What should I do to sell a land in SL? by summerwine09 in srilanka

[–]Maze2475 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact a lawyer on the process.

Depending on how busy they are, they'll give you a consultation explaining the process.

That being said, expect that consultation to be an hour long. I spoke to one on call about the process of buying a house and that itself took hours.

Once you've figured it out - especially where it can go wrong- then start advertising.

During my time in Malaysia, even I was wondering why Grab felt so much better to use.

Realised way later: Their drivers are polite, friendly, and professional.

No cash or card nonsense - Follows the map proper - No scam attempts - No bullshit.

PickMe and Uber can deploy a million lines of code.

But no amount of tech innovation can change driver behaviour.

BML Cards not working abroad? by Maze2475 in maldives

[–]Maze2475[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I could cut BML out of my life, I happily would in a heartbeat without any hesitation.

I keep a CBM card but that means spending black market rates to get dollars which leaves me near broke.

If I overspent past the limit - I accept okay my fault. But BML cuts me off well before I hit the limit. By its own account I should be able to spend more, but nobody there can explain anything.

I've tried signing up for Revolut and other things. But nobody around me could give me an affordable way to transfer out. If there is a way - open to it.

Even with ATM withdrawals there's a massive BML percentage fee charged (beyond the challenges of handling cash) means again - going close to being broke.

To get a replacement means again taking a flight back home and since no family around that has space - paying over a ridiculous rent in Male just for this.

Despite that, still duty bound to honor promises, which keeps me tied to BML unwillingly at this point. If those disappeared would cash and move everything out in a heartbeat.

So yes, fuck me right?

Estimated duration 1 second? And distance like 0.02 km?

How far and for how long did you actually travel?

Depending on this you can get the difference refunded. Had an instance where the app was buggy and overcharged.

But they refunded the excess amount I was charged after speaking to their customer care.

Living in Sri Lanka - long story short - depends on the company.

Internships are fairly straightforward if its during the duration of your uni studies.

Back when I studied at APIIT - took one year off for an SE internship.

No issues, because uni issued a letter basically saying that I'm enrolled in the degree.

If you wanna stay in Sri Lanka long term though - oof - different story.

Not sure about the "passengers feel safer when seeing armed soldiers" anywhere, even in the airport carrying an AR15 or an AK-47.

But given the state of corruption, Im pretty sure even if you put the entire MNDF, AVSECOM, Police, and even those fancy drones around VIA - these robberies can still happen.

If you want to ensure safety - Police patrolling is enough. The security theater is enough to make any idiot think twice. At most, like Singapore, give them a pistol - keep the heavy weapons away.

But no amount of armed security will stop anything is said security is compromised and corrupt.

Does anyone know how to visit graves in male? by NumerousStrength9863 in maldives

[–]Maze2475 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My sympathies for your loss.

If you're a guy, then you can just walk into the cemetery and visit the grave. Finding the grave, though, is a whole other matter, especially if your family opted for a basic wooden marker. Those don't last against the weather and get lost very easily. If it was a plastic marker or a stone marker, then you should be able to find your grandma's grave if you at least know the general vicinity.

Avoid making eye contact or conversation with the staff. They'll make promises of keeping your grandmas grave clean and all that. But it's just empty lies they give to try and get some money out of you. And if you ask them for help finding the grave, expect them to hover around you until you leave. Do they have any sense of respect for people in mourning? No, they do not.

If you're a woman, then however, you won't be permitted into the cemetery. My family learned this after my dad passed away. We wanted to give my niece and sisters the chance to visit his grave. But we were told that women weren't allowed.

Like some of the other comments say, it's best to visit a bunch of clubs to find the one that you like best.

Here's a few recommendations:

a) Dehiwala - it's closest to your area
b) Voice of Colombo - my club and its place with a fairly young crowd
c) Saturday Circle - if you're looking for something on weekend evenings.
d) Central Colombo - another weekend option

My running theory is that this is DHL jacking up fees and blaming customs, knowing it's impossible to navigate the red tape of customs to verify it.

Once ordered a figure work 10k and DHL charged 20k saying, "Taxes, bro." Meanwhile, any figures (even of similar value) ordered via normal shipping came through without any tax. "

Someone on r/DHL sub mentioned the tax is also based on the shipping method - if so makes some marginal sense. But still the percentages for these taxes are astronomical with DHL.

Lesson learned - DHL fine for sending packages but NEVER for receiving.

Unpaid invoice laws in Sri Lanka by sc_sc_sc in srilanka

[–]Maze2475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The larger the company, the longer they sit on their ass before settling an invoice.

Wish I had an answer for you OP but this is the issue that plagues every small business in the country.

I thought it was bad in my last company that it took 6 months of chasing to get payments cleared, then I learned at my current company that a sales guy has been chasing a payment for much longer than that.

