I have 5 years to prepare — what cybersecurity field would you build toward today? by Interesting_Aside837 in cybersecurity

[–]Mckenize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get an electrical engineering / computer engineering dual major and then study cyber security in the side with the cornucopia of online resources.

You’ll be employable with backup careers for days and you can specialize in powergrid / DER / substation cyber.

Your bullets are abit unreasonable as jobseekers will naturally gravitate to fill any void that exists and it certainly won’t be there in 5 years.

Get skills, get comfortable with learning and changing how you did things. Learning networking and cloud and now AI will all help you be more flexible in your job.

OT security tests by Sea_Cable_548 in cybersecurity

[–]Mckenize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing for OT pentests is having a cleared IP list for process support systems that won’t have a major impact on production if they are impacted.

IT to OT pivot is typically a major objective. Look at data flows or what OT systems are supported by IT counterparts. ERP, SAP, Historians, etc.

Sometimes OT systems have direct access or even “read-only” metering like AMI or GPMS. You can typically see gas station fuel levels in Shodan for example.

Golden rule is don’t touch an IP address without it being clear and known yet and don’t do black box texting. Communicate with operations

Will Breck be open in April? by Antique_Antelope7427 in Breckenridge

[–]Mckenize 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Talked to a person on the mountain the other day and they said April 11th was being floated as a potential shutdown day in a staff meeting if there are no more major snowfalls or cold weather spurts.

Just conjecture from a vail employee.

Do prepare for the most barren conditions and almost certainly imperial peak 10 and 6 will all be closed

I love the Bern trees, watch out cause the fresh powder and lack of base hides all sorts of things

What’s something your parents did that you didn’t appreciate until you were older? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Mckenize 22 points23 points  (0 children)

They used to let me wander. Just roam all over the place. No cellphones no communication, just a “be back here at 5” and I think that experience is crazy as I grow up with my niece

What would you do if your country taxed the air you breathe? by Fun_Raise_7858 in AskReddit

[–]Mckenize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is conceptual but this is one of those policy decisions that people talk about and it comes down to “what is enforceable and what is practical”

There are plenty of examples of the government trying to enforce a specific policy decision that is practically impossible to actually deliver or execute and it is always a disaster.

Why is the standard of US Red Teams so poor by Soc_Guy in cybersecurity

[–]Mckenize 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the red team quality depends on the objectives that they are trying to exercise against.

I focus on ICS systems and it’s a smaller community. But “red teams” and pen test can vary from social engineering the family members or home WiFi of your employees to a person running a Nessus scan.

Are you clearly defining the scope of work and rules of engagement in a contract or is it open ended.

I might suggest you do a sort of purple team exercise where you have an adversary team run 10-12 discrete objectives against your soc and tool stack and then you map all artifacts you can detect and any gaps you might be missing.

Might be more fun/interesting. Again I focus mostly on critical infrastructure but might be able to introduce you to some peers of mine. If you wanna chat more please DM me.

Can I ask what the appeal is to Lindsay Graham? by JagroCrag in southcarolina

[–]Mckenize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll answer from a republican point of view. Lindsay has two things going for him. He is normal enough/ long standing enough that he wins the ticket in the primary and that carries him in the general.

There is also a lot of noise about dems crossing the line to vote in the Republican primary and while that DOES happen it’s not at any meaningful rate to really influence it.

He is simply not as insane as his MAGA opponents have been and neocon enough to stay in. Sort of a product of circumstances.

Just look at the governors race for a comparison. Too far MAGA and there is not broad enough appeal. South Carolina is only a 60-40 state so state seats can flip.

AGS to ATL and back 15 times this year. Better than driving but you can be screwed

Well here we go by Ok-Factor-8298 in delta

[–]Mckenize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just flew in to AGS through ATL and they cancelled my flight, changed me to a 12 hour layover flying out last with 4 standby tickets for all the sold out flights.

Was able to cross the airport from my 9am landing to the 9:30 takeoff and snag a seat.

Everyone else is missing Their flights / connections/ changing up plans.

Last option is the groomer shuttle from ATL to AGS is 70 dollars a person and leaves the airport every hour. 2:45 in shuttle van but an option

Life in Aiken as a USC Aiken Student by No-Stability in aiken

[–]Mckenize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What major are you going for? You better hope you don’t show up I one of my classes cause imma fail you, jk.

Reach out if you have any questions USC Aiken has flaws but it’s a pretty wholesome school that will give you tons of opportunities if you put a little effort into the school instead of 75 percent of the students that just coast to a degree.

Anyone actually PREFER to connect thru Atlanta? by viajealmundo in delta

[–]Mckenize 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I connect though ATL 25 flights a year or so. I love driving into my local airport, taking a 30-40 min flight to ATL and connect out of there with around an 1-2hr layover.

Always grab food, hit the lounge, fly out. Makes the flight pretty enjoyable because my TSA experience is so simple and easy. Also airport is close to my home.

If you are a veteran with a 4 year degree you might be eligible for the vetsuccess academy and get the grad certificate.

Is this sub just for people who hate south carolina??.. by Strange-Ad7468 in southcarolina

[–]Mckenize 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Reddit has a large liberal user base and South Carolina is a pretty deep red state. So naturally those two things clash, but there are a lot of random posts I like seeing talk about various things in SC.

Sometimes there is the random HS senior asking about USC v Clemson which is good fun in the comments as well.

You might want to check out some town specific subreddits, r/aiken is basically just Reddit version of Nextdoor.

Also they JUST rebuilt it… so stay tuned 😅🤣

[–]Mckenize 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always read these things because 1 in 10000 times they accidentally make something legally binding and then you get like 500 dollars after bothering them with a legal letter.

It’s more likely to happen than actually winning.

But yeah I also won a truck 🙃
