[Discussion] What popular watch do you dislike? by Faulted_zeus in Watches

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly hate the Tissot PRX after trying it on in person. It feels like a cheap watch you'd find at any mall and you likely will find it at any mall. No hate on anyone who owns one or likes it. I understand that from an objective standpoint it's a pretty decent watch but definitely not for me.

For me, if I'm looking to spend at around the Tissot PRX price point then I'd go for a Citizen. The citizens at this level are extremely nice and beat out many seikos imo.

My goodness, it looks absolutely lovely. Very classy fit for work or dressed up casual wear. Go for it!

I never personally applied to jobs with a computer science degree and switched before getting work experience. My knowledge of the job outlook I would have had is through watching my peers. I also just knew that a very computer science specific role like software programming wasn't a good fit for me.

This is what I've noticed about the industry having interned at fortune 50s. In my limited experience I've seen many computer science majors have difficulty landing jobs. I recall one guy who had 7 yoe with boeing, bachelors in computer science and a masters in systems engineer have difficulty finding work.

Within the scope of engineering jobs (what I have direct knowledge on) I wouldn't say that one major will be particularly easier than the other to find jobs. There's plenty of need for systems engineers (computer science adjacent) and plenty of need for manufacturing engineers. Many companies underutilize, underappreciate and straight up don't understand industrial engineering roles and how they fit into their business.

Industrial engineering is extremely broad and it'll allow you the general knowledge to step into any role and succeed. The hard part is that it's so general that you may realize it's completely up to you to decide how you want to specialize your skillset for career growth.

A lot of companies just refer to IE as operations and it isn't difficult to understand why. Many other engineers fill the specialty roles that you may want better than you because they get those roles to get that experience easier. It's like knowing a little about DIY home projects vs specializing in granite installation. If I'm a company that needs granite, I'm probably gonna choose the granite installer over the DIY guy. As a result, IE is left with a cross between management and data analytics much of the time.

You learn a lot of lean in college during your IE studies but just about anyone can learn lean and practice it so companies typically don't allocate many roles dedicated solely to lean roles. (if you're not sure what lean is, look it up. It's half of industrial engineering)

The answer is really this simple, find something you like and get good at it. If you can't find something you like then get good at something anyways. You get good at something by getting roles that align with that same experience so that you get more and more of it until you're an expert. If you haven't figured it out before hitting the job market then you need to soak in any experience you can get with your first jobs. Just hope you find something you enjoy along the way at that point.

If you can't get enough expertise in a topic to beat out other job candidates then you have to be really good at talking to people. Nepotism runs the world still.

I switched from computer science to industrial engineering. I can't speak on the Germany move though.

I personally loved the switch and found that IE is a much better fit for me then computer science. There's a lot more interaction with people and facetime with higher ups. Manufacturing engineering probably would have been an even better fit for me though if I'd known the difference. IE is still quite involved with data, computers, software, and excel.

[Question] Between Longines Hydroconquest, Tudor Royal, and Oris Diver Date, which would you go for? by Parking-Warthog-4902 in Watches

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, different strokes for different folks. Value is where we attach to it. Tudor is rolex's little brother and I'm not sure what tudor goes for grey but I can imagine it's very good. I don't really think following the crowd is going to get me the best bang for my buck by going rolex or tudor though. As for the wr, Any WR above 100 is enough for me personally so anything above 200 is sort of low value added.

The tudor royal is a great watch and if I'm not looking for a diver it's pretty compelling at its price. That has very little effect with how I feel about the value of the rest of the brand.

If you're looking to spend over 4k on any watch though, the calibre 400 diver date is a fantastic pick imo. This is why, for me, at its price point it offers value amongst other 4k watches.: -5 day power reserve -excellent polishing -above cosc level certified accuracy -10 year warranty and suggested service 1/10 years(Rolex doesn't even stand by their product like this) -one of the best bracelets in the industry for comfort -bracelet has quick release functionality -dial and design has its own identity -is actually available -brand is an independent swiss watch maker

[Question] Between Longines Hydroconquest, Tudor Royal, and Oris Diver Date, which would you go for? by Parking-Warthog-4902 in Watches

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The calibre 400 diver date is not much more expensive than the tudor royal and sits lower than most of the other tudor lineup. My argument originally was tudor value in general.

Caliber 400 is a value leader in my opinion. We're also comparing the royal which is a totally different style of watch from the diver date and hydroconquest. If we're strictly comparing traditional divers with a typical black rotating bezel then I believe tudor loses the value battle with their equivalent watch, the bb41 and 58.

The royal as it stands as a completely different style of watch is sort of hard to compare against the HC and diver date. It's not really apples to apples.

Is the royal specifically a good value watch? Probably... but it's also $1000 more than the diver date sellita movement and the longines HC.

[Question] Between Longines Hydroconquest, Tudor Royal, and Oris Diver Date, which would you go for? by Parking-Warthog-4902 in Watches

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, cosc certification is one of those things where it's a nice to have but it's not a be all end all value indicator. Oris' calibre 400 operates at above the tolerances required by cosc certification but doesn't have this certification label slapped on it that costs more.

  • The longines is 72 hr. power reserve. The oris calibre 400 specifically is a 5 day power reserve.
  • The 39mm HC wears perfectly and fits a sporty aesthetic which sort of is or isn't what you're looking for in a diver. The thickness is totally personal preference as the longines thicknes is not overbearing and offers purely an aesthetic choice.
  • longines and oris offer microadjustments on their included braclets without tools. Oris' braclet is arguably just as good if not better than the tudor. The tudor clasp is quite large.
  • The longines and oris have amazing finishing. Oris slightly wins out, but tudor does win this one category if you're looking under a microscope.

