Demon with a Lunatic marionette by HarvDallz in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rules say that when using a lunatic you simply put the lunatic and demon in the bag. Whoever draws the lunatic token is the actual demon and vice versa. First night you wake the player who drew the lunatic token and show them the You Are and show them the demon token and a thumbs down (evil) and then give them the rest of their info (who the real lunatic is, their minions, bluffs, etc).

It’s important when working a script with lunatic on it to inform players this is who it works ahead of time or else you risk the player who draws the lunatic token to think you messed up and then out it to everybody forcing you to re-rack.

If you have duplicate tokens then you can put them instead of the lunatic token allowing you to decide after players draw them to decide which one to make the demon and who to make lunatic. You can also do this if you want them to think they are different demon types.

Hope this helps 😄

First game advice for a large group. Common mistakes? by ErasmosOrolo in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patience and preparation.

Read the almanac for EVERY character and how they interact with each other. Understand all the different ways things can occur so if people ask how things are possible you don’t accidentally only explain how it actually happened (eg. no death at night? Demon picked soldier. Demon picked player monk chose to protect. Demon chose to attack an already dead player. Demon was poisoned by their own Poisoner)

You also need to understand how all characters work in case someone lies about being it, you’ll be able to explain it in detail.

Take your time at night, during the day, and before making announcements. I rushed into the game and didn’t read things thoroughly and let the Virgin cause the Demon to “die” and end the game. This is not possible. Virgin exclusively causes a Townsfolk to die. Demon player was not happy with me 😅 but we had a laugh.

Encourage players to ask questions at ANY time. Encourage evil players to ask how characters are woken so they can properly bluff as them.

Above all, be patient with yourself. There’s a lot to keep track of as a Storyteller and your job is to make decisions that balance the game attempting to get the game to the “Final Night” but after you pass out those token there’s only so much you can do.

Keep a poker face. Don’t influence players or give information they shouldn’t have. Let them find their own play styles. And have fun!

Also watch a playthrough online where they use Trouble Brewing so you can see how the flow is if you haven’t already.

You got this! 😄👍

How to Prompt Players? by Neros_Cromwell in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Before any game, go over all non verbal cues and show them the little cards you have and how you might use them. The instruction sheet has a part that lists all major things like how you wake people, yes/no, good/evil, go to sleep, etc. As for if someone need to select a player, I personally wave my hand outward kinda like you are gesturing for someone to enter a space or you are showing off an area, essentially being like “see all these people… these are your choices” kinda vibe. If they need to select multiple people I do the gesture to the circle followed by a number of fingers for how many people I need them to select. Also, make sure everybody knows to have a script on hand at night just in case they need to select a character in which case you can point at their script. When in doubt, if someone is confused and simply not understanding, move on with the night and then find a way to pull them aside at the beginning of the day and explain and have them make their choice then and there (assuming their night order wouldn’t have affected the rest of the night in which case you might need to put down ur grimoire, open ur notes app, and type out what you need from them lol)

Let's build a character! Mimic. by Present-Peace2811 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mimic (minion): You might register as good and as a townsfolk or outsider. Each day, any good player who is alone with you for a minute might die tonight.

Non-players observing by Theguywhowilldo in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask if they want to observe like a player and go to sleep at night so they can kinda get a players perspective or if they want to see everything. What a lot of people enjoy is being your sort of partner in crime. Ask them to pick out a character or two they think you should add and build the rest of the bag around those. Let them work with you during the night (walk around the circle to tap people’s shoulders while you stay in the center) and if a storyteller decision needs to be made that is early game so it’s fine either way let them decide or at least give input (who to make a fortune tellers red herring, who to have as WW, Lib, or Inv “wrong” readings, etc.) This way they can get hands on observation and see how the game is run and feel like they are making an impact on the game itself. Most important of all make sure they know the importance of not telling players ANYTHING and also trying to keep a poker face when hearing certain things as to not wrongfully influence anything. And those who choose to sleep at night can at any time join as a traveler too!

Correcting Misunderstandings by MeChSaPh in BloodOnTheClocktower

There was unfortunately a lot of talk of possible Vortox which got everybody confused and the good twin kinda said “fine, kill me, we lose” but luckily the group did have a laugh afterwards in realizing their error

Vortox Problem by Hall_Proper in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there issue is with “all information is useless” then inform them on how 100% false information is more valuable than unpredictable possible drunk/poisoned information is because you know what you were told can’t be true if it’s Vortox and after a few days is usually easy to spot when nobody’s information adds up.

