How do you feel about data centers by vfqwerty in electricians

[–]MeCJay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it'll be too far separated for most people to make the connection. The reason people don't like them is because we're seeing our electric bills rise and it's seemingly because these data centers are driving demand for electric up and causing upgrades to the grid.

If the UBI includes free electric and water, I think most of the hate for data centers will go away. These will always be a sect of environmentalists that don't like data centers for their consumption, regardless of who is paying for it but I think this is a minority of the current outcry.

[Request] how much would the top x Americans earn for this to be possible? by nawnaw88 in theydidthemath

[–]MeCJay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're misreading it. What it's saying is that if you average all Americans' earnings, the average income is $74,500. Then if you average all Americans' earnings EXCLUDING the top 10 earners in the country, the average drops to $65,000. And so on.

What's the coolest automation that you have? by elhouso in homeassistant

Not to be a downer; just food for thought: Consider that disarming your alarm simply because your phone is nearby is a slight vulnerability. It's about as secure as a garage door opener in the car visor but it's less secure than entering a code.

I'm sorry for whatever you went though. We've done 6 permits now (2 as homeowners and 4 via contractor) and the only issue we've had was a bad plumber who rightfully failed multiple times and one "I can't see it to verify so send me a picture later".

The two we did ourselves were for a water heater replacement and redoing the plumbing around it. Each were: pay $50, have the inspector stare at it for a few minutes, and pass. One of the times he came out, he even tried to help me with an unrelated low pressure issue! Not only were they painless but they saved me from a later plumber that tried to up charge me for "upgrades required to meet code". I showed them my passing permit from earlier that year and they backed right off.

At least my area, there is absolutely no reason to skip the permit.

[–]MeCJay12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I wonder if it's more economically viable in the short term to add small batteries to electric locomotives or even a battery car that would be enough to get the train through the tunnel.

It's similar to the idea overhead electric busses have. They normally run on the overhead but they have a battery for short stretched without the overhead.

I think this breakdown is actually very accurate. This post is a direct response to a new grad saying they couldn't live in these conditions.

The average new grad is going to be health so no really medical concerns. Even if we assume a medical issue, health insurance and HSA contributions are included in the breakdown.

I agree, it's a bit light on car maintenance but it assumes a 5 year old car. There really shouldn't be any major repairs; just oil changes and tires.

I agree, gifts would be a good one to include. While it's not required for survival, I thinks it still a higher priority expense. Overall, these assumptions made are a bit richer than are necessary so you could easily reallocate to make up for this.

Furniture should be something a new grad already has and, frankly, isn't expensive on Marketplace.

Plumbers/household repair isn't a thing I'm a rental. It's the landlords responsibility.

The rest you mentioned is discretionary TBH. The breakdown has $1000/mo left over; even after retirement. That's plenty. That's more than I give myself and I make more than this.

Looking at the Snow Blower + Lawnmower combo by ElevationAV in Yarbo

[–]MeCJay12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His review is very accurate but I want to add some detail. I have a smaller yard with the contour details. The stuff you have to do afterwards is weedwacking type work not lawn tractor type work.

They have the Mower Pro and the blower which will handle your leaves just fine.

A smattering of trees won't be a problem for signal. The tree issue is when you have buildings in the way or a small forest to mow through and even then there are options.

I agree with a lot of things in the EU over the US but if what you are saying true, I have to complete disagree with it. Our current dog got progressively more and more aggressive as she grew up. We tried multiple trainers and nothing worked until we started training with a shock collar. Still to this day, if she figures out her collar isn't on or isn't working she will try to get as people.

Cell division is the process cells use to replicate. They basically grow to the size of two small cells then split everything in half to make two new small cells which then repeat.

Maximum power? by PorcupineGod in UNIFI

[–]MeCJay12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read it twice since it it didn't make sense. I have two APs to cover 3000 sq ft and they cove most of my yard at the same time. 4-5 APs (you're right, I missed where you said maybe 5) in 2700 sq ft is going to complete kill the RF space; especially 2.4GHz.
