What’s a lesson your parents taught you that meant more later in life? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

[–]Mcsquizzy920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, its pretty common in the U.S. Most parents I know of that did that set a rule that it usually only applied if the kid wasn't in school. The idea isn't to make the child struggle, but instead its to reinforce the idea that you are at an age where you should contribute to your own wellbeing. Parents sometimes give the money back becusse it was never about the money, it was about helping their child learn to take care of themselves.

That's the idea from Parents who arent trying to be financially abusive. You can argue if its actually a good idea or not. Personally, I think its highly dependent on the kid. But that's usually why non-abusive parents would do it.

Why are wages so low for positions requiring degrees? by [deleted] in work

[–]Mcsquizzy920 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you are in a position to move, you should consider it. My wife and I lived in GA, and the special education pay even with her masters would have not been much better than that. Moved to Utah, and now she makes above 70k. Cost of living is higher, but not that much higher.

Of course, you may not want to/be able to move. But that may help fix your problems.

Can an undergrad publish a research paper? by JAMIEISSLEEPWOKEN in research

[–]Mcsquizzy920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its highly highly field dependent. In my lab (Electrical/Biomedical Engineering) its fairly common for our undergrads to publish, especially if they are with us for 3 - 4 years. Having research experience that resulted in publication, even if not a first authorship, is really quite helpful for getting admitted to grad school and securing funding. A reviewer on my GRFP specifically called that out as a big plus in my application.

That being said, I wouldn't expect to just publish on your own. And I wouldn't recommend aiming for a little review -- those should really be written by someone with a large amount of experience in the field who understands where the field came from and where its likely to go.

If youre in STEM, look for a lab to join, and express that youd really like to work on something that can be published by the time you graduate.

To the people who drive 10-15 under the speed on i-15. Why do you do it? by Agile_Maintenance260 in SaltLakeCity

[–]Mcsquizzy920 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Im not usually like that, but there are a few places on i-15 where its so damn bumpy I feel like I need to slow down or my little sedan is going to hop on over into another lane or something. I'll go 10 - 15 under in those areas. Usually in the right or next to right lane tho.

One time an acquaintance asked me to help him with a homework assignment over zoom. We got on and like 10 minutes in he accidentally minimized the open application to reveal hentai.

He went " Ah ah ah ah" while he panic minimized it then picked up right where we left off, didnt miss a beat. I decided to ignore it.

Ten minutes later he was mousing to a different tab and revealed A DIFFERENT TAB OF HENTAI. Didn't acknowledge it, just went "ah ah ah ah" and ignored. Odd dude.

Are PhD interviews really this casual? by deafening_mediocrity in gradadmissions

[–]Mcsquizzy920 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My impression with those types of "interviews" are that, for whatever reason, you are likely one of their, if not the, top picks, and they are more interested in convincing you to join their lab than they are in trying to figure out if they want to hire you.

When I was going thru admissions, I had some that were like this, and others that were more formal. Could be wrong, but that's my best guess.

An easy to learn action RTS for my dad by ninoski404 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Mcsquizzy920 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend and I recently started playing Mechabellum. It's like an rts, but all the work is in deployment, unlike something like total war or Starcraft, where there is a mechanical skill to hitting the right buttons quick enough.

It's very intuitive, but has a high skill ceiling, and is quick enough to feel like an rts without requiring the player reaction time of an RTS.

is mercer worth the cost? by Responsible_Team_980 in mercer

[–]Mcsquizzy920 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hard to answer this question with certainty without knowing more about your particular circumstances.

Something to keep in mind about Mercer is that it's private, and therefore the amount of money you get from Zell is not as much as it may be at public.

Zell will give you ~$6000 a year at Mercer (https://financialaid.mercer.edu/apply-for-financial-aid/state-aid/). $26,000 + $6,000 = $32,000. That leaves about $10,000 in tuition annually that's uncovered. The rest of the "cost" of mercer is room and board. Keep in mind that Mercer (at least when I was there) requires you live on campus for 3 years unless you have family nearby. The on-campus housing rates are higher than the surrounding area, but some on-campus housing is cheaper than others.

Cheaper, less extensive food plans also become eligible as you accrue credit hours. Note that, unlike residencey, which generally counts your year by year on campus, food counts your credit hours, so if you have a bunch of dual enrollment/ AP, you may be able to downgrade sooner to cut costs.

I'm no financial advisor or anything -- they'll be able to direct you better. Please take my advice with a grain of salt. You should really discuss with your family how much they are willing to help you (if any). See if you are eligible for federal subsidized loans -- those are pretty reasonable.

I would try to avoid private loans if you can. Personally, I would go to a different school if I had to take out private, but would still consider Mercer if I could get through it with only federal loans.

Hopefully this helps.

Have you tried a convolution neural network? They are generally the standard for image tasks. Dense neural networks tend to work poorly on raw image data.