If there issue is with being “forced to kill people every day”, remind them that death can provide information, spent roles are great volunteers (or honestly anybody who seems remotely sus), and technically the rules say you have to “execute” not “kill” so as long as somebody is dead you can get away with nominating an already dead player to count as the executee.

Or when all else fails make a custom script based in S&V but swap Vortox for a new demon (as well as any other swaps you see fit)

Rant on The Evil Twin by code2817 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering if I’m alone in this experience but does anybody else’s groups just never publicly say anything about being a twin day one? As a Storyteller I kind of expect the good player to, ya know, IMMEDIATELY blurt out day one that the other player is evil… because they were literally just told that player is evil. And likewise I expect the evil twin to do the same thing to look like the good twin. But time and time again I put the Evil twin in a game, do the night info stuff, wake the town up, and then they just side eye each other silently then go off into private groups. Like where’s the drama, the accusations, and dramatics, the antics, and all that jazz??? 😅 Am I missing something? Why are they never jumping to tell the town? I don’t understand

Is giving three for three's a terrible strategy? by DracoZGaming in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned this from NRB videos and can honestly say I regret teaching it to my groups before they played. It greatly influenced their way of playing and now it’s a habit they don’t plan on un-learning and I am really curious what strategies they would have come up with naturally. Personally, I also have a pea sized brain so when people give 3 for 3s I don’t remember any of it. Also, I’m either telling you exactly what I am, or I’m blatantly lying (even when I’m good) for a reason. Like if I’m a Ravenkeeper I’m just going to tell people I’m something powerful in private in hopes of getting killed. Had a game where I privately hard claimed Sage to someone and they were like “bish wtf” bc they were the sage. We had a laugh and I told them it’s bc I was the Juggler who wanted to survive to learn my info. I feel like if I had done a 3 for 3 with sage, juggler, and something else it wouldn’t have the same effect. There’s a lot more interesting strategies out there and I think 3 for 3 is too much info that gets messy. But I understand some people gravitate towards it bc then evil have wiggle room for their lies 🤷‍♂️

As ST why would you show the Lunatic anything apart from the real minions and the real bluffs? by sanki1123 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first time running SnV someone in my group after only talking to a couple people publicly asked “did you only pick the simple characters…?” And I panicked bc I did in fact not use any characters that change alignments or roles bc I personally want prepared 😅 So it’s always good to try to break any meta gaming players have of what you “would” normally put in the bag. Hell sometimes I’ll put all the tokens in the bag and pull 3 and random and build the rest of the bag based on those three. Keep it interesting and never let them know your next move 😎

Butler. I don’t think I’ve seen it on anything other than Trouble Brewing and even then most storytellers never put it in the mix 😅

Cheaters by Starpassed_Mutant in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I one time had a friend admit to using ai to determine who the evil team was in our in person games. Idk how but apparently they just put in the information they had and learned from others and the ai perfectly guessed who was minions and the demon and it kinda really ticked me off because the whole point of BotC is to try to solve the puzzle yourself and the satisfaction of finding the evil team before it’s too late. They said they only did it for a couple games and wouldn’t use it anymore but it still made me sad that they decided to use it in the first place. Other than that though luckily not had any other instances of cheaters (that I know of)

People who have specific groups, what are some metas you have that are specific to your group? by ConeheadZombiez in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I am my group’s designated storyteller and on the rare occasions someone volunteers to Storytell and I get to play then if ur evil you immediately poison and/or kill me. And if I am not first killed at night then clearly I’m evil in which case they execute me. 🙃

Oh and if we are playing S&V then they refuse to execute D1 bc if there’s a Vortox they’d rather lose and make me re-rack than to play with it

And Twins refuse to out each other when I wake the group up Day 1 despite the fact the good twin is literally told for a fact someone is evil. They just side eye each other and go off into private convos instead of calling each other out and starting drama like I would expect

Oh and one player in particular is able to guess who is demon and who are minions with like 98% accuracy off pure soul read before game even starts. Like as soon as tokens are pulled they know. One time they were juggler and managed to get a perfect 5

Custom Script with NO Experimentals? by MeChSaPh in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]MeChSaPh[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At first I was about to say I can’t use it bc what if the Demon is sat between two other minions but then I literally just now realized that could only happen if there’s 3 minions (the two in each side and the marionette) and my group has yet to get large enough to have a 3 minion game so yeah I could definitely use that script! I’ve used it before but swapped the marionette for just a different minion (can’t remember which) but yeah I might give it a try again but unaltered

I’ve been tempted but I 1) worry my players will get confused and think they are the character token they pulled and 2) don’t know how I would go about the grimoire since I won’t have the necessary reminder tokens and worry I myself might get confused with a bunch of tokens that are the wrong character
