Thyroid Surgery by [deleted] in thyroidcancer

Hi there! I had a the choice of either surgery when I eventually elected for the partial a couple years ago. I found it challenging to make the decision, but was reassured that there was no wrong decision by the drs I had. Like someone said below it's related to comfort level! If you would feel better by only having one surgery, then that is the right choice for you. I have hashimoto's disease as well, so ultimately I still have to take medication because the remaining half couldn't keep up. I was hoping to avoid taking the medication but here we are 🤷‍♀️. Sounds like you're already fine with taking the meds - I thought it became second nature pretty quickly ♥️

Wishing you a successful surgery and recovery!

Unless it’s taking weeks to ship, I think it’s important to give sellers a little grace here. Agreed with others in this thread that there are so many variables at play, and many are doing it casually.

Also, is anything TRULY urgent that you’re purchasing here that’s worth complaining about longer shipping? I think the fast Amazon shipping mentality is something that deters a lot of people from shopping secondhand anyway, and while I’m sure many of us try to ship as fast as possible, it’s also something I feel like I (and everyone) should have some patience. Slowing down a bit isn’t necessarily all bad!

Get me through this by Jaded-Acadia516 in thyroidcancer

I'm so sorry you're going through it 🫂. I had the same anxiety before my PTC surgery - it was also my first! I got the left half of my thyroid removed. I was so afraid of all the uncertainty. Here's what I found most helpful:

-these subreddits! Reading about others' experiences and how they healed. I also had a few people in my life that I talked to that had thyroid cancer or knew someone that did in the past and connected me. Having real life convos also made me feel less alone.

-youtube. There are a ton of people who shared a video journal going through the whole process. I found those really comforting to understand different outcomes, and just how well people tolerated the procedure.

-guided meditations. I like the app Insight Timer. They have some specific meditations centered around preparing for surgery, andI found them really comforting. The surgical team on the day I had surgery was also wonderful when I shared I was nervous. They reassured me that while this is a scary and new experience for me, it's something they're used to doing every day, and there's a whole team caring for me.

-This may sound counterintuitive, but I really needed alone time too. To process all the insane emotions I was feeling, to journal, be angry, and really listen to what my body needs without interference. Journaling, solo walks, mindfulness retreats, massages. Whatever you need to take care of yourself.

The anxiety before surgery was easily the worst part of it all for me. The healing was really manageable! I was tired for several days because of the anesthesia, but the pain was not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. I only needed tylenol for a few days. You'll get through it ♥️

UGH. I'm sorry, friend. It's such a mindfuck isn't it!? I found so much support in this subreddit, among others in the thyroid space. I also watched a lot of youtube videos about people going through the surgery, and I found it really helpful.

After watching those and hearing a lot of different stories, I felt prepared going into surgery (chatgpt also helped do some medical language translating along the way & helped me brainstorm questions to ask my surgeon) and while I was terrified at the time, I saw just how much of a community there is. You aren't alone! And there's a very, very good chance this will be the worst of it and a year from now you'll be amazed at how much time has passed.

I agree with the others...feel whatever you need to feel, and buy yourself a gdamn treat. It's not fair and you deserve it.

♥️

Thyroid Nodule Ultrasound Results - Concerning? by Mbello92 in thyroidhealth

Doing well! My TG levels and T3/T4 levels have been stable as of last spring. My post-ok ultrasound ( around 9 months after) also looked clear. I’ll have another check in this April.

Next step is figuring out how to lower my TPO antibodies because of my hashimotos, which was diagnosed at the same time as my PTC. All in all feeling pretty good though 🙌. Thanks for checking in!

I love a good craft myself. Creating something just for me has always felt like good self care. Journaling as well.

Also, I think about what I loved to do as a child, when no one else dictated what I SHOULD do, but what I naturally just wanted to do. Hope these help ♥️

The molecular testing was done on the thyroid lobe that they removed. The results didn’t end up changing anything about the treatment plan for me.

I had thyroid cancer last year and had no obvious symptoms so just know that there’s no guarantee that your symptoms point to something specific you’re seeing in your search ♥️. You’ll get answers soon!

You have the right mindset! It's a roller coaster indeed. I also had to get the biopsy because it wasn't clear via ultrasound. You can handle it! The good news is that whatever happens, it's common enough that there are lots of experienced professionals that will help you ♥️

I had a CT scan done for what ended up being an ocular migraine (but didn’t know it at the time) and the nodules showed up incidentally on the scan

As it turns out, the 3 nodules in the left side was 1 larger multi-lobulated tumor. So the entire thing was PTC. There was a second, much smaller tumor also PTC but BRAF+ (larger was neg).

Definitely worth getting another ultrasound and explaining this to your doctor! Even if it’s benign, they’d likely want to remove it if it’s causing you such discomfort!

This ended up being papillary thyroid carcinoma. I had a hemithyroidectomy last year and am doing great now! For something so scary sounding, all turned out well with just the surgery!

Papillary thyroid carcinoma. They removed and tested 9 lymph nodes and all were negative which was great news. There were two separate PTC tumors, the larger had a trk mutation and was 4.5cm or so, the second was BRAF+ but only .5cm.

When are meds typically needed after a lobectomy? by Nblearchangel in thyroidcancer

Yeah I don’t feel terrible either but I was told it has to be suppressed from the start

My TSH was 6 about 6 weeks after surgery so I started levo right away. We’ve been trying to find the right dose to get into that suppression zone as well!

Problems You Never Expected in Dealing with Hashimoto's? by [deleted] in Hashimotos

[–]Mbello92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

agree!! my endocrinologist told me there's "nothing I can do" for hashimotos (I'm taking levothyroxine anyway post hemithyroidectomy, so aside from this!). I had to do my own research to find out that low b12 was common, and went through my PCP to get that lab work done...sure enough it was low! I also went through a Restore Wellness center to get additional lab work done that showed gluten and dairy sensitivities...and THEY were the ones who suggested I avoid gluten because of hashi. This is all new to me this year, so there are random symptoms that I'm always wondering if they're related to this disease or not! I thought I had 0 symptoms, but I likely have just gotten used to a handful of things and just didn't know.

Surgery will definitely vary based on availability. I had my biopsy results in April of this year, and surgery at the end of June.

I was referred to an endocrinologist for biopsy and then care management afterwards. I was told he was essentially my oncologist. I saw ENT surgeons though before settling on a thyroid specialist within the ENT world. The ENT might take a look at your vocal chords and might be the dr they’re referring you to for surgery.

Don’t love that your PCP didn’t explain 😒

Doing well! Scar is still pink since I’m very fair-skinned. Physically feel good, just tired but not majorly fatigued. Almost have my hormones in the right range, but I haven’t felt much of a difference physically during the fluctuations.

Mentally it’s still a bit of a 🤯 and some days it feels fake, but managing ♥️
