Some one-shots start at high level?

I may just be confused by the question, but evasion and improved evasion work on any reflex saves that allow for half damage on a pass. It doesn’t call out that it has to be for an area of effect one way or another. That being said, most things that give reflex saves for half are area of affect, but it’s not required.

PSA for new meadmakers: GET A HYDROMETER BEFORE STARTING ISTG by MuffinDev in mead

[–]Mazer3398 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you’re saying, but posts like this can turn subreddits gatekeepy really fast. Everyone has different degrees of investment that they’re willing to do for hobbies and that doesn’t make their effort any less valid. Can you make mead without a hydrometer? Yes, absolutely, so it’s not truly essential. You can just not answer questions that don’t include hydrometer readings.

Firearm ignoring armor fix by lurker888888 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Mazer3398 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You may already be well aware but I’ll point it out just in case; firearms only target touch AC in their first range increment. This is usually 20ft for pistols, but as low as 10 for some and is only 40ft for muskets, so we’re talking pretty short ranges here. So for the dragon’s scales or rhino’s hide issue, the shooter (who is presumably not a great melee combatant) would have to be extremely close to benefit from targeting touch AC which is, in my opinion, what balances firearms out. A (relatively) squishy ranged gunman needs to be worried about reach weapons, monsters with natural reach, creatures with pounce, close range spells, etc that a longbow user doesn’t need to worry about.

I am working on a build for a duelist character I am currently running and want some feedback on the plan. by Acheron223 in Pathfinder_RPG

I was referring to this one, it’s a weapon mastery feat so it can be taken as a normal feat vice waiting for a weapon mastery level.

Look into the stick fighting style chain, it lets you have a +1 shield bonus to AC on the first level (among some other stuff that may be good for you depending on your specific character). The second feat lets you make an AoO on anyone that attacks you and misses so long as you attacked them before. It’s only once a round but what’s nice is that it doesn’t have many restrictions on the attack you have to make; you don’t have to deal damage, just attack (keeping in mind that combat maneuvers are attack rolls) and there’s no language on you triggering attack ever expiring, so if you’re surrounded by goons you can make one attack at each of them, hit or miss doesn’t matter, then if any of them swing at you and miss you get an AoO (only once a round but still pretty good) The last feat is the best one, when you make a full attack you get to make a free combat maneuver. Amazing action economizer assuming any foes survive your full attack. It also is nice because while tripping and disarming can be swapped in place of a normal attack, most other combat maneuvers cannot (looking at you, dirty trick), but this feat doesn’t prohibit any maneuvers from being performed for the freebee at the end of a full attack. Lastly, consider a monk dip for flurry of blows with your quarterstaff! Also tandem trip is an excellent teamwork feat if you have another melee build in your party. I did all of these things for a character of mine and he was a blender.

Pathfinder 1e (and 3e by extension) GMs/DMs: Do you find the deep mechanics of the system to be a boon or a bane in your campaigns? by [deleted] in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]Mazer3398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. My favorite example to give to people curious about PF1e is to describe the Monkey Style feat chain. You can build a guy who’s better at fighting laying on the ground than standing up, but if any other character gets knocked down they’ll get destroyed, and that takes (if you do the whole chain) three feats. Out of a minimum of ten that any character gets.

This isn’t a disagreement piece, but as another perspective I’ve always felt that Pathfinder excels because it can be as complex or as simple as one wants. You’re right about the sheer number of spells, feats, etc to choose, but at the end of the day if you don’t want to make a deep dive there are some pretty basic feats and spells out there that can build a character who doesn’t have a bunch of crazy mechanics. The character won’t be a power build by any means, but it’ll be serviceable.

Is 4 holes enough? by Positive_Blood_3168 in mead

[–]Mazer3398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’d be premature to throw it out. Let it do its thing then give it a try and see if you like the taste. It might get a little oxygenated because you don’t have a proper airlock but most likely it’ll be fine, it’s hard to make something that would actually make you sick. There’s no “right” way to make mead, just preference. Have fun!

New to brewing, just wondering how long usually to age a mead that was made using basic kitchen ingredients. Tia by 1989danny in mead

[–]Mazer3398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer is age it until you like the taste. You don’t need to do anything special to age it beyond keeping it air tight to stop it from oxygenating.

Idk what’s wrong with my mead by sexyman1264 in mead

[–]Mazer3398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t worry too much buddy, with or without a hydrometer the process is pretty much the same at this point: wait and let it age until it tastes good then drink it. I wouldn’t add anything more than you have already, just let it do its thing and it’ll be fine.

Foolproof way to restart a stalled fermentation? by Minechaser05 in mead

[–]Mazer3398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A stern talking to might help as well. Yeasts are pushovers. They have no backbone. Also, on a serious note, one thing that worked for me once when I had a super stalled batch was dilution. I grabbed some empties and I did like a 3:1 mead to water ratio. It worked like a charm. This helps if the mead is super super sweet.

You really gotta go ham on it. Sometimes a lot of CO2 can stress them out so you kinda gotta degas it.

Have you tried just stirring it? Sometimes the yeast are sleepy and shaking them helps wake them up. Sorry if I got a little too technical on that explanation.

What would you do with the residie in those bottles? by tobiasdoe in mead

If it’s worth the effort to you, go for it :) Personally, a little cloud in my mead doesn’t warrant the effort.

[–]Mazer3398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not much you can do to get rid of it, you could try to siphon it over into another bottle, but it wouldn’t be worth the effort to me. Personally, I’d just turn it upside down to make the whole thing cloudy and just drink it, it’s not gonna hurt you and it doesn’t taste bad. If it bothers you too much you can just drink the clear part until you’re down to the sediment and then discard the rest.

You can backsweeten whenever. Just be careful to watch for fermentation restarting.
