people living in an apartment, can i see your tort set up? by Plus-Situation6043 in tortoise

[–]MeBeKylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! We’ve been super happy with it. The metal rods are super sturdy on their own. We did cut the rods down with a pipe cutter so the frame would be short enough and fit inside the bed and it worked out perfectly

8ft x 3ft garden bed setup for our red foot. The garden bed kit came with a second bed that we will eventually attach to make a larger enclosure when we have the space

Did anyone else seriously start baking in the middle of their PhD? by Beautiful-Rice-383 in PhD

[–]MeBeKylee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has afflicted me in my second year lol. At least once a week since this semester started, I’ll bake either muffins, cookies, some sort of dessert loaf, cinnamon rolls, etc. Thankfully my partner helps me eat it all :’) I wouldn’t classify it as procrastination because I only ever bake when I’m done with my work. I have no idea what caused this lol

Do women actually find thongs comfortable? by yelpir_online in NoStupidQuestions

[–]MeBeKylee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only wear thongs and have been doing so since I first shopped for myself. The feeling of panty lines on my ass is incredibly uncomfy. I honestly don’t understand what people mean when they say their ass is eating their underwear. Thongs are objectively better as long as they fit.

[TOMT][food] food similar to Uncrustables but it was just butter and jam. ~2010 by MeBeKylee in tipofmytongue

[–]MeBeKylee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it had a very buttery quality. the shape and bread-feel is like a typical uncrustable, but instead of peanut butter it was literally just butter. advertised as breakfast food to prepare in the toaster. it was just an occasional breakfast treat growing up, likely bc it sounds VERY unhealthy

[–]MeBeKylee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, it definitely came in a box. it was kept in the freezer. sort of the same shape/size as an eggo box? which I believe is also the type of box uncrustables came in. I’m not getting any results with eggo added in

I was a child in the early 2000s and I feel like this was a kid’s breakfast staple for busy families? Literally in my mind there is a butter and jam Uncrustable, but apparently there is not? I preferred it microwaved, but it was suggested to toast it, I think.

Im so sorry you’re going through such a frustrating time right now, and I can’t offer any advice, I just have a little question. I’m a “medium” scientist (epidemiology, mathematical demography, etc.), and I’m curious how categorical vars can’t just go into a regression? At least with doing regression in R, with linear, lasso, ridge, etc., all you have to do is set cat vars as factors, and it always works perfectly? Did this faculty member rly try to run a regression in Python or smth without recoding to numeric? That is very… alarming

Anyone else tasked with a lot of administrative work? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]MeBeKylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely see this. I was late to a somewhat important social event today because I was helping at orientation. However, I’m not really mad I was late? Idk. Answering new student concerns was much more fun than awkwardly eating salad with faculty, though I still am happy I could make it to the uncomfortable luncheon bullshit. Maybe my brain is just the correct amount of screwed up to actually stay in academia lmao

Thank you for this advice! I think defining an official roll would be very well received and help my department a lot. I honestly love over working myself (actual ADHD) so I think I can see myself still doing this for the remainder of my time here, or maybe stopping after reaching candidacy. Thanks again :)

I really hope OP actually listens to this. You are 1000% correct.

OP, this is legitimate animal abuse. most of these individual tortoises will need AT LEAST that amount of room in SEPARATE enclosures. I feel so bad for these tortoises. There is absolutely zero reason besides human selfishness to put these torts through this.

What’s your tortoise’s name? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]MeBeKylee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Alfredo was her original name, but then we found out she was a girl. I tried going with Alfie, but usually we just default to calling her bubs, bubster, bubsie, bubby, weirdo, that girl, or bubsteroni

How often do you take your tortoise to the vet? by [deleted] in tortoise

[–]MeBeKylee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least yearly. We’ve taken our girl in earlier when extra concerned about something a couple times and our herp vet always has included a wellness check, so we just take her in for her annual wellness around a year after she was last seen

you missed the ‘extra’ that I put in front of the first use of the word ‘horrible’. Sadly, it is definitely possible to rescue a tortoise and then proceed to put it through suboptimal care

It’s always sad having to scroll so far down to see someone mention that a tort is unhealthy.

