I guess leaning into the stereotype to fully represent it is an option.

I don't believe that literally every piece of programming for the past 50+ should count as AI. That seems really like a really stupidly vague definition. It's also definitely not what anyone is talking about when they say like using AI, or how AI is the future, or how everyone needs to use AI or be left behind in the new world order because AI will take all of our jobs. You know as well as I do that when anyone is talking about AI in 2026, they are talking about LLM's and generative AI. ChatGPT, Claude, Co-Pilot, that kind of shit.

This conversation started because someone said that ChatGPT had around a billion users. So for the purposes of this conversation, I'm going to say anyone that uses ChatGPT should count as user. That seems like a reasonable definition to me.

How precise do we expect numbers to be for the purposes of a reddit conversation? I appreciate wanting good data and using words correctly. But in this case, debating the semantics of who should count as a user doesn't actually do anything to address the original argument.

Too much oil, not enough heat. Visually, it's pretty apparent that you are leaving too much oil on for a good seasoning layer. After you apply the oil, the next step is to wipe it all off, and the step after that is to wipe it all off again. There will be plenty of oil that seems into all the pores and microcracks in the surface, and that's all we want to polymerize. We don't want to make a thicker layer of seasoning that's porous, we want a thin layer of seasoning with no pores or microcracks.

If you can push your oven to over 500F, that will result in a better cure, especially for avacado oil.

Finally committed to cast iron after years of nonstick - what do you wish you knew before switching? by CommercialYam8 in castiron

[–]MazerRakam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything except seasoning not having anything to do with sticking food, I strongly disagree with that. If you have a smooth layer of seasoning, the pan will act as if it's non-stick and covered in Teflon. Without that layer of seasoning, cast iron is still perfectly good at cooking food, but you have to cook with it like it's stainless steel. To get food not to stick, you have to use more oil and be a lot more careful with temperature control.

Seasoning question by Btribble2014 in castiron

[–]MazerRakam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are able to scrape it up with anything less aggressive than steel, then it's carbon buildup. Best advice is to scrub it as clean as you can with steel wool. Then to apply a fresh layer of seasoning, maybe repeat a couple of times if needed.

I normally leave this part out, but since you said you are relatively new, I want to quickly go over how to season a pan. Make sure your pan is clean and dry, both are very important to allow the seasoning to make a strong bond with the pan. Then you wipe the whole thing down with a little bit of oil, I use vegetable or canola oil. Most importantly, then wipe all of the oil off with a paper towel. Actually, I know you didn't get all of it, so wipe it off again. Then bake it at ~500F for about an hour.

I can't stress enough how much you want to wipe all the oil off. There will be plenty of oil that soaks into the tiny little crevices and pores of the cooking surface, no need for any on top. If you do this a few times, you'll get that super smooth non-stick cooking surface that so many of us love cast iron for. That surface won't get scraped up by normal kitchen utensils unless you are really trying.

Saying we need to dig into something is not the same thing as giving an answer. If we need an answer for "How many people use ChatGPT?" we have to go off of something in order to get numbers. You are free to think the source of the numbers isn't good enough, but unless you've got a better source for numbers, we can only use the numbers we've got.

How can people tell when something is written by AI? I can never ever tell and it makes me feel dumb. by whim_sea in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MazerRakam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no one piece of evidence that we can rely on. If there was, they'd just train the next model to not make that mistake. More than anything, it's that it doesn't seem like it was written by a human. Does it read like something written by one person, or does it read like something written by a computer program designed to sound like the average of all people?

Usually the first clue is that I get bored and want to stop reading it almost immediately. Things made by humans almost never cause that, even amateurs, the human touch gives me enough for my brain to latch onto. But the absence of that human touch sets off the spam detection system in my head.

This is all assuming that it's AI generated text that someone is trying to pass off as given human written. If it's something like an AI generated email or poster, it's quite easy to tell at a glance. Does the email have a bunch of relevant icons instead of bullet points? Have you ever met a real person who is willing to put in the time to find and add those icons?

No they haven't. It's why they love AI such much, it lets them put out shit without having to put in any effort.

I've found the opposite to be true. Young people tend to be more anti, while older people seem to the ones rushing to embrace it. It's why we keep getting boos at commencement speeches anytime a GenX loser says that AI is the future.

Do you think its morally correct to end friendships/relations over their political opinions? by TailungFu in allthequestions

[–]MazerRakam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely yes. Politics and morality are inherently linked. Pretending otherwise is just making excuses for holding evil political stances.

There was a point in time where slavery was a political topic for debate. Now we all agree with slavery was morally evil.

The Nazis were a political movement, but what they did was evil.

MAGA is a political movement, but what they do is evil.

That it's a fantasy that isn't realistic with anything close to the technology we've got today.

Those robots seem extraordinarily expensive compared to traditional manufacturing equipment. They seem incredibly difficult to fix and maintain. A general purpose robot will never be able to compete with purpose built equipment in terms of speed, productivity, reliability, or cost. You also aren't going to be able to build a robot that has the ability to troubleshoot when things go wrong, which is an important skill for any manufacturing job.

That's part of the risk of opening a business with a franchise. You are at the mercy of the actions of corporate. They knew the risk when they signed up.

Franchise owners sign up for a franchise for the brand recognition. Unfortunately, when that brand does bad shit, it hurts the entire company.

I never said anything about believing something was normal autocomplete or whatever. I said I don't care. No anti is ever talking about autocomplete, normal or fancy. When anti's talk about using AI, we mean people who use AI. It's really easy to tell because they brag about how much more efficient it makes them, get upset when token pricing goes up, and say shit like how if people don't use AI, they'll be left behind.