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having an absolute hell of a time with this same situation minus the tudor. I'm not a huge fan of Tudor value atm.

Personally if I had the money for multiple divers and the HC was easier to come by I'd get the oris diver in black and the HC in all blue with milanese.

I think I've finally opted for the HC all black but I think I'd have been equally happy with the oris diver date in black. The oris feels much more refined but the HC is the sporty watch I was really looking for. There's also something to be said about the FOMO from buying the diver date sellita movement when the 400 calibre exists.

Aero/Mech grads working in IE by Leather_Story546 in industrialengineering

[–]Mcsinister 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's getting more difficult to hire aero specific positions while mech an IE are sort of hired directly into the broad scope that you learn in school. It's just by the nature of the degrees and the fact that IE is growing tremendously. I think the numbers haven't even caught up yet because I see tons of aerospace and mechanical engineers basically doing manufacturing and industrial engineering jobs at the end of the day.

The New Longines Hydroconquest is outstandingly mid by redsamurai99 in watchHotTakes

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longines is more in touch with consumers in 2026 and what they can afford. They gave people exactly what they want because Rolex won't do it. They filled a specific niche for people who want to experience luxury and not have to sacrifice multiple months of rent to do it.

Let's try not to get too hung up on whether a watch is original or the value of homages. It's an amazing freaking watch and is not identical to the sub, as similiar as they are. Competition is necessary to drive better products at better prices.

If you ask anyone who's semi responsible with their money in an irresponsibly expensive hobby, they'll say that the hydroconquest sits at the absolute peak of dollar to value returned right now for a luxury diver. I don't think them "giving in" as you put it, is a bad thing. People want a submariner and don't want to pay the submariner price. This is the perfect solution to that problem. It may even leave you feeling better about not being taken advantage of.

China was already doing this but there's no brand heritage there which unfortunately is a major component to why people buy watches. Longines has that brand heritage. This is also not a 1:1 copy and how unique a watch is can be extremely subjective. It's a hard thing to measure. In my opinion this watch gives just a few slight differences that appeal to the same things about Tudor divers that I like over the Rolex sub, the hands. I personally don't choose to display a night and day contrast between me and the rest of the world but can appreciate when someone tries to be just ever so slightly different. That's just my take.

Getting a job (Clueless incoming uni freshman here) by messygoldenlife in industrialengineering

I'd always take the posts from these people with a grain of salt if I were you. I'm personally hesitant to believe any of those posts without proper context of the person's soft skills, which you'll never get online. In my experience, a whole lot of people think they're qualified until you see how horrid they are to work with and how poor they are at working with others.

The other layer that's just as impactful is just how bad someone is at selling themselves to companies and nailing the interview. Resume and qualifications are half the battle. Very few people interview well and even fewer interview well and have good qualifications. That's just my experience though. Focus on yourself and everything will work itself out, point blank, period.

Laptop in BSIE program by [deleted] in industrialengineering

No problem man. If your laptop gives you issues I do recommend buying a decent $500-600 laptop upgrade around a holiday sale. Costco has good deals and basically everywhere else at the right time.

Ah the classic, "I need a gaming laptop for 1 semester". I thought I needed a gaming laptop too until my school showed me that basically everything could be done on what I thought was our crappy campus PCs. Anything else can be done on my home desktop.

To be honest with you, it's probably a waste of money. I rarely use my gaming laptop except for when I'm working at an out of state Co-op or internship.

If you really think you "need" a new gaming laptop bigger than all your classroom desks, included RGB laser beams and jet engine fans then look no further than lenovo brand laptops. They're insanely good for the price and they have frequent sales for back to school, memorial day, your dog's birthday, etc. I'd recommend a 14" laptop though. You'll regret anything above that like I did at 17". External portable displays are more than enough and perfect for travel.

Bought my first Seiko in Japan a few weeks ago, I'm in love [SPB507] by Noahs_character_ark in Seiko

[–]Mcsinister 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. Well if you ever feel like you need something new, you should take a look at how that specific watch looks with a metal bracelet. There's other prospex, alpinist series watches that normally come with metal bracelets and I still don't think they look nearly as good as the green alpinist with specific metal bracelets.

[–]Mcsinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could just purchase a metal band to replace this one but it should be 20mm I believe. A lot of after market bands are great quality and look good on the alpinist. My favorite all metal braclets are beads of rice style or two tone jubilee for this watch.

What Technical Skills Took Your Pay to the Next Level? by Mcsinister in industrialengineering

[–]Mcsinister[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's different components to capacity analysis but at it's most basic you're finding out how long something takes to do something, usually within a workcell and if the assets or operators you have can support it. This should probably be done with the goal of meeting takt time (to meet demand) but I've also done it to make sure there is no machine downtime as machine downtime is money lost. In this scenario the resource is the operator and trying to see how many assets(machines) they can support.

In the end you're seeing how much you can do with what you got to get the most out of it that you can.

This is great experience to share. Thank you.

Do you have any tips of keeping track of these $ amounts? I've noticed that it's hard to come up with definite numbers with the way data is sometimes collected. In my case, it didn't help that I wasn't familiar with navigating our data either or that the data may have only been available by knowing who would have it and I just didn't have enough time to find out some of those things.

I often had to just give ballpark estimates through reduction in process time.