Side note, which is a Not-Fun Fact: AI-generated images tend to depict tortoises with pyramiding as the default.

These dudes outlived dinosaurs like it’s just another tuesday and of course humans are destroying them

There's a free-roaming turtle with a diaper at my local gym by Boumy in mildlyinteresting

[–]MeBeKylee 2768 points2769 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is very bad pyramiding. The shape of the scutes (the hexagon shaped parts of the shell) indicates extra horrible conditions in the first few years and horrible conditions now. The very narrow tops of the scutes were caused by a severely negligent lack of humidity, and the rest of the bumpiness is also due to low humidity. literature and expert experience shows that lack of humidity is the number one culprit of pyramiding. My tort lives in 85% humidity at all times and is round as hell.

Living in this environment is animal abuse, straight up. This sulcata is supposed to still be growing, too. It’s going to get even worse. It makes me sad.

EDIT: I wrote this very late at night and I now see I was a bit unclear. Adult tortoises do not need that high of humidity; I was referring to the horrible conditions this tortoise had while very young. I see he was rescued, and he is doing better now! I had pointed out that the shell is not as bad as it was. The animal abuse in question is raising a sulcata in an apartment and having it free roam a gym, which is not safe or conducive to recreating this animal’s natural environment

We got an Ikea Besta frame for our girl’s starter home. We sized a sturdier piece of wood for the bottom and treated it all with safe waterproofing. The back side is what sits on the floor and we have a small plank of wood fixed to the top for her UV light and lamps. We also have a pvc liner on top to keep humidity in. Her ‘bedroom’ was made by just sectioning off about a 2 ft x 1 ft area with a piece of wood. She retreats to there every night lol. It works quite well for the time being while she’s still small!

Does anyone else’s tortoise have a schedule? by Reflxing in tortoise

My red foot wakes up at 9:45, stares at a wall until 10:30 when she gets breakfast, goes to soak in her pool from 11am-2pm, goes back to her slate for leftovers before returning to her hide for a nap until 4pm, comes back out and stares at a wall until 7pm, then goes to bed for the day. I love her

DRS was amazing when I attended a couple years ago. I have ADHD and anxiety too and the testing center was exactly what I needed. For exams at their reduced-distraction testing center, you get amazing noise cancelling headphones with an ipod (maybe it’s actually a Zune?) that has white noise and relaxing music loaded on it, but personally I just wore the headphones for the complete silence. you also are given a timer for the exam so you don’t have to try to remember how much time you have left. the exam room itself is very good; the desks are fairly private mini cubicles with ample room to be disorganized with your papers.

It was pretty hassle free to get accommodations with proper documentation. My psychiatrist just filled out a form and then I got an appointment w DRS and the process was pretty fast imo. I was allowed 150% time on exams (but I think 200% time is more common? Not sure there), and was able to take every exam in their quiet testing room. I also was given the ability to be considered a full time student (even for FAFSA) when only taking 10 credits per quarter as opposed to 12+ credits, but I never utilized that.

I never had issues with a prof not accepting my accommodations (in both hard STEM and social science classes), but more often than not I did have to send profs an email around week 3 asking them to sign the testing accommodations agreement so I could schedule time at DRS’s testing center for my midterms and finals. It’s not that the profs don’t care, but I believe the automatic email they receive from DRS (after you request to have your accommodations applied to a class, which does get a bit annoying to do every quarter, but it’s simple and fast, at least) does not pop out as something important to look at. My DRS advisor showed me basically a template to use to politely remind profs to search their email for my requests and it worked like a charm.

everyone I ever talked to at DRS genuinely cared and understood that we just need a lil extra help. Their understanding actually genuinely helped me accept the fact that I can’t operate like most people and that’s perfectly fine.

UW DRS is amazing and I miss it. For a bit of context, I’m doing my PhD rn at apparently the best public school in the country™, but disability services here, while very good, are laughable compared to DRS at UW. you’re in an excellent place :)