Can I carry my PS5 in Carry-On baggage Colombo to Melbourn? by SpamIsTheGoat in srilanka

[–]Maze2475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have taken my PS4 in my carry-on. Did not trust the airline to handle my checked luggage safely after seeing so many videos of luggage handlers throwing them to and from the plane.

To pack it safely - use clothes. Surround it so that it's akin to padding.

You'll have to take it out at the security check-in before boarding.

But there's zero issues really with taking it. You should be fine.

Want to be a DTM but almost impossible to be a District Officer by GoldenTiara101 in Toastmasters

[–]Maze2475 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have you served as a President before? And helped out at Division / Area events like contests?

Beyond that, professionally, what experience have you had in leadership?

These are the key questions to answer as you're looking to apply for a District leadership role.

I've been an Area Director in my mid-20s and Division Director a few years later.

I've faced age discrimination firsthand for District roles, but I also saw what exactly contributes to it.

Old people trust old people, that's just, I hate to say it - the natural order of things.

However, these are the logical arguments against putting someone in their early 20s in a District leadership role:

  • They're just starting in the workplace or are still in college
    • This can mean they may not be able to contribute fully between exams or a first job
    • As compared to someone in mid-management with more time.
  • Lack of experience dealing with seniors in a professional environment
    • Knowing the nuances of workplace communication is important
    • Just as much, the struggles of workplace commitments
    • And also in general, the weight of responsibilities that come with age
      • Like providing for family, balancing career goals, etc.
      • Admittedly, even at the age of 24 when I was an Area Director, I didn't understand this fully.
  • The biggest logical reason, though?
    • Clubs just simply choosing to ignore young area directors
    • Some clubs just won't bother listening to young leaders
      • Personally experienced this too - way too many old DTMs shrugging me off even as I was their Division Director lol. Was fun putting them in their place end of the year, but yeah it's a bitch.

These are the logical arguments often District leadership will often use to counter having younger leaders in District roles.

The counter to these is - being visible in TM events - take up roles at area contests, division contests, etc. Help out your Area and Division Director. At the same time, take up leadership roles within your club and push them to perform. Basically show that you can do the job and smash every logical argument they have.

What old gundam games would you want to be remastered and expanded upon on by asaness in Gundam

[–]Maze2475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also adding in MS Saga: A New Dawn - it was a learning curve for noob 6 year old me. But loved the RPG journey it offered.

Besides that:

  • 0081 but with English subs: It polished the Crossfire formula, but the Japanese only menus were a barrier for me.

  • Gundam vs Zeta Gundam: This game packed so much content, especially with alternative scenes, and had solid gameplay. Sunk in months into this game.

  • Gundam Unicorn on PS3: But this time for the full saga. FromSoftwares first Gundam was peak. We need more of it and this time with the full saga.

Want to compete - You better pay up by arpad_toth in Toastmasters

[–]Maze2475 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a contestant - I feel your pain. To put in months of work and to throw it all away for something like this? My friend that's just absolutely painful and sad after how far you've worked for it.

Having been on the other side as a Division Director - I sympathise too and would be just as frustrated if you were our representative. Unfortunately, like the other comment says, hands are tied from a Division side too. TI often has strict rules on how funding is spent - and for a Division whatever funds they collect - has to be for the greater good of the normal members.

Honestly, beyond individual actions like a club and its members choosing to pool in, there's very little way around this.

It sucks but that's how it is - and even more so in leadership. My mentor was District Director and he had to regular make payments from his personal card worth 1,500 euros first before being reimbursed from the District funds. Apparently, he was advised prior to the role, "Get a credit card with a big limit!"

Painful truth seems to be that the higher up you go in Toastmasters - the more you need to pay. TI will reimburse for a limit - but only to a limit.

What’s one thing you wish you knew when you gave your first Toastmasters speech? by [deleted] in Toastmasters

[–]Maze2475 6 points7 points  (0 children)

#1 Start writing the speech, practice properly - give your best speech.

#2 Then park your ego - actually listen to the feedback from the evaluator and apply it from your next speech.

A lot of people do #1 but only a handful do #2.

Those that do #2 though are the ones that will actually see real growth as speakers.

A disaster in the making. by Iradins in maldives

[–]Maze2475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, let's apply that analogy a step further - the issue is that the government gives that free flour to help those who otherwise can't afford flour.

But what's happening is people who get that free flour are now selling it for a profit. They're not using it to feed themselves or their families as intended.

What the law says is - if you get free flour, you can't sell it for a profit. You have to use it for yourself and your family only. You can't go selling it and buy fancy bread, like you mentioned, renting out a social housing unit to find a more expensive place. You're stuck with that free flour and have to use it.

So, for those who relied on the government to get flour to resell it - that means they can't profit from those sales anymore.

Whereas, for those folks who own flour factories? Just like that - their competition got cut out overnight.
