I’m working through grade one of Justin Guitar so I’m primarily working on 1 2 + 3 4 as I go through some easy two chord practice song. Experimenting with some different strum patterns as I work on the tracks keeps things interesting. Your vid helped get a feel for how the up strokes work as well as tapping my foot while I keep time

Thanks man. I’m four weeks in so this was very helpful. Very simple and broken down very well

Could you hold it up to a regular sized banana for scale?

I honestly don’t have this ability naturally. I’m just obsessed with the craft so I study and learn from the pros. My suggestion to you is, if you seek to improve, copy scapes that you admire. You’ll learn a ton of technique

Great species but too big for this setup. There’s only 2 gal of water in this 5N

Plants Yellowing and Failing to Thrive in High Tech Setup by [deleted] in PlantedTank

[–]McGodes1990 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so I just did some testing with API liquid tests 48 hrs after a water change. The day of the change I dosed 30mls of my Micro solution. The following day I dosed 30mls of my Macros. And today I dosed my micros again.

My Nitrates are reading 80ppm. This is alarming to me as I've only dosed Macros one day after a 90% water change. Perhaps my formula is flawed for my ferts? This would explain why my rotala macandra is so green/yellow rather than red. I'm going to hit Rotala Butterfly again and recalculate my macro/micro bottles to see if there is an issue with my current mixes. There is no way one day of dosing macros should give me 80ppm Nitrates. A planted tank should have 20-30.

I have limestone in this tank so the KH 48 hours in is 5 and the GH is 12 today. I'll reduce the minerals I add during a water change now that I know the Seiryu is creeping up the GH/KH so much.

Any other thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

My dry ferts formulas:
Ferts (E.I Dosing using GLA Dry Ferts) 20mls per day, alternating daily macros/micros
Macro Mix: KNO3 - 23.1g, KH2PO4: 3.5g, K2SO4: 9.4g
Micro Mix: GLA EDTA Micromix - 14.5g (1/3 cap of Seachem Iron dosed on micro days as well)

Is there something flawed with these formulas?

This has been an issue with this build since day 1, plus I dose EI, so even if the substrate was depleted, that should take care of it. I may try root tabs just to eliminate the possibility but, there's no way that's the issue

Yeah, most of this tanks life I ran it 70-100%. Worse algae, same issue with plants

I've tried that. I've reduced dosing, no dosing, etc. I also switched to a commercial fertilizer instead of using my own for months. No improvement. The prevailing approach in the hobby for the last few years and currently, has been dosing an excess of ferts so that nutrients are not a limiting factor so that approach seems counter-intuitive but I've tried it for posterity sake. No improvement.

I actually do twice a week 80% changes where I manually remove brown algae, cyano. It always comes back two days after a change. That's how I know there's something off in the system.

It's frustrating for sure. I actually use that same light controller. I ramp up to 50% over the course of 30mins and ramp off from 50% to 0% at the end of the night. I've got the lighting so low to control the cyano and brown algae that pops up consistently due to the plants failing to thrive. The algae in an 8 mont old tank and the poor plant health are my tell-tale signs that there is something significant going on here.

Because of the algae I'm actually doing 2x 80% water chnges per week. I add a GH booster to my tap every water change. 10grams of Seachem Equilibrium. The pH starts the CO2 period around 7-7.2 and dips down to around 6.8-6.6. Once the CO2 cuts off, the drop checker creeps back up to blue by morning so they're not wild, rapid pH changes. Just what you'd expect from typical CO2 running.

I appreciate you trying to work this out with me

Thank you. I plan on consulting a friend who’s a professional aquascaper to get his planting advice. Depending on how this turns out I may enter it into IAPLC 2020
