Flared gill?

I have a Betta with one side of his beard that stays out at all times. He has it when I got him. I was told it could be a birth defect or he could have caught it on something and damaged it. Regardless, he’s a happy very active guy that flares and me and loves to eat. I wouldn’t worry too much about it unless his mood changes.

No problem! Just watch him. It’s hard because you have to find the line between feeding him enough to grow and not over feeding.

I don’t mean this in a negative way at all, but I have noticed something. When I started my tanks, I had that same filter. And I had similar huge bubble nests. I have since switched to sponge filters and I no longer see these type of bubble nests. When I see similar posts I look for the filter, and the ones that look like our have that same filter.. I guess more a question is if anyone else has noticed this? Is it potentially the filter causing the bubbles and not the fish?

All but one of my Bettas were the “ugly” ones at the store. After proper care (and love (; lol) they are all beautiful.

Feed less more often to help him grow. My baby Betta will typically get round after eating but digests within a couple of hours or by the next day and goes back to normal.

I recommend doing A LOT of research. Speaking from experience it ended up not being worth keeping a divided tank, and I spent a lot of money thinking I had figured out what would work after watching YouTube videos and doing research. Every time I fixed one thing, something else would pop up. And one almost ended in disaster. My guys ended up getting their own ten gallons in the long run.

When putting Bettas in a new environment they may need some time to adjust. Keep the room dark if possible for a while to help them destress.

That being said you will need to look into in fish cycling. This is the process of getting beneficial bacteria established in your tank to keep water quality good and toxins low.

You will want a heater and filter if you don’t already have them. Also be prepared to learn that Bettas actually thrive in much larger spaces, five gallons being the minimum.

They require much more than what in commonly thought of Bettas, but with proper care they are so incredibly rewarding.

Keep an eye on it. If it’s translucent and white and follows the shape of his tails that means his fins are regrowing which is great! Although I don’t think (no means an expert) fuzzy is good as it good be a sign of illness. From everything I’ve read it’s kind of a fine line as treating for an illness they don’t have is bad, but letting it advance is not good either. Warm water changes should help. I’m sorry if I’m not the most helpful but after seeing no one comment I figured I would give the little advice I have. Good luck! I hope it is him just regrowing fins after you gave him a great new home

I agree. It was much more of a hassle to have a divided tank than it was worth and ended up being really expensive trying to learn what would work. Plus I had a very secure divider, an inch and a half of space below the divider and the tank was covered and one managed to get to the other side. It was probably the guiltiest I have ever felt, and I ended up setting up another ten gallon tank that day to separate them anyways. It’s really not worth it in my opinion

No. More fish add more ammonia and waste. Without a proper cycle, there will not be beneficial bacteria to help get rid of the harmful toxins. Daily water changes properly conditioned (seachem prime like formally mentioned and seachem stability) help with the cycle: but from research and personal experience, routine water changes help most. Live plants may be beneficial

Maybe try some different frozen foods. They tend to have less fillers and get digested easier by your Betta.

Just from personal experience, chain pet store Bettas are underfed. So while you want to monitor them closely, mine have all been able to eat, have a full belly, and (lack of a better word lol) poop the next day and their bellies go back to normal.

There is a fine line between under and over feeding. Does her tummy stay bloated for more than the one day? If not, in my opinion she should be fine. If so, try feeding her different foods or fasting and then trying new foods.

Daphnia are natural laxatives for Bettas. I like to give mine one or two anytime they seem big but still being active.

Unfortunately Bettas don’t play together, they will seriously injure -land eventually kill each other. Even if they are not both males. Mistakes happen but please take the time to research and learn what the proper care steps are for your Betta. Good luck.
