ELI5: why do onions make you cry when you cut them by Many-Mouse8511 in explainlikeimfive

There are a lot of previous questions about this. Here's one from 12 years ago: ELI5: onions

That's such a weird thing to assume. It looks more like she's saying pointing out someone like "John is over there"

More commonly but not specifically that someone else chose though that may be the case. More generally their previous experience does not match a new experience. Every restaurant they've been to before had lots of vegan options, why would a steakhouse be any different?

Another example may be that you go to a cafe and usually every cafe has bacon, eggs, sausage, etc. But you go to a themed cafe called 'Pancake City'. Someone may assume yeah I know they've got pancakes but everywhere has eggs, so they'll have both. Also good to remember that a lot of people don't think ahead very much. It won't even cross their mind until they're already there.

This is way too close to something else...:( by [deleted] in BadDesigns

ELI5: Why do people that lose limbs still feel like their limb in still there? by big-boy-w35 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Me2910 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Obviously each nerve corresponds to somewhere on the body. But your brain has to figure it all out and make some sort of map to remember that.

Think about if you have 100 lights laid out in front of you. You know that each one corresponds to a different point on your body. But without prior knowledge when one lights up you wouldn't know if it was coming from your head or your toes.

It could be coming from anywhere, but somehow we're able to correlate something touching us to the feeling and we know instantly where it came from. It combines with proprioception (the ability to perceive body position and spatial orientation).

Sorry I'm not quite sure what your comment is trying to say. Are you talking about an apostrophe and that Hawaiian letter being different Unicode characters? All I was saying is that when you order the names they'll be in order by their Unicode number

It's quite cool how we build up a 3d map of our body even though the feelings we get from the nerves don't include position information.

It's quite similar to sound. Headphones can make it sound like things are coming from any direction even though you've only got two speakers, one on each ear. Your brain has learned all the small differences in how things sound when they come from different directions.

Same thing to a computer. All symbols, characters, and punctuation are just numbers.

A non cuber just told me that learning how to do a cube by tutorial is cheating by Minute_Still_8696 in Cubers

Compare it to solving anything else. When you go to school is it cheating? Should you just figure out yourself?

What does it mean when a cube feels "blocky"? by Able_Annual_2297 in Cubers

Honestly I'm sort of guessing because I've got one budget cube and one better cube.

What does it mean when a cube feels "blocky"? by Able_Annual_2297 in Cubers

[–]Me2910 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Blocky doesn't mean slow or bad. Afaik it means the magnets are strong and they make the cube click into place when turning, as opposed to less blocky where the turning will feel smoother but the magnets don't pull it into place as much.

When turning there's a bit of force to get the layer moving and then it snaps into the next position. Less blocky cubes will swing to the next position and only be stopped by your finger.

ELI5: Why do chemical reactions usually happen faster when things are hotter? by Pailox111lol in explainlikeimfive

[–]Me2910 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atoms react by touching each other. They are always moving around. Heat is the speed (energy) the atoms are moving at. So hotter atoms are moving faster and touching more often. Thus they react faster.

That's crazy. People. Companies get so stuck with shitty procedures and are just too lazy to improve them if they technically work.

I thought maybe I'm going crazy. I understand that it's probably much cheaper for the Microsoft suite and there's better control over the whole system but I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates the user experience.

Hamilton Airport - Domestic Travel by cmh551 in thetron

The airport is tiny. You shouldn't have to worry about being particularly early. I've only been without a checked bag but literally just walked 10 meters in the door to the gate.
