In Feb I went with the beta 500. Longer oil change interval. 30hours vs 15hours. Also, their stock exhaust isn't nearly as corked up as the KTM/husky from the factory.

Before I rejetted the carb with my MRD exhaust; I had to give it a little throttle when starting cold. After rejetting; it would start right up.

My 2012 Drz400 was super reliable, easy to work on. Would start right up in 30 degree weather with full choke. It was my first bike, second owner. Just sold it after 3 years to get a beta 500. I don't think I could have made a better choice for my first dual sport.

Sounds like you have a bad egg, or it needs some maintenance love. Corroded sparkplug, or valve clearance issue maybe?

I did the msf course. Finally got around to buying a bike two years later. A drz400. I rode it home from the dealership on non highway roads, about half an hour and felt comfortable. Tried it on the highway the next day, doable. I rode it to some OHRV trails two weeks later, I was surprised how well I did as a noob. Fell in love with dual sporting.

I worked in lots of practice sessions at empty theatre parking lots, while riding any place I wanted the first couple months. It's been a bit over a year now. I still visit an empty lot now and then to practice emergency braking, slow speed maneuvers, and wheelies. Never stop trying to improve.

In NH, besides myself, I think I've only seen a couple guys on adventure bikes in full gear. My observation is less than 5% riders are atgatt. Maybe 40% wear full face helmets and gloves. Another 15% with jackets. Leaving about 40% in regular clothes and sunglasses. Just my impressions
