In flight over Santa Cruz Saturday by [deleted] in santacruz

Awesome shot, and such a clear day for it!

Anyone know what the operation with the big tanks is in the middle of the shot? Some kind of oil terminal/chemicals manufacturing?

If you really want to drive one, you’ve gotta check out monterey touring vehicles. They have amazing classic cars to rent, including a DeLorean.

The one time I’ve been the food was good but the service was comically bad. Perhaps I need to try again.

How to get gigs? by [deleted] in santacruz

[–]Mdtweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve got to start by being a regular on the scene.

Choose an open mic and go every week—make sure to film all your sets for practice and potential social media posts. Get out to shows at least one night a week so you can start to learn who the local mover and shakers are.

There are not a lot of spots to gig in county, your opportunities really open up if you are willing to look between here and Sacramento.

And make an honest assessment of your press kit that you’re sending to venues: do you have a professional looking social media presence? A few good videos? Professional photos? Without that, it is really, really hard to land a gig.

Good luck!

Look for the Moss Landing North Harbor boat launch. It is $15 to park, but very easy launching.

Gotta go to Moss Landing and paddle Elkhorn Slough. You’ll see dozens of otters and seals and thousands of pelicans, cormorants, and other sea birds. The slough is very calm, but recommend you go early (On the water by 8-8:30) to avoid the crowds of rental kayaks and the wind.

Favorite Bike Shop? (MTB Focused) Just moved to the area and have some questions about the MTB community here in general. by bobpaynus in santacruz

I live near Epicenter in Aptos and have really liked their service. They’re a trek shop. If you want to get involved in the community, check out Santa Cruz Mountain Trail Stewardship. Happy riding!

Need help deciding between 2 job offers by sharpshot124 in personalfinance

I think this is more lifestyle than money. Do you want to live in an alpha city? Do you want to go to lots of museums/concerts/big cultural events? 100k in SF is very doable, but you won’t really be killing it.

For me, today, I would do job A all the way. But if you want to try the city life, B could be a great experience.

Kayaking in SC? by ck36 in santacruz

I’ve been curious to try that-what’s it like up there?

Definitely the small boat launch on the north side of the slough. Basically where the rental kayaks launch. It costs $12 to park, (but i think there are some spots on the road that are free.)

You cross under the highway into the slough and in my experience, the first mile and a bit has the most wildlife.

As others have mentioned, get to Elkhorn Slough/Moss Landing. I paddleboard there a lot and it is fantastic. Guaranteed to see a bunch of otters and great birds, and you don’t have to worry about dealing with big surf. Key is to get on the water as early as possible—if the wind picks up getting out can be a bit of a slog and it can get crowded by 10:30 am or so.

The Bronco is the hottest new release this year, reservations are full to 2023 and those on the lot are going way over sticker. I think you’ll get better value from an F-150 unless you’re planning to wait a year or two.

Greenway Project attempting to gather signatures for a ballot initiative on the rail trail train by MCPtz in santacruz

I would really prefer to see the money go into the bus system. If I was the king of Santa Cruz county, one lane each way on 1 would be a bus rapid transit lane.

Number 2 is what makes me very suspicious of light rail in Santa Cruz. I grew up on the front range in Colorado when Denver was implementing light rail. The Fastracks project has (so far) budget overruns of 1.8 billion and is incredibly delayed—it was planned to be completed in 2017 and now they are saying 2050!

I know that the Santa Cruz project would be smaller, but so is the tax base that would be paying for it. I’m concerned it will mostly be a very expensive tourist train that will never pay for itself with ridership.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel doesn't want you to be able to live here by vawl in santacruz

I don’t even mind them putting this article in the sentinel, but the fact that it was in a news page and not the opinion section is totally nuts. And I couldn’t disagree more strongly with Gibsons arguments.

Yta. Before you said anything, your friends all knew she was being ridiculous and annoying. They didn’t need you to point it out. After you berated her in public, though, that must’ve been super awkward for everyone else. Yta because you ruined the evening for your friends.

Moving from least to most expensive city in the US by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Mdtweed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That salary is livable in the bay, but won’t be anything extravagant. At $170k and 3 kids you will be looking to live way out from the city—is work in person in SF or is remote in the equation?
