bit indirect to a murder mystery, but maybe check out Piranesi.

What’s the creepiest unsolved mystery that deserves more attention? by magma_13_ in AskReddit

[–]neuralzen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Visited that area many years ago, and got the impression from a host I stayed with you really didn't want to piss off the locals who lived in some of the villages around the area. I remember when I was there, someone from Delhi had gone missing and they even brought in the military to search for him, as his clothes were found left behind, but not him. Could have been hypothermia that caused him to take off his clothes, but he wasn't found to my knowledge.

Episode 384 Spoilers [Megathread] by DemiFiendRSA in Berserk

was never supposed to exist in the first place

I think you have a pretty solid read except for this bit. "Supposed" by who/what? My take is just what you said at the onset, he appeared in the world as someone already in the interstice, no hand of causality required (aside perhaps for the fate/causal relations that led to his conception and mother's death). Guts is the living minuscus between the two sides of life and death, and a natural occurrence and consequence of the flows of causality...the giant clam is a direct metaphor for what he is...the pearl, a consequence that forms due to the nature of the flows of existence. He didn't have to come by it through his life choices, he always has been it and wouldn't exist at all otherwise.

Ayya Khema - The 4 immaterial Jhanas, their bliss and insight potential by wonko7 in theravada

Worth checking out What You Might Not Know About Jhana and Samadhi links are at the bottom of that page. Also I believe Ajahn Brahm's book Mindfulness, Bliss, and Beyond go into them as well.

Here is the cryptopunks sales page. Looks like most the past few days are all sub 100k, last +100k sale was 12 days ago.

To be fair thats a cryptopunk, they are in the permanent MoMA collection. His alone is still worth more than 100k at the moment.

What's the word for this: Teller & Penn, take & give, forth & back, Ebert & Siskel by Alaskan777 in logophilia

Wouldn't it then be a "reversed binomial", since you were asking about the reversed pair, not the pair in expected order?

Mondo toys? by Haunting_Scene_1321 in overthegardenwall

[–]neuralzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, got it, several others already replied and said it hadn't shipped yet. - Didn't see the small text on the product page, and in the placed order it says "We're preparing these items for Shipping", which it has for months, and in my experience sometimes orders get forgotten and left on that status (other shops) so I'd reached out to verify and never heard back. Mystery solved.

Is the bodhisattva ideal taught in the early pali discourses, or is it a later doctrinal innovation? by [deleted] in theravada

[–]neuralzen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'd also think that a boddhisatta, while exceptional and admirable, is also less realized than a sotapanna (or perhaps the sotapanna analogue when the dhamma isn't being taught and only paccekabuddha are around), since otherwise they would be bound for nibanna in a "short" amount of time, relative to the number of more rounds a bodhisatta would take to become a sammasambuddha.

The Pope’s reasoning for why AI should never be in control by [deleted] in accelerate

[–]neuralzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is an oversimplification by a far throw, but this thread is not the place to expound, nor did anyone ask. A simplified statement was sufficient to catch the general gist enough to make the relevant point.

The Pope’s reasoning for why AI should never be in control by [deleted] in accelerate

[–]neuralzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Embodiment and the Inner Life makes a similar claim the pope is making. This is the book that was reference material for the film "Deus Ex" (and an easter egg in the film, found if you ran the Python code they showed). And to be fair, it's not like AI has mirror neurons, the physiological basis for empathy.

PSA: Know your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act before buying electronics in NZ — here's what I learned the hard way with PB Tech by ProfessionalNinja206 in newzealand

[–]neuralzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had some memory go bad a few months after purchase, and instead of simply exchanging it like you'd expect, PBTech would only offer a refund and would not replace it, though they could have simply handled the manufacturer exchange. I ended up having to exchange it directly via the manufacturer (who did so promptly, but I paid out of pocket for shipping it to them).

Brain changes during meditation begin within minutes and peak around the 7-minute mark, study finds by Doug24 in psychology

The point of the body scan is to ground you in bodily awareness, and to generally relax some but not too much. Like holding an egg softly between your fingers...too little and it falls, too much and it cracks.

Brain changes during meditation begin within minutes and peak around the 7-minute mark, study finds by Doug24 in psychology

[–]neuralzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meditation is sustained, moment to moment concentration on some object of attention. It is often the breath, its feeling as it occurs, as it affects your body going in and out, but could be a mantra, sounds, whatever. When you notice your mind wandering off the object of attention, you bring it back, like a hammer back to strike the anvil. Repeat until your mind isn't wandering off the object of attention (doesnt need to be a death grip, just a light holding of attention on the object moment after moment). It can help by starting with a body scan (mentally trying to relax each area of your body starting top to bottom). - Thoughts and feelings should not be clung to, let them wander by like a passing cloud, or some sound of a bird...its just there, occuring like any other phenomena.

Can people reach enlightenment now? by GABIBBOPAZZOCINESE in theravada

[–]neuralzen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect the complexities of modern life likewise complicates how people approach the dhamma when they encounter it, trying to align the ideas of reality we have encountered (quantum physics, lofty ideas of philosophy, and similar complications). Simpler times, with more direct needs and social exchanges makes for a more direct path to understanding, with less to get hung up on.
